Hairdressers scissors

Hi all. My daughter is thinking of buying some hairdressers scissors. We don't want to pay loads - does anyone have any advice?

I got some off eBay for £3 but only planning to do the ends of my hair

chatterbugmegastar · 27/04/2020 14:30

Wow that's cheap! Do they work ok? I'm assuming you've tried them? Thanks

Professional salon scissors are several hundred pounds.

You're better just using tailor scissors as they are sharper than usual.

MikeUniformMike · 27/04/2020 14:56

I got some from Boots years ago. Don't use them for cutting things other than hair.

chatterbugmegastar · 27/04/2020 14:56

Oh I see. I didn't realise. So it's better to buy a tailors scissors than a cheap hairdressers scissors? Interesting - thank you

I suppose it's the sharpness which matters the most?

I second boots, I only use them to trim my fringe usually but I’ve recently tidied up the ends successfully too

Fabellini · 27/04/2020 14:59

I got some from Amazon a couple of weeks ago - needed to sort out my fringe - they were about a tenner and seem absolutely fine....better than the kitchen scissors anyway, and I like the wee hook on them that helps control how you’re cutting.
I won’t use them for anything other than hair, and I’m happy they’ll do the job until salons are able to open safely.

Shape and sharpness. Tailor's scissors tend to be quite big but hair cutting scissors are much smaller.

lpchill · 27/04/2020 15:05

Brought scissors from boots that looked and said hair cutting on them. Had them for years. When they start to go a little blunt I get some sandpaper and use the scissors to cut the paper into stripes which resharpens them. I wouldn't do that with expensive scissors or knifes but works well for cheap ones

chatterbugmegastar · 27/04/2020 15:43

Does anyone have a link to the scissors they bought which they'd recommend?

I bought boots ones years ago. Got them out today and they were ok. If I wanted to cut hair regularly I would splash out on a decent pair... for emergency trimming of DDs hair they did the job.

Thank you all Thanks

Sanguine hair scissors are fine.

I use them to trim my fringe every four to six weeks. Doing that they need replacing every year or so (on my third pair). As they are usually about a tenner that’s alright I think.

Get them from Amazon usually. Notice there are fewer options and they are a bit dearer than usual, but still not too bad.

I’ve used boots hairdressing scissors but recently bought a set of DMI professional scissors, the difference is absolutely night and day (hollow ground Japanese steel), incredibly smooth and sharp. They’re cheap for professional scissors (60) but expensive compared with normal retail scissors.

chatterbugmegastar · 29/04/2020 06:41

It must cost a small fortune for professional hairdressers to buy scissors!

I bought a pair for £9.99 from Amazon. I've used them on my fringe and to trim dd's hair. They were fine. I'm keeping them in the bedroom and have warned dd and dp that they are not to be used for anything else.

Actually, you can get decent hairdressing scissors which dont cost a fortune. If you know anyone who is in the trade hair/beauty/barbering, you could ask them to purchase some from a wholesalers. 30/40 quid will get you a decent pair that can be used at home.

SpeckledyHen · 29/04/2020 08:31

Ikea £1.25 for 3 pairs used here !

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/04/2020 11:21

I bought some from Sally’s, they were £25. I have a short, blunt fringe, and they worked really well.

Parahebe · 29/04/2020 14:23

I bought these hairdressing scissors mid March and they're good - certainly good enough for what I need. They were £16. They have now doubled in price.
