Lockdown grey??

Hi! I'm 37 with very long dark hair that has been going grey since I was 12. I've always dyed it and I love my hair but since lockdown I obviously haven't been going to the hairdressers and I would say I'm probably now 70% grey at the roots. My face still looks youngish and I keep staring in the mirror every day wondering whether to just grow it out to see what it might look like. I quite like the idea of silvery grey hair, my eyebrows are still very dark, almost black...

Has anyone bitten the bullet and done this already?? I'm so tempted but it feels strange to contemplate not being a brunette anymore!

There’s another thread about this! I’ll try and find it for you....

Yes, I'm a similar age and have done it. I still miss being a brunette but I have accepted that I'm, just, well... not a brunette any more. I don't LOVE everything about being grey, I still have my doubts sometimes, but I've done it. And I'll never have to do it again or agonize over doingit again. I see grey hair differently now and I see dyed hair differently.
I understand those who say "dye till I die" because I used to be like that too.
This might be your time, it might not. It might even be a good time due to lock down or maybe you'll just buy a box dye and save lots of money anyway, if you like it.
What kept me going is knowing I could dye it again any time. I never did and in fact I have often dreamt that I did and woke up in a bit of a panic.
Going natural can be temporary. Colouring rarely is temporary. Give it a go, I say.

I had really long hair and got fed up of dying it, had it cut short (not possible at thr moment I know) and stayed my natural grey colour, best thing I ever done x

I’ve been growing mine out for a year and I’m about halfway there. I am about 40% grey and really enjoying the journey. I was wobbly on and off for about 6 months and then something just clicked. It’s not about letting yourself go, it’s about letting yourself be.

It’s not about letting yourself go, it’s about letting yourself be.

I like this a lot.

Been growing mine out for a year and 4 months. There is only a bit of colour left on the ends. I have brown hair with white through it. I am happy with it.

Hmm it's so tempting... Im very aware of my grey roots at the moment but I also can't be bothered to do a box dye, just knowing I'll need to do it again in 3 weeks time! I'm also very curious to see what it might look like

I stopped dying mine 4 years ago and I still feel a bit taken aback when I see myself sometimes, because in my head I have very dark hair, but actually I really like it. I still have a lot of dark hair at the back and underneath, but on top and near my face is silver. I have been told it looks really cool and people have thought I have it highlighted like this, and they are surprised when I say it is natural.
My hair is below shoulder length and I just let it grow out with trims every 3 months. The first few months are the worst because it just looks like your roots need doing, rather than you are growing it out, but after that it's not so bad.

I was ten years older than you though and found that trying to dye to my old natural colour looked too dark, lighter browns looked too red and I didn't want to go the route of going blonde and the expense of monthly salon visits.
What I would say is until it's fully grown out you can't really see the natural colour properly and mine took about about two and a half to three years to be fully free from dye.

I did mine pre-camera phones so it was after a holiday when I got the pictures developed that it first hit home. I was like "where's my hair gone???"

The only downside for mine is it just seems to disappear in pictures.

@ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords your hair sounds exactly like mine. I’m 39. In my head I’m dark brown and I’m always shocked in photos.

I’ve gradually gone very blonde, which I find really weird. The last couple of times I’ve had my foils done I’ve had less and had them more spread out so gradually the natural colour is coming through. I’m completely white on top along my parting but around the side and base of my skull I’m around 40% grey and I think it’s more grey than white.

I’m interested to see what it’s like after lockdown. I’m not sure I will be brave enough to completely give up some of the blonde to break it up a bit but I will gradually phase it out. I still really hate it in photos.
