Any recommendations?

You need to look for trainers with a heel to toe drop.

It’s a common requirement for some runners.

Brooks, Hoka one one or Saucony could help. Maybe research running sites to have a look, or post in the exercise section.

For a cheaper alternative, Skechers GoRum have a cushioned sole and a roomy toe box.

Hoka

I've been running in them for a while now.

If you need a neutral sole road shoe, try the Clifton. I think the supportive equivalent is the Arahi.

Some people think a highly cushioned trail shoe is an ankle injury waiting to happen, but if you want more traction on something slimy but not too rough, then the Challenger wouid be fine

Assics are the most comfy in my opinion .. they come in lovely colours too with a thick sole .

BloggersNetwork · 21/04/2020 08:23

Thank you everyone. Still undecided. As I continue with my Couch to 5 (week 3 now) I have pain on my shins, just above the ankle (anterior), funnily enough it affects me more when I am doing the walking part than the running part.

I wonder if it might be a good idea that I buy men's trainers as they're likely to be wider. Does it really matter?

Buy a size up, nearly always the case with running.

Sackofspuds · 21/04/2020 08:55

Brooks are comfy. Try adding a pair of running heel supports.

Look for a trail running shoe. . The soles are thicker and harder, I run (jog) around the local streets and trail runners definetly feel better.

Tote · 21/04/2020 09:15

Oh and I use a karrimor shoe.

BusterTheBulldog · 21/04/2020 09:41

Hi @BloggersNetwork I know with Nike’s the difference between men and women’s sizing was about 2mm I had assumed that was on the length but might be all around? I have bought men’s before in my size and notice no difference in size tbh.

Do you have a local running shop? A lot are offering online analysis (not sure how good it would be!) but they could probably be a good sounding board for you. Also if you sign up to Nike plus (free) you can try trainers and send them back.

I've been after a pair of trainers (or suitable shoes) with good cushioning for walking, and maybe what the OP meant or thinks that to gain the cushioning you need more height. However, I am still wearing a pair of Clarks trainer shoes, I've had 12 years. They are perfect. Good cushioning without being high as such, and waterproof. Sadly the soles are quite thin but on smooth ground they are still good. I don't jog, never have because it's never really suited me, but walk a fair bit.

Oh that's a nasty link, sorry

I wouldn't. Under Armour shoes really aren't rated at all.

The Sauconys on Sportsshoes in the sale - either the Triumphs or the Jazz - are the same price and far, far better.

BloggersNetwork · 23/04/2020 18:29

Thank you Running, what do you think of these ones?

They'd be good - more than adequate for what you need - but these are a better shoe:

Runningonempty84 · 23/04/2020 18:53

Or for extra support and stability (which it sounds like you want), the Saucony Guide is better still:

BloggersNetwork · 23/04/2020 19:22

thank you Running those two you have linked to don't have my size. I think I'd also feel self-conscious wearing such bright colours. The last thing I want is to draw any attention to my running!

OP posts:
Runningonempty84 · 23/04/2020 21:53

Trust me, nobody is looking at your feet! They have lots of different versions of the Guide and the Triumph on there in the sale. If none of them work size or colour wise, the Jazz is also cheap and is better than the Clarion. The Clarion will still be fine though!

N0tfinished · 23/04/2020 22:02

I have New Balance 880's. They're really cushioned & supportive

Update everyone. I have gone for the Hoka One One Clifton in wide fit. Wish me luck!

OP posts:
Runningonempty84 · 24/04/2020 20:13

Oh great! I hope you get on well with them.

Wistfulthinking · 31/05/2020 08:39

Hi @BloggersNetwork I was wondering if you could update and let us know you got on with your new trainers? I am considering similar trainers. Thanks!

JingleCatJingle · 31/05/2020 10:17

I have hobbity feet and run in hoka arahis. Ran a marathon in them and highly recommend!
