Anyone else starting curly girl method during lockdown?

I started a few days ago, I figured if my hair looks crap at least no one has to see it. Got all my products, all silicone and sulphate free, and a silk bonnet to sleep in. Curls are looking ok but quite rats tail like. There’s still a little bit of frizz too.

I’m an every day hair washer, currently trying to get my hair to adapt to every other day but the on the second day it definitely looks greasy and limp. Very glad I don’t have to go anywhere or look presentable!

Is anyone else giving this a go, or done it in the past? How long does it take for the lovely curls to appear and stop looking like I’ve been dragged backwards through a hedge?!

What are praying hands?

BemidjiMinnesota · 09/05/2020 12:16

@Rollerbird you put your hands together like you're praying and slide them down your hair to smooth the product on.

Rollerbird · 09/05/2020 12:17

My products are arriving today (I'm at work now)
I CAN'T WAIT 😁

BemidjiMinnesota · 09/05/2020 12:20

Good luck! I wish you whimsical curls and not Duran Duran hair Smile

Cynderella · 09/05/2020 12:46

@BemidjiMinnesota Thank you - I think I have more of an understanding now.

Was going to try to leave ,y hair alone for a couple of days, but very tempted to try again tonight now.

I have (had, I've just shaved it all off!) a lot of 2b/c hair and I couldn't follow CG to the letter as it just looked shit.

Firstly, only cowashing made my scalp itchy. I had to use a clarifying shampoo once every 10 days to deal with the sticky build up feel and that improved things massively.

I also used a denman brush when it was wet and had all my products in, then scrunched it into curls before letting it air dry or part drying with a diffuser. Doing the clump method/plopping was futile, I looked like a wild woman.

One day 2 and 3 I'd have to wet my hair with a sprayer and scrunch a little more product in to refresh the curls. Even then it was more likely to be put up in a bun than left loose.

Squish to condish was great for distributing products evenly.

Shea and cantu were too heavy for my hair, so I tried curlsmith. They are much better for wavy hair as their products don't weigh it down so much. A little goes a long way.

Well I asked my husband what he thought as he likes straight hair the best but he said it's not been anywhere as bad as he thought! I need to say he isn't suggesting at all I straighten my hair and is happy to support my choice before anyone thinks otherwise! I'm taking that as a win Grin

Cynderella · 09/05/2020 19:20

Resisted temptation to re-wash, but I did have a go at 'plopping' my dry hair into a T-shirt. Got into a mucking fuddle, so need to rewatch that video clip.

Am also thinking, if it's going to take so long to dry, and is going to look worse next day, it might be best to wash my hair in the morning. Usually, I do it in the evening, so I don't have to rush, but that's not an issue these days.

SheepSocks · 09/05/2020 22:04

I believe the method is starting to work for me, I had to scrape my hair back today but it was day 3 since I last washed it. Hopefully this means that my hair is learning to behave!

Rollerbird · 10/05/2020 09:31

Waiting for it to dry. 1st attempt

What do you think?
Its definitely curly, but looks untamed...

@Rollerbird I would be more than happy with that result!

Have co-washed again and waiting for it to dry. Used a lot of custard, maybe too much.

Rollerbird · 10/05/2020 13:34

Aw thanks @cynderella
I ended up putting more gel in, scrunching, clipping some of the back, and am dog walking in the wind, looking like a dogs dinner! Will scrunch out the crunch soon when I'm home and report back again 😂

Justtakeatowel · 13/05/2020 08:54

I think I was going wrong by not 'washing' my hair upside down. I've had a couple of goodish days so still persevering for now!

BemidjiMinnesota · 13/05/2020 11:24

That's great justtakeatowel ! It's all about learning what works for you and what your hair likes. When I first started I'd heard that you could wash your hair then go to bed with wet hair wrapped in a t shirt and wake up with perfect curls. Who are these people that can do that?! My hair was a damp, frizzy mess.

Cynderella · 13/05/2020 16:43

Just done another wash today. If I had to go back into the world. I wouldn't be at all confident going out with this hair! It's looking better this time, but it looks unkempt rather than casual. I can see the beginnings of curls, but no more than that.

Also, tomorrow, it will look very flat - the sort of look I used to get if I washed my hair normally and left it to dry. I'll keep going because it's only the first week.

Rollerbird · 13/05/2020 17:31

Mine looks fine at the front after sleeping but flat and straggly at the back

Rollerbird · 13/05/2020 18:53

Today. Happy with how it's all going except the after sleeping rear of the head look.

Rollerbird · 13/05/2020 18:53

No pic

Cynderella · 13/05/2020 19:06

Straggly - that was the technical term I was after.

Rollerbird · 13/05/2020 22:03

@cynderella 😂😂

Justtakeatowel · 16/05/2020 09:18

Anyone else having to wash every day? I'm so fed up of not finding a quick refresh routine. I have to soak my hair so to my mind it's not a quick refresh as I have the same issue of looking shit whilst it dries and actually not much better afterwards. I'm wondering how long it's going to take to transition and look vaguely presentable!!!

Today is definitely not a good hair day!!!!!!!

Cynderella · 16/05/2020 09:50

I'm not sure if mine is looking better, or if I've just got used to it. I've got an empty spray bottle that I've refilled with water and a teaspoon of gel shaken up. In the morning, I spray with that, but it's not enough. Once damp, I need to scrunch through more gel.

I'm willing to stick with it because my hair feels OK, and I am still hopeful. But if i had to go back to work tomorrow, I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable going out without blow drying it.

Justtakeatowel · 16/05/2020 12:45

@Cynderella that's exactly how I feel. I've been out to the supermarkets and for walks but the thought of having a whole day in work with awful hair doesn't really appeal! I'm going to stick with it for now, at least having a break from straighteners is a good thing.

I find my hair feels nice on day 1 but feels awful and dirty on day 2. If I was working outside of home I'd need to get up at 4.30/5 every morning to wash as I've not had a good day 2 yet.

Have tried a new routine today, it's gone quite fluffy though so not sure I'd repeat it!

Rollerbird · 16/05/2020 13:12

I've had success by lightly wetting the next day and re scrunching/diffusing
