Has anyone used one? Do they work? If so do they leave marks? My 12 yr old DD has terrible blackheads and had been looking at these online, would appreciate any advice on these machines or any other ideas. Thanks!

My DS successfully used one of those metal tools with a loop on the end, you just press against the skin and it forces the gunk outEnvyGrin

No I bought one for 11 yr old DD who has bad blackheads but it was useless. Wasn't cheap either!

Marion Keyes did a review on Instagram this week. I think she said it was 145 euros and no it didn’t work.

I'd avoid any kind of device or peel off strips for blackheads. They have been found to damage the skin and can lead to tears which you dont want for your teen skin.

The best thing to buy for blackheads is a salicylic acid toner. They are most effective at breaking down the oils gently.

Look at her whole skin routine too. Get her using a proper but gentle cleanser (non foaming), salicylic acid toner and a moisturiser. Treat the skin gently though, avoid anything harsh.

I would look at superdrug own brand, paula's choice and Sam Farmer ranges. Avoid L'oreal, clean and clear type stuff.
I personally have used CORSX BHA Blackhead Liquid - its more expensive but rated by skincare fanatics as its pretty gentle but will get rid of blackheads when used consistently.

Id think it would cause trauma to skin, check out james welsh on youtube for tips. Perhaps a chemical exfloliator?

jamrollyolly · 06/04/2020 22:38

Thanks everyone, I was worried that it could cause damage, but it's really helpful to have some other peoples expertise. I'll look into some of your suggestions with her. Thanks!

Treat it from the inside too. More veg and salads in her diet and get her to substitute fruits for sugary snacks and up her intake of water and encourage her to take a multi-vitamin with evening primrose oil.

RuffleCrow · 07/04/2020 16:19

I had one of these but binned it the other day. I don't think it really worked and having a powerful mini-hoover cms from my eyeballs seemed like a really bad idea, especially now.

Can’t recommend Khiel’s enough. After this lockdown is over, take her to a Khiel’s store and get them to test her skin and prescribe her a skincare routine. Nothing has ever worked for my skin before until someone told me about Khiel’s.

jamrollyolly · 08/04/2020 09:54

Ruffle, she eats a huge amount of fruit, (well before lock down) and eats her veg too. I'll try the vitamin with evening primrose oil though- that has already been recommended for those teen mood swings that make family life so interesting!
Being there's one of those near me, if we've a job or a business left after lockdown I'll take her in!

I second the metal tool. You can get them from Sally warehouses, don't know if they do online. I trained as a beautician in the 90's, and they were standard kit for us then, don't know if things have moved on. Just put them over the blackhead and press gently. If it doesn't work then resist the urge to apply more pressure. I also thinks the strips are bad. They also remove the little hairs on your skin, that have a purpose, although I can't remember what it is Grin

The other forgotten element is moisturising the skin. It seems to be counterintuitive to make the skin more oily but I've found its making a big difference. I like to use muslin cloths with a cleanser too as it seems to do a good job of getting rid of dirt & oil.
Without moisturiser, the pores appear enlarged.

I have seen people on YouTube with tiny hickey-like bruises from those blackhead vacuum cleaners. I wouldn’t risk it - especially if you are prone to redness or broken capillaries

Neutrogena blackhead eliminating scrub. Changed my life 😍🏆
