Retinol or azelaic acid product suitable for teenage skin?

I've watched some of the videos from dermatologists recommended on here and decided it could be a good idea, during lockdown, to add retinol or azelaic acid to DDs (14) skin routine.

Are there any known brand products to stay with? I'd prefer something around the £15 category. Or alternative is to contact the GP to see if they'd prescribe but seems a difficult option at the moment. Her spots are still at the comedonal acne stage and she cleanses twice per day, once with a cleaner containing salislyc acid, plus she applies a salyslic acid spot gel. It goes some way to clearing her skin but those forehead bumps remain stubborn.

Start with not stay.

I’d go for a retinol & start her on spf 50 every day.

Any brand suggestions?

Well the ordinary do several.

She’ll need a proper sunblock though. Px azaelic acid did nothing for my skin.

I personally don't find the ordinary products great but they are affordable. Paulas choice is my favourite.

Paula’s Choice is good but maybe not for a retinol newbie.

Jordan Samuels Skin retinol oil is gentle and lovely (Cult Beauty).

Have you looked at Dermatica? Online prescription service. I’ve got topical adapalene (Differin essentially) from them.

Thank you Notexactly. I will take a look and see if they will deal with an under 16 year old in that way. Thanks for the recommendations also.

I was going to suggest Dermatica too but you could also try the boots or superdrug acne clinics (both online). You can get adapalene (differin) and/or azelaic through them but not sure what their stance is on a 14yo, tends to be cheaper than Dermatica as it's not a monthly fee.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 22/04/2020 19:49

You don’t have to pay monthly with Dermatica. I never use a full tube per month. I get mine every 56 days so cheaper.
