Obagi- worth it?

Is the range worth the price?
I’ve been recommended the Obagi cleanse (think it is the Nu-Derm gentle one), Obagi hydrate and the Obagi mineral spf.
Or is it overpriced and should I stick to Cerave/ Paula’s Choice?

Bump! I'd really like to know as well.

When it comes to expensive skincare, I follow the same principle as Caroline Hirons - cheap/expensive/ cheap. It means that only the middle step of your skincare routine - serum - benefits from higher-priced products which contain active ingredients, peptides, vit C, etc. Steps 1 and 3 - cleansing and moisturizing can be cheap as ingredients that help them do their job are very cheap.

So Obagi serum could be worth it but do check the ingredients. Cleanser- definitely not, it only stays on your skin for a few seconds. Sunscreen - the actual SPF is very similar across all prices ranges, it's the additional benefits that make a sunscreen more expensive or morw cheap - i.e. does it leave a white cast, is it oily on the skin, does it absorb well, etc.

Personally I spend as little as possible on SPF because it is crazy that some of them would cost £40 for 50 ml which would last you no more than a month. Finding a product that looks and feels nice on the skin takes time though. I like Korean brands for that.

Ooh following this as well.

Can anyone recommend a good reasonably priced SPF ?

MaryAnneMumof2 · 29/04/2020 01:15

Definitely worth it! I use the cleanse, the vit C serum and the hydrate moisturiser and they are amazing and my cosmetic doctor prescribed me tretanoin to use at nights. Used dermacologica and skinceuticals before but obagi much better, worth the investment!

MaryAnneMumof2 · 29/04/2020 01:19

Oh I should say I don’t use the Obagi spf - my doctor said heliocare brand was as good for SPF and it’s so much cheaper so I use that instead @cheeseycracker heliocare is a really good SPF- I wear the one with tint and so I don’t need to wear makeup with it. It is easy to wear, isn’t chalky like some can be.

MaryAnneMumof2 · 29/04/2020 01:21

P.S. I pay around £25 for the heliocare spf from the clinic I go to (may be able to get it even cheaper if you can get it online)

Following this too. I keep hearing people raving about it.

I like Obagi a lot - only thing that made a different to my melasma (pigmentation - started in pregnancy and got worse each time) although it hasn't gone completely. But that is the prescription stuff mostly. Vit C serum with hydroquinone in and Blender (hydroquinone) mixed with tretinoin at night. But Obagi hydrate is the nicest moisturiser ever for my skin. Annoying, as I agree with not spending too much on moisturiser or cleanser (use the Obagi cleanser too - the one with glycolic acid). And I use ZO spf. Expensive but better colour for me than Heliocare (which is too dark).

Blahblahblahyadayadayada · 29/04/2020 15:33

The person I spoke to actually said that the heliocare spf is better so not to fork out on the Obagi one. I’ll start with the cleanser and moisturiser and maybe build up to some of the others. I’d love to try the tretinoin.

@Blahblahblahyadayadayada yes definitely try tretanoin!

Tabithha · 29/04/2020 22:28

If you have hyperpigmentation it’s worth it. I don’t think the other stuff is. @cheeseycracker Cosrx have an aloe spf that’s pretty reasonable. Very moisturising and doesn’t leave a weird film/tint on the skins

JackieWallice · 22/09/2023 12:34

Worth it in the long run. You won't immediately see the difference. But a year or few of using clinically proven products, and the difference is night and day.

MustyDooDah · 15/05/2025 18:22

@Blahblahblahyadayadayada nearly two years on - did you get the Obagi moisturiser? I’m toying with it. Thank you

Blahblahblahyadayadayada · 15/05/2025 19:44

I did but I don’t remember what I thought of it! I have sensitivity issues, though.
