Has anyone done a brow tint at home? Recommendations?

Can anyone recommend a good brow tint product? I almost look like I have no brows without makeup and need to have a go at them!!

I have always done mine at home (I have ginger hair and white brows and lashes, salons only have brown tint IME which makes me look like Alistair Darling).

I just use hair dye. Patch test first. I go a shade darker than my hair (it fades quickly). Bit of vaseline on a cotton bud so I don’t dye my skin. Mix about a 20p size blob of dye and developer on tinfoil (don’t mix the whole box of hair dye, you don’t need that much). Put it on my brows with the other end of the cotton bud. Wash off 30mins later.

You do always get a bit of skin staining, so do it at night so it has time to fade before you leave the house! Grin

One box of hair dye lasts forever. I tend to bin it after twelve months because I assume it goes off, but there is always plenty left in there.

I use the Revolution one, I use a brow brush - don't attempt to use the one you get with it, leave it on for a couple hours then peel it off. It DOES tint the skin too so you need to be careful

I use Refectocil. The dye comes in a tube and you need to mix it with the separate oxidant into a paste. I mix brown and black so that it goes a bit ashy. I use a very fine brush to apply it from the outer end first, brushing the hairs against the direction of growth. This is how I was taught to do it when I learned lash and brow tinting at a beauty class. It will prevent you from dyeing the skin. If you are not super steady with your hand, you can use a cotton bud dipped in vaseline to draw around the edge of your brow to protect it, although the dye comes off the skin really quickly I think. It's super easy, I would never pay for a salon brow tint.

I use refectocil too, think I probably saw it recommended on here. Never thought to use hair dye, might try that next time as find the brown refectocil slightly too dark.

It does dye the skin, but a good rub with a soapy flannel gets most of it off.

Don’t do what I did and fake tan straight afterwards - woke up with orange skin under my brows!

Another refectocil fan. I smear Vaseline around brows to avoid stray dye. Very easy to mix and apply.
It takes about 15 mins tops.

I find the lash / brow dyes fade very quickly. I thought about hair dye - it would last a long time quantity wise so might try that. I also saw recommended beard dye has staying power because it is formulated for coarse grey hair!

I use reflectocil after a recommendation on here and watching a couple of YouTube videos. It’s very good. To prevent skin dyeing I cover area around eyes with Vaseline. I used to have dark brown/ black eyebrows but now I am 53 I use “graphite” . No longer spending £20 a pop in a Salon , it costs pence to have good eyebrows now.

DukeOfEarlGrey · 10/04/2020 20:43

Where do you all buy the Rectofil? I’d also like to dye my own brows (and lashes) whilst salons are closed but their website looks like info only, not sales... is this because it’s a pro salon product?

helsybells · 10/04/2020 20:43

Amazing guys thanks so much for the brilliant tips and recommendations! Right I’m gonna get on it! I’ll probably end up a convert - might save me quite a few pennies going forward! Xx

Ebay for Refectocil.

DukeOfEarlGrey · 10/04/2020 21:41

Thanks @emsyjay37

I buy mine from Ebay- Strictly Professional Eyelash & Eyebrow Tint Dye Starter Kit All Colours.
It does not fade fast.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 10/04/2020 22:58

I also use Strictly Professional - brown for brows, blue/black for lashes. It’s the same stuff my brow lady uses in the salon.

Blueblackrose · 10/04/2020 23:10

Refectocil here too - you buy the dye, developer and little glass pot separately. The developer last ages so most of the time you just need to rebuy the dye. I use a clean old mascara brush to apply. Works a treat and saves a fortune in time and money.
