Mourned clothes of yester-year

Do you have clothes from your past that you still hanker after? I used to have this denim jacket in the 00s. I think it was from Oasis (90% of my clothes were from there or warehouse) and it was a traditional denim jacket shape, but with quite stretchy material with metallic thread running through it. I loved it and wore it with everything and can’t remember what happened to it.

In The late 90s I reeeaaaallly wanted a pair of Maharishi trousers. The baggy combat ones with the embroidery, as worn by All Saints. I was a poor student though so couldn't justify them. I'd still love a pair now!
In fact I miss that whole look...baggy, low-rise combats, with a little vest top! So comfy!!

CountFosco · 14/04/2020 21:18

I had a prussian blue suede A line mini from Top Shop (size 10 when that meant something) that barely covered my bum that I bought circa 1995. Wore it with a tiny black tshirt, black opaque tights and DMs. I loved that skirt so much (so did DH Wink). Got too fat for it and stupidly got rid.

Katyjayne72 · 14/04/2020 21:37

I had a gorgeous black crocheted lace cover up from Miss Selfridge in 1990 which I used to wear over a little crop top. It was very versatile as I could wear it with shorts, mini skirts or jeans. I think I donated it to a charity shop, but I still think about it and would love to have it back!

A beautiful BCBG embroidered cropped cardigan from Paris - lost on a night out Sad

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 14/04/2020 21:43

Green tweed suit with a fur collar I bought from from red or dead on Manchester’s king street. I had a flippy Betty boo hair style and thought I was the bees knees!

Also have nostalgia for a black leather strapless dress from Morgan - I bought it with my first wage packet. That dress served me well many a night in the hacienda! Wish I’d kept it..

TheCanterburyWhales · 14/04/2020 21:48

Katyjane- I think I had the same. I had lots of crochet see through thingies that I looked so damn good in.

A red leather biker jacket that my mum sold for £4.

Half a dozen vintage suede skirts and long waistcoats from Afflecks Palace in Manchester.

A tight red dress (before Bodycon became a thing) from Miss Selfridge

A crushed velvet catsuit Grin

I had two amazing pairs of trousers from these 90s designers called Vexed Generation - one pair was baggy denim trousers that had a sort of built-in bondage strap that emerged from out of a hole in one side leg and stitched on to the other leg. The other were heavy black wool trousers that zipped up diagonally across the front and the zip spiralled all the way down to the ankle of one leg (you could in theory unzip the whole trousers that way). They were the most expensive item of clothing I'd ever bought at the time (£130) - I remember my heart racing after I paid for them!

pinkazing · 14/04/2020 21:49

@HoHoHolyCow I bought a Pink pair they are now in storage but I will never throw them I love them. But it’s weird that favourite clothes just disappear, I have shoes I loved, one pair of white mules and a pair of white wedge canvas shoes I loved, I’ve bought many replacements, but never the same.

pinkazing · 14/04/2020 21:52

Oh and so many amazing clubbing outfits from Morgan. That shop only sold tat covered in its logos or perfect items that you wore to death

ADreamOfGood · 14/04/2020 21:52

A dress from Miss Selfridge that I bought just before university. It was burgundy with ditsy print flowers, tea dress, it was just perfect. I was too big for it after two children, and sent it to the charity shop the house move before last... of course, ten years on I'm slim again and I miss it so much!

ADreamOfGood · 14/04/2020 21:55

The other item I regret giving away is an army surplus German army coat. It was the warmest thing I've ever owned!
Miss my combats too, but I don't think they'd suit me now.

OublietteBravo · 14/04/2020 21:58

A black/white floral skater skirt form Top Shop circa 1992. I bought it in the sale and wore it all the way through 6th form and university. I’ve no idea what happened to it.

A pair of black wide-legged trousers with a turquoise/blue floral pattern. They were from M&S and had an elasticated waist. I know they sound hideous, but the cut was amazing and I adored them. They met a sad end when one leg became tangled in a bicycle chain on my way to a summer job, and got ripped beyond repair.

A pair of black platform trainers from Ravel. Worn with flared jeans circa 1998. God I loved those shoes.

Athenajm80 · 14/04/2020 21:59

A top from Pilot. It was sleeveless with a kind of mandarin collar, a zip up the front from belly button level and a zip from the same point down to the hem, about 2 cm. The material was a shiny-ish (not wet look!) stiff material so it held everything in and up, not that I needed the help when I was 16. It made my boobs look awesome and was my absolute favourite top for years till I put on a bit too much weight and it didn't fit anymore. It still took about another 4 years before I got rid of it.
Also all my Goth clothing, I had a good collection of corsets, pvc tops etc. I'd love to get some of them back (not that I'd fit then anymore)

HoHoHolyCow · 14/04/2020 22:22

@pinkazing they sound awesome! I'm so jealous!

Hobbes8 · 15/04/2020 07:56

@HoHoHolyCow I had a knock off pair from River Island - they were brown with embroidery all down one leg. I also had a stretch pair of jeans from river island with glitter all down the fronts. They were so stretchy they survived quite a bit of weigh gain before I finally gave up on them - no idea when.

This thread has made me nostalgic for 90s shops - Pilot! Morgan! Also since starting this thread and stating I bought all my clothes from oasis and warehouse they’ve both announced they’re going into administration - sob!

Hitchhiking in Europe with my boyfriend in the mid 70s, we got a lift with a really pleasant Dutch couple. We were heading north and it was getting colder, and I had no coat. The wife insisted on giving me her old brown suede jacket, it was a boxy shape, very soft because well worn. I wore it for many more years until it literally fell apart. I can’t remember throwing it away, but I must have. I still miss it.

ReginaGeorgeous · 15/04/2020 08:41

I had a pirate cardigan from All Saints I bought for £85 in 2007. It was merino wool and beautiful, I lived in it.
It met a sad end. I left it on top of a laundry basket and my bastard of a cat made a bed on it. His claws absolutely shredded the sleeves. I’ve never forgiven him.

Ratonastick · 15/04/2020 09:53

I had a black suede blazer from (I think) Topshop in the mid 90s. I wore until it went bald and fell apart. I loved it and I’ve never found another coat like it.

HoHoHolyCow · 15/04/2020 16:45

@Hobbes8 I love the sound of your glittery jeans! I had a glittery white t-shirt from Replay with glittery Angel wings printed on the back. It glowed beautifully in the UV lights of Shag in Edinburgh. Happy days :)

peaceanddove · 15/04/2020 18:59

A sleeveless midi dress from Miss Selfridge back in 1989, white cotton patterned with large cabbage roses and tiny buttons all down the front. I loved that dress so much and I wore it with thick black tights and DMs.

dkanin · 15/04/2020 19:12

A few clubbing garments from Morgan which I wore until they fell to bits years later, they were good quality by today's standards. I was also very attached to a black Japanese style mini dress from Jane Norman with turquoise floral embroidery. It was probably a bit tacky but at 17 it was very expensive for me and the height of sophistication

CharDeeMacDennis · 15/04/2020 19:28

Beautiful velvet Monsoon skirt I bought from a charity shop in Edinburgh as a student in late 90s... Was dark burgundy, really dark winey colour, full length, heavy velvet with beautiful drape. Simple cut with a teeny waist (that I had then Grin)

Ah, was gorgeous, outstanding quality.

Also a 3/4 length tweedy 1940s-style skirt around the same time, also from a chazza - beautiful cut, fitted like a glove, made me feel like Lauren Bacall! Used to wear it with an ivory silk blouse.

Charity shops were ace back then.

Eskarina1 · 15/04/2020 19:36

A long teal blue wool and cashmere mix coat, bought in the sale and worn to dust.

Redcrayons · 15/04/2020 19:51

I gave away loads of my pre baby clothes thinking I’d never been thin again so wouldn’t wear them. I lost the baby weight 10 years later and I still mourn the perfect denim shorts every single summer I gave away. I also gave away a gorgeous blue silk shirt from Warehouse at the same time. Pre baby it fitted perfectly and it was such an unusual colour. I don’t really wear a lot of smart work clothes anymore but whenever I do, I always think about my silk shirt.

I had a lovely black going out jacket, which I left in a club. It would fold up into my handbag but was really warm so was perfect for post club taxi queue.

And also lost to the cloakroom of a dingy club, my full length winter wool coat.

VenusClapTrap · 15/04/2020 20:16

I had a good humoured fight with my mum over a brown suede trench coat in Zara back in the late nineties. It was the last one, and a bargain in the sale. She pulled rank and won.

Sadly, she died only a few years later, so I ended up with the coat anyway. I was so fond of it - it made any outfit look cool in an understated way, and went with absolutely everything. It also held those precious memories of my mum.

Eventually, after years of constant wearing, the shoulder tore. I kidded myself nobody would notice as it was in quite a hidden place, but after an evening out for dinner with my Dad he shoved a big pile of cash into my hand and told me to go and buy myself some new clothes; we must be a bit stretched financially as he’d noticed me wearing an old torn coat. Blush

So sadly I retired it to the back of the wardrobe. I still can’t bring myself to throw it away.
