Need to take my mind off things - can anyone help with an Autumn wardrobe please?

Since Autumn is definatly on it's was I guess I need to think about getting some autumn clothes but am pants at all this fashion lark.

Ok, low down on me - 5'2" size 16, but more than likely 18 if im not going for the muffin effect, brown hair but it's kinda got copper/gold/blonde aswell in it (i'll try and post a pic). All I really do is shopping, go to the park, library, peoples houses etc. so it's casual things. I can't wear heels because I run after DS too much but I am just about to throw my blooming trainers out the window I am so sick of them.

Thanks if you can help, I'll go try and post my pic in profile x

you do not need Fashion, you need Style
first thing
throw trainers
get boots

if you are 6.5 or smaller these may hit the spot, but if you can cope with a bigger heel (as bottom right here) or wedge as the three here they will be much more flattering and open the World of Skirts to you.

all else will follow

Quootiepie · 13/09/2007 18:15

Got one pic up, best one of face that'll load, i'll try and get the one of me waddling on the beach, full legnth too.

Boots? WIll they fit round my calves? I'll look at the links now thankyou x

aaah, the wedge are definatly the best ,sorry but to the untrained eye like mine, the others look like work boots and I feel I would look very dumpy in them. Forgot to mention without sounding rude I want to look my age (ish) not older... which is how I look when I try to fashionable, but dress like a mum

ah, gotcha - having seen you are 20 you may need someone less, ancientandfuddyduddy-- advanced in years than me...
Evans do good boots though - these are pretty cool

Quootiepie · 13/09/2007 18:39

am 21, hasn't updated. Would I look ok in those boots? Not like a short fat biker?

worth trying
would certainly look good with trousers

Gemy · 13/09/2007 21:37

Definatly go with the boots but maybe you're better off getting them from Duo as you can select a specific calve measurement and most of them come in black and brown...

Also, if your legs are nice, you can opt for thick black tights, flat boots and a shorter skirt? Teamed with a high-neck top (to avoid sluttishness) and some beads/necklace this can be a good look for autumn.

Quootiepie · 14/09/2007 06:33

Duo looks great at the prices though, I have never spent that much on shoes but I guess everyone needs a decent pair of boots . Would tights and short skirt look ok on me? I am abit (!) lardy!

Yes Duo are pricey but are good quality and there's a certain feeling that goes with wearing boots that fit perfectly and knowing you look great and it goes something like this

I think you'd look great in a shorter skirt - the matt black tights are very slimming and you are young enough to carry this off. The best thing is to go and try some on whilst wearing thick tights (or take some with you!) and see if you like the look on you. Try on the slightly flared ones, in a good draping fabric (as in not lightweight) that, if pos, are lined to stop right-up (a common occurance when wearing tights and skirts!)

If you're really not sure about the shorter ones then go for knee/below the knee that are a-line but not super-flary so they skim your curves without giving a thunder thigh inpression (flary) or saugage-leg (too tight and straight) Those that skim hips and kick out a little at bottom are really flattering and give a lovely hourglass effect

Quootiepie · 14/09/2007 14:08

I did see this - would that go with boots & tights and not make me look like a big marshmallow? simplybeuk.drct2u.com/productcache/DAL/BO5460/MK053JR.html.gz

Sorry I am abit confused about the skirt thing, I'll go and find some and see what you think...

I can't find any skirts - the one I liked in Topshop doesn't go beyond a 14

bump

plus hoping for more tips, I;m very like Quootie in size etc and four stone overweight, (although doing well on GI diet) wanting something flattering. will go for the Duo boots, what else would work? normally I follow the trinny and susanna rules - long skirts (footballers legs) but since having DS have huge norks, not sure how to make the best of them (apart from decent bra) want to show them off without looking like a desperate slapper

basically I feel like a fat old moo at the moment, could really do with a boost, am useless at makeup etc and always looked ok without but now (aged 36) could probably do with wearing something to look a bit more perky. keep focusing on my beautiful baby (DS2 6months, also cute DS1 aged 3.5) but feel like a deflated balloon

I see mrs badger is a busy bee on this section - mrs b, you're genius tip about retrieving things stuck down a radiator has been a life-saver many times. you are obviously a very wise bird of MN'er

thanks for all tips

dazedandconfunded · 15/09/2007 12:20

Radiator retrieval! tell me moooooore!

Gemy · 15/09/2007 15:08

Hi quootiepic, I really nice that sweater dress and you can wear in over a polo neck too. How about looking out for other sweater-dresses? And the thing with skirts it you always have to find a top - with a dress et voila!

KristinaM · 15/09/2007 15:31

t4t - i have huge BF norks too. I believe the rules are

no double breasted coats / jackets

no polo necks or crew necks

nothing buttoned up to teh neck

v necks or scoop necks are best

but i am not a style guru - i'm sure one will be along soon

KristinaM · 15/09/2007 15:35

re not looking like a slapper - teh rule is that if you are showing a bit of flesh here, you shoudl be modest elsewhere ie not a short skirt

so woudl look fine with your long skirt and long boot look

with short skirt and dark tights you shouldnt show cleavage i think. as gemy says, you need a modest top.

Gemy · 16/09/2007 13:30

KristinaM you are right about the neckline situation for us well endowered women. I sometimes do wear a poloneck though, but also wear a minimiser bra to off-set the otherwise shelf-like boobs in such a top.
