Hi all, I’m quite pale and have terrible dry skin in certain places on my face. I moisturise day and night, always take my makeup off before bed, use cleanser and toner. I always apply a primer before putting makeup on and my skin still looks dry sometimes flakey. I have used, MAC, NYX, Boujours, illamasqua, revlon, max factor and Elizabeth Arden. I’ve also used bb creams and tinted moisturiser but I can’t get the coverage I need. Any recommendations please?

'Flower Beauty Foundation' is available online at Superdrug. It's part of the makeup line created by Drew Barrymore and goes on beautifully. I discovered it myself after seeing a makeup artist recommend it.

Hi Sallyjo sorry I cannot recommend a foundation ( I usually mix mine with some moisturizer) but I read you use toner when you remove your makeup. I have very dry patches on my skin too and found it wasn’t so bad when I stopped using this and just used creamy cleanser

Address your skincare first. I'd recommend Clinique - particularly the moisture surge cream. Sorted out my dry skin amazingly, it's really light and a very little goes a long way.

Also consider a primer - my favourite is the Too Faced hangover rx primer - I can really tell the difference when I only use it. Foundation goes on much better over it and it keeps skin really plump and hydrated through the day.

A lot of the problem with dry skin and foundation is that your dry skin immediately sucks the moisture out of the foundation making it look crappy.

Avoid anything mattifying (no matter what the marketing says about being for all skin types!) Unfortunately you will find that the range of suitable foundations is small - most are made for normal/oily skin.

Flower beauty is a nice one if you can get a shade match. Nyx barely there is nice too, and the hydrating foundation from Kiko. I love the original smashbox one too (not the newer full coverage one). The ordinary serum foundation is fab too.

Another trick I've had success with is to use concealer in the place of foundation - there seem to be more dry skin friendly concealers out there than foundations. The nyx can't stop won't stop concealer is particularly good (can't vouch for the actual foundation).

But honestly start with the skincare.

Use CeraVe wash and cream to sort your skin out and you'll be able to wear any foundation ,I cannot sing it's praises enough.

I have eczema and use bareminerals it's brilliant

I have the same type of skin and no foundation will look good until you change your skincare and get rid of the dry patches- like a previous poster has said you need to ditch the toner completely, and I would also recommend changing your cleanser to a cleansing balm - Vitage or Elemis are the best ones Ive found, and find a moisturiser that's especially for dry skin- Kiehls do a great one that got rid of my dry patches in days.

After that id recommend the Estee Lauder Futurist Hydra Rescue and setting it with Bare Minerals Original foundation powder- i literally have glowy perfect skin all day when I do this!

I've always had terribly dry, sensitive skin and used to use a Clinique foundation that was perfect then it was discontinued so the horrible search had to start again. For the past 2 years I've used YSL touché eclat foundation and it is amazing. Very light and silky, a medium coverage and does not cling to dry patches or make my skin worse and lasts a 13hr sweaty shift! There are so many shades to choose from too.

Also the body shop heavy duty face protector is amazing for dry patches!

Smashbox Studio Skin is my everyday. It's a hydrating one, natural finish and I find it gives quite a dewy effect. Long-wearing too.
I really really love the ABH Luminous foundation but it doesn't last the day.
Also recommend the Lancôme Prep and Hydrate primer (not to be confused with Prep and Matte!!) to go underneath 😊

N7 Hydraluminous is my new foundation holy grail.

When you say you use cleanser and toner- what sort? Any serums? Maybe a thicker moisturiser at night (can't beat Nivea or Astral blue pot)

Primers can also be drying (causing make up to "pill")

I really like Rimmel's Lasting finish. It's very silky and not drying. Works best if I start with exfoliating any dry skin with a hot cloth wash then moisturise and then prime. But I don't use actual primer, I use Nivea Q10 Pore refining cream which is a light moisturiser with a priming effect. Then pat on the Rimmel foundation with a damp sponge or fingers.
