How long, oh Lord? A question of brassieres and their alternatives.

I've never been a big fan. From my earliest ill-fitting bralette, to the most recent poked out underwire, discomfort and distaste have been my constant companion where breasts are concerned. Don't get me wrong, they've had their share of love, but regarding garments it's mostly been a constant struggle.

My question is, can this really be the best we have to offer? I haven't been the most generous, I'll admit. I've never darkened the door of a Victoria's Secret, or gotten a professional sizing, but I've taken the measuring tape to myself and procured the appropriately underwired hardware. It may work for a time, but inevitably the item breaks down, or more likely, never functions properly in the first place. I'm loath to spend $60 (or more) on an item that is likely to break down in the next six months, just like the rest of them.

My second question is, has anyone tried a bustier? It may seem non sequitur, given my distaste for the standard bra, but the sloping, slumping nature of brassieres is what mostly bothers me. A support that relies on my natural waistline rather than straps or cinches might actually feel better. Dare I say shapewear?

Sigh. Please tell me that someone has experience enough with the options and alternatives to send me down the proper rabbit trail.
