Touching up Hair Roots

I realise there may have been other recent posts on this in these hairdresser deprived times.

I have my hair professionally coloured - darkish honey blonde with a few highlights - and, inevitably, am now getting to stage where roots just starting to show. Not dark, which I wouldn't mind, but white/ grey.

I've seen various products around you paint on your roots to cope with this problem. Views, please, on whether they work and if so which are the best brands. Price not a problem as saving lots on my hairdresser. But do need to be very easy to use as I'm pretty cack-handed!
TIA.

Bumping - I know this is a boring question but some people must have experience of these ‘touch-up wands’?

Watching with interest, I'm exactly the same. I did text my hairdresser who told me not to do anything.

Ginsmything · 10/04/2020 11:53

I use L’Oreal Root Touch Up Spray. It’s wash out and comes in a variety of colours so will cover your greys without horrifying your hairdresser once you can go back and have it done professionally. HTH

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 10/04/2020 11:55

I am the same - have my hair coloured dark brown with highlights. My roots are already half an inch long so I have an inch-wide streak now and nothing artful will cover it up! My hair grows very quickly and a few days before a hairdresser appointment I use brown eye shadow in the parting which works OK. Not now though! My hairdresser has begged her clients not to use home hair dye as when we go back it will apparently be difficult to get rid of before putting the right stuff on! She has recommended L'Oreal Magic Root Cover-up - I have bought a couple of shades and actually intend to use one this afternoon as I need a passport photo taken and refuse to have one which shows my roots! Will report back!

Thanks!

Ok - I tried the golden brown colour. Never used it before and it has gone on a bit haphazardly but I don't think I have put enough on yet. Covers well and isn't sticky which was what I was afraid of so I think a bit of practice will crack it! The colour is good for me - I got the 'brown' one too so will try that next time. I think I would recommend it! Good Luck!

AngeloftheSnorth · 10/04/2020 16:44

I couldn’t get hold of the L’Oréal root touch up but I bought hairgenetics which is like old fashioned mascara which you paint on with a brush and it’s actually really good! I apply on dry hair after washing and it covers up my inch of roots until I wash it again.

I might use it in future and not get my roots done so often. I’m really pleased with it I got it from Amazon

Mine colour is dark brown with dark blonde highlights

RosesandIris · 10/04/2020 16:51

Don’t do what I did and put hair colour on all over. I used a packet which is had in the cupboard for about two years. My hair came out black. It looks awful, especially as my hair is light to mid brown with highlights normally. I tried to grow my hair out to its natural colour but lost my nerve.

browzingss · 10/04/2020 17:00

Has anyone tried the colour wow root cover up? Apparently it’s really good, it’s a powder rather than a spray so more precise and apparently it’s pigmented enough to lighten dark hair - so brown roots look blonde for example.

RosesandIris · 10/04/2020 17:28

I’ve used that and found it useless.

MabelMoo23 · 11/04/2020 21:16

Defo L’Oréal tough up spray. So good. Trick is though is not to spray too close to head, otherwise it looks matte and powdery . Spray it quite far from your head and the fine mist that settles does the job really well

I’ve also tried colour wow. It’s good, but it’s really expensive, and it’s not really much better than the spray, and it’s quite time consuming as well to work the brush through your roots

Elliemayclampett · 12/04/2020 11:37

I’ve just used this. Usually get my hair done at the salon. I’m pleased with the results on the grey

I use the same product too, as my main hair colour. It honestly works fine and blends with salon colour without issues.

princessTiasmum · 12/04/2020 15:11

I wouldn't touch Clairol root touch up,my hair started falling out after using that
Thought it would be ok, as i usually use Nice n Easy
Look on trust pilot

Lily193 · 12/04/2020 16:24

Colour Wow platinum is excellent on my light blonde hair with highlights along the part (very little grey though)

JemSynergy · 13/04/2020 21:05

My roots are getting quite bad now, I have highlights and my natural colour is very warm, 41 and no grey yet but touch up colours don't seem to take on my warm natural colour.

ViveLEntenteCordiale · 13/04/2020 23:13

Mine is naturally quite grey and I have it coloured at the hairdresser back to its original dark brown. My last hair appointment was the end of Jan and I can barely stand looking in the mirror Grin I have the L'Oréal spray but find it doesn't really stick to my hair and seems to go straight through to my scalp, which isn't a great look. Anyone else get this?

I have been experimenting with brown eyeshadow too, MilkTrayLimeBarrel and found it is better than nothing... though it just reduces the overall look of grey rather than covering them and I don't like the feel of it in my hair. So could be worth a try polyhymnia if you have a similar shade. Otherwise I used to use the Nice'n'easy root touch up but I haven't tried it recently since I've been getting greyer Shock

Am interested in the hairgenetics AngeloftheSnorth - what does it feel like once it's on, does it make your hair feel sticky or crunchy?

Sorry I have hijacked a bit polyhymnia Blush

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 14/04/2020 08:21

@Vivelententecordiale - I should have mentioned that my hair is grey/white too! With the spray, I know what you mean about it going straight to your scalp - try holding the can a bit further away and then it goes on more to the surface of the hair.

My new problem is that the area round my temples is now growing out - I look like a shocked scientist!! Maybe I should just embrace the grey but it's a bit difficult as my hair is half-way down my back!

ViveLEntenteCordiale · 14/04/2020 11:52

@MilkTrayLimeBarrel thanks, I’ll try holding the can further away. I have all the same problems as you - long hair and my temples seem to be the whitest bit!

Gingertam · 14/04/2020 11:59

I only ever get grey at my temples. I've used Clairol Root Touch-Up for a couple of years. I think it's brilliant. I just slap it on and it blends perfectly. Just get something for your roots not the whole head.

Coffeepot72 · 14/04/2020 12:16

I have been using Colour Wow powder in blonde to blur my roots, but this morning had a great success with Wella Colour Fresh, goes on like a shampoo, lasts about 10 washes and has covered 80% of my grey and really perked up the colour. This was recommended to me by my hairdresser.

RosesandIris · 14/04/2020 21:31

Just looked up Colour Fresh and it says it only covers up to 30 percent grey?

PrincessLouis · 14/04/2020 22:50

I use Colour Wow & find it easy & effective - parting easy, go easy on the temples & wear hair down when on Zoom Grin

Pleasebeafleabite · 14/04/2020 23:06

I have hair like you op possibly a bit darker. Last year my hairdresser was off for 2 months so in between I bought Olia light golden brown full box and applied on roots only.

Faded a bit by time my appt came round but crucially did not react with my scalp or impact my next colour.

Ive just done it again this week as couldn’t get past 6 weeks hopefully my hairdresser will be open in another six weeks so I only need to do it once.

In between I use a dark blonde root spray. They’re all similar I like phil smith best

Coffeepot72 · 15/04/2020 12:01

@RosesandIris yes my hairdresser also said 30% grey coverage with Wella Colour Fresh, but I left it on for 30 mins and it’s covered most of my grey/white. I have blonde highlights with evil white roots
