Why is my hair like this?!

Hello!

Since entering my 30s my hair seems to have completely changed texture. Is this normal?

I used to have relatively shiny, smooth hair but now it's frizzy, dry and becomes knotty so easily. It's driving me mad!

My routine hasn't changed... I wash my hair every other day and do a deep conditioning mask every 2 weeks. Rarely use any heat on it either. I do dye my hair using box dye... but I've been doing that since my early 20s - I started going grey very young!

Does anyone have any suggestions on why my hair has become unmanageable? Any amazing products which will send my hair back to its glory days? I'm willing to try anything!!

Can you try washing it less? Mine has got dryer as I have got older.

Maybe the hardness of water has changed?

Or humidity in the house?

Either that or hormonal changes can cause dry scalp followed by dry hair

Actually we did move house (and counties) in August and the water is very hard here!

I would try washing my hair less but the roots still get quite greasy. The frizzy, wispy dry bits are sort of from the mid lengths to the ends. Definitelynworth a trt th

Sorry, not quite sure what happened then!

... definitely worth a try though (washing hair less) as during lockdown is the perfect time to try it!

Might be worth washing less, and using dry shampoo on your roots? Also, I stopped brushing my hair as much. Generally only gets combed through with conditioner on, and it seems to have helped. Changed my brush to a Denman, thinking it would be better for my hair.

Same here! I didn't understand why as I've always had lovely smooth hair and now have the same issues as you and also I've been getting so much breakage/ baby hairs which stand on end too but realised after reading your post it coincides with entering my thirties!

Are you using conditioner every time you wash it?

Mine turned into a horrible tuggy mess a few years back when i used to just use a 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner. When i switched to separate shampoo and separate conditioner it went back to normal!

It sounds like a hard water issue to me. I have the same problem every time I stay with my parents who live in a hard water area, my hair instantly turns into a knotted mess, there are attachments for the shower head that you can buy which will reduce the hardness of the water.

If you're only conditing every couple of weeks, maybe try a 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner in between. Conditioner on its own is too heavy for me. I use the Pantene or Dove ones.

In lockdown as I'm not going out, I'm leaving it an extra day between washes and it looks okay.

It is the hard water, dreadful stuff. Move north.

My hair is better in hard water!
Maybe it’s very grey. Grey hair does tend to be a different texture to the original hair. Although if it’s the older hair that doesn’t make much sense.
I found using shampoo and conditioner without silicone in made a huge change but quite slowly. I had to wait for the damaged hair to grow or be cut out. You need to avoid any products with silicone or dinethicone-if it’s got a “cone” at the end of it I won’t use it.
I love Windle products, they’ve made a massive difference to my hair. I go t usually believe product hype but these have certainly worked for me. It’s irritating that they don’t do samples though as it’s a big investment.I’ve also got products from Phyto which I also love. I think the one I use is Phytodensia but they do different ones.
