Make-up at nearly 50. Help me change....

Hi,

Soon to be 50 and never really worn a huge amount of anything tbh(eyeshadow, lipstick and slight foundation to cover up blemishes). But now have time to actually make myself do something about this. Have lots of brushes and tools to use as I keep telling myself I will do something about it but never do and always blame being too busy with family and work.
Seen so many online tutorials(my teenage daughter knows more than me I would say) but don't know where to start. I just want to learn some tricks especially getting to 50. Skin in pretty good shape but dry and am pale skinned.

Any ideas about where to look most gratefully received :) Might as well make the most of this lockdown.

I'm 49, but wear makeup every day and always have done. My advice would be to start with basics and build up gradually, because if you are not used to wearing much makeup it will be easy for you to feel unnatural and over made up.
So I'd go for a good foundation, No. 7 Hydraluminous is good for dry skin, mascara and lipstick, maybe blusher/bronzer if you feel pale. I have eyelash extensions so dont wear mascara but loved benefit They're real before, I love Mac lipsticks, they have a thing where you can upload a picture of yourself and 'try them on ' virtually.

I wear it every day too. Blusher is wondrous stuff if you’re pale like me. A lightweight foundation, mascara & lipstick, not too bright & scary to start can make a huge difference when you’re pasty.
If you want to experiment without risk you could order from QVC. Lots of videos on their website demonstrating the different products ( if you don’t want to watch the tv channel) & a money back guarantee if it doesn’t suit, currently 60 days instead of the usual 30. Unlike returning stuff to shops, frowned upon with makeup, you’re allowed to use it during that time & so all you risk is the postage if you decide it’s not for you.

QVC do some really good brands - Bare Minerals, Mally , Tarte, Laura Gellar, Doll 10, (loads more)

I do watch the videos because I really don't like going into a shop and either getting pounced on or ignored .

I don't wear make-up ( at work very few people do) . I've got brushes ( random collection) , blusher, eye pencils, mascara , lip balms .
I keep saying I'll treat myself to a really nice brush set but my DD says "Why - you don't actually wear make-up " (Well I might do if I had nice brushes ?)

Once lockdown is over , why not think about having your brows and eyelashes dyed? Maybe eyelash lift/perm like LVL ?

I’m like you and wear the bare minimum so will read this thread with interest.

Spaceprincess · 19/04/2020 19:17

@Darklane blusher is wondrous stuff! I'm not pale but it totally lifts my whole face.

Thighdentitycrisis · 19/04/2020 19:28

I’m early 50’s and grey and I want to know how to find a lipstick that will look good on me.

I wear light make up when I go to the office but would like to have a lipstick to give a bit more serious made up feel.

Sorry for hijack OP but it might help both of us!

I’m a big fan of Glossier makeup as it’s super-light and sheer, and really buildable. I especially love their cloud paint cream blush and their mascara, which looks really natural even with no other eye makeup. Their concealers are lovely and sheer and creamy too - great if you have good but dryish skin like I do.
I’d also recommend using a decent acid toner - pixi glow tonic is a good starting point.

KnitFastDieWarm · 19/04/2020 19:32

I’m 32, for reference - but I’ve seen this stuff on people from 18-80 and it makes everyone look fresh-faced and natural.

I am not an expert but am 50+

I really like Bobbi Brown make up
Les Beiges tinted moisturiser from Chanel
Lipsticks - Nars, Mac & Bobbi Brown

will look into Glossier

what I cannot find is a mascara that makes my sparse stubby eyelashes look good & doesn't leave me with panda eyes …..

Have a look at Hannah Martin on you tube and Instagram. She was the head makeup artist for Bobbi Brown, but is freelance now. She does lovely, wearable makeup looks that are easy to follow.
