Hair dye fix

I've been at home for 5 weeks now and it was few weeks before that I had my colour done (blonde highlights). I now have pretty dark roots and quite brassy lengths. Does anyone have an idea of a home dye I could use to make it look slightly less awful?

Bumping this for any help!

The problem is that box dyes wont lighten the dark hair that much so it may be left more orange than blonde. You could try purple shampoo on the brassy lengths but I wouldn't try bleaching the roots unless you had someone to help you

I'm just letting mine grow just now as I also have highlights and dark roots with grey hairs.

A toner will help with brassiness. Toner is usually sold in superdrug and savers. They do sell highlighting blonde kit box dyes, I don't know how easy they are to use though as I've never tried.

Thanks, toner is a good idea. Or should I just box dye it light brown? Is that mad?

Brown dye on bleached/highlighted hair will turn out green, you need to do a red or ginger filler first. When I lived in Britain, I used Wella Shaders and Toners for filling, but I heard they’re not available anymore. You just need a deposit-only colour to replace your red pigment layer before using a brown dye. HTH.

Thanks @Livingoncake. Sounds like it's definitely something to leave to the pros then.

Just do a good purple shampoo (fanola best by a country mile) and spray your roots with a concealer until you can get to the hairdresser. Do not try messing about with blonde hair at home!!

Or if you wanted to have some fun, you could take advantage of the highlighted bit to play with some pastel colours, though they might be hard to remove if/when lockdown ends and you want to go back to blonde.
