How to stop my hair being so greasy

Shefliesonherownwings · 29/04/2020 12:22

I've always had hair that is more greasy than dry but washing it every other day seemed to keep it at bay.

I was pregnant last year and my hair was amazing, lovely and full and never got greasy. However my post partum hair is now incredibly greasy and has been for six month. I'm still washing every other day but now it's greasy after 24 hours instead of 48. Sometimes it feels like it's greasy only a few hours later.

I'm a total novice with style and beauty stuff. Aside from using shampoo and conditioner (not on my roots) I don't do anything to my hair apart from blow drying it but I'm getting so fed up of it looking flat and greasy so quickly.

Any tips for reducing the grease?

there is a step by step guide of how to 'reset' your scalp here. It takes a few weeks but it does help x

Northernsoullover · 29/04/2020 13:22

I've tried 'training' my hair and in my case it does not work. I use dry shampoo but I'm not keen on the powder on my scalp.
I've just ordered some Ting Tang dry shampoo. It claims to wash your hair without water. Like hair mousse. I will update.

CatherineTheNotSoGreat · 29/04/2020 14:17

I feel your pain OP. But I have tried everything and I agree with @Northersoullover nothing makes it change/dry up etc. You can't train your hair and oil glands to be anything but what they are. It's like saying can I get my hair to change colour to black.
Anyway, it's a pain, but just wash it. Dry shampoo when you're fed-up and want a day off.

Shefliesonherownwings · 29/04/2020 17:53

Thanks, I have actually been through not washing it at much and limiting it to 2 times a week but it didn't really help. I really didn't see any change. except extra grease.

I guess i'll just have to hope that the hormones settle back down again at some point. I'll also invest in some decent dry shampoo as well. :(

I use Boots build up remover shampoo or tea tree greasy hair shampoo and wash every morning. Otherwise it's an oil slick

dancemom · 29/04/2020 18:02

L'Oréal clay shampoo and conditioner is great for greasy roots

ChikiTIKI · 29/04/2020 18:13

Have you tried shampoo bars? I can go a day longer than before between washes without it looking greasy when I use one. I use a conditioner bar too.

Uygop · 29/04/2020 18:14

I'm just "training" my hair so that I can wash it every 4 days, not every 2 days. It's worked in the past.

walkingchuckydoll · 29/04/2020 19:30

I just wash it daily.

PersonaNonGarter · 29/04/2020 22:27

Just wash daily. I find if I have less caffeine that helps.

glasshalfsomething · 29/04/2020 22:31

I’ve tried all of the above and the best thing that’s worked for me is Lush Shampoo bar (any) followed by an Apple cider vinegar rinse. It’s still greasy, but significantly reduced and it’s a lot more manageable.

I can’t use clay shampoo; breaks out the skin on my neck.

I've just ordered Mane n Tail clarifying shampoo for my DD who is coming into the teenage years. Her hair is like an oil slick after 2 days. I've heard good things about it and just ordered from Superdrug but not sure how long it's going to take to get here!

SophieGiroux · 29/04/2020 22:46

We tried the Elvive clay but it didn't help, hair felt sticky like it had product in. The best I've found so far is the cheap apple shampoo from Lidl

ExpectingToFly · 29/04/2020 22:52

This shampoo and conditioner are amazing! It works time after time, leaves my hair feeling great doesn't weigh it down etc. I wash every other day. Use dry shampoo even when I've just dried it to thicken it up. Highlights are also great to dry the roots out.

I'm going to order the Ting Tang product mentioned up the thread. Looks good!

Who is buying dry shampoo from Sephora for $36 when Batiste exists for £3?

BanjoStarz · 01/05/2020 18:01

I don’t really believe you can train your hair to need washing less often - like a PP says you produce the oil you produce, you couldn’t train your face to be less oily could you?

I have tried though - I broke my leg a few years back and showering was a mission so I tried to use that as an opportunity to wash my hair less...didn’t work, I eventually got to the stage where I was happy to wash every three days or so - mainly cos the third day my hair was put up and ignored.

As soon as I went back to work/gym/general life, it went back to needing to be washed every day otherwise it was dirty.

I’m seeing the same with lockdown, cos I’m not doing much my hair isn’t getting dirty so every three days is fine - I’m fully expecting to need to wash everyday when things are more normal.

TeaChocKitKat · 01/05/2020 19:34

I just wash my hair every morning. It's a hassle but I can't stand the itchiness on the morning of day two and by the afternoon of day two it's like an oil slick. (or as my mum tactfully says, it looks like I could cook chips in it). I wish I could go longer between washes but I really can't. I even started colouring my hair because a hairdresser said it might help to dry it up but it didn't help at all.

Lordamighty · 01/05/2020 19:37

I cured my lifelong greasy hair problem by stopping using conditioner, the difference is amazing.

Shefliesonherownwings · 01/05/2020 20:51

Thanks to those who have suggested a few things. I am basically going to work my way through and see if any of them work for me. If not, dry shampoo and hair up will have to be the way forward.

Washing your scalp in washing up liquid is the best thing for greasy hair. Makes your hair so shiny as well.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 02/05/2020 08:11

Training doesnt work. It didnt work for mine. The fact your hair was not greasy when pregnant and is now- is proof that its an internal thing likely to do with hormones (much the same as acne, and you cant train your face by not washing it not to produce acne).

I like Mediceuticals oily scalp and hair treatment- there is a whole range of products for excess oil and it really helped mine.

Blondefancy · 02/05/2020 08:13

I used to put talcum powder all over my scalp for 5 mins prior to shower and then wash it off avoiding putting any actual product on hair. Repeat process before every shower for a week and voila hair isn’t greasy anymore! I developed greasy hair from just the over use of product!

Lampan · 02/05/2020 08:15

My hair has been greasy ever since I was a teenager. My hair is very fine and I think that’s partly why. I just wash it every day or else I can’t stand the feel of it against my scalp.
The one thing that did help, and meant I could go 48 hours between washes, was a Lush shampoo bar (as pp has mentioned). For me the blue seaweed one is the best and my hair was amazing. However I stopped using that after a while cos lathering it in my hands was making my hands so dry. Choose between your hair or your hands 😄
