Thin hair

What can I do while we stay at home to thicken my baby fine hair? Until a few years ago I had lots of fine hair and during a stressful time lost a few patches and all of my volume. Since then my hair has grown back but it’s baby fine and won’t grown past my chin. I’ve got around this with extensions with a really trusted hairdresser. I’ve just had the extensions out and my hair is so fine. Is there anything I can do to nourish or thicken it at home in the mean time. Been looking at castor oil and regain.

I’ve heard good things about elasticizer.

LucyLatimer · 05/04/2020 09:52

It’s funny you should say that, I have some on right now..

I don't suppose that you dye it OP? If you do, I would urge you to stop. I coloured my hair until 3 years ago. It was fine and didn't look good past my chin. I now have a thick mop of hair which even hair stylists comment on.
I wish I had known this years ago. My grey is also really nice - pure silver highlights around my face and towards the front of my crown. Not what I expected when I was 'chasing the roots' dying them each month.

Yes I do have a full head of colour, like you say touched up regularly to stop the greys coming through so now is a good time to see where it goes. It doesn’t help that my hair hasn’t been cut for 2 years because of the extensions so it’s got no shape.

I have thin hair, I've actually found that having bleach blonde highlights at the hairdresser has made it slightly coarser & therefore seem thicker.
Also it was layered which was a mistake so I've grown out most of the layers.

I was anaemic & had to take prescription iron tablets.

Now my iron & ferritin levels are ok but to be on the safe side I take: 1 Holland & Barrett Gentle Iron 20mg capsule a day & 1 Perfectil skin, hair & nails tablet a day.
I also eat a bread roll filled with either sliced beef or salmon each day.
Since doing this I swear my hair has grown a bit thicker around my hairline.

I use Nexxus Emergencee shampoo & conditioner from Boots that doesn't contain sulphates.

Unfortunately I lost the hair at the front of my head in 2011 due to epilepsy meds & it's literally taken until now to get it to ear length at the front again.
I still have a very high hairline which is embarrassingly noticeable as I have to tie my hair up for work in a hospital.

Also I'm too scared to touch the colour until I can get back to the hairdresser.
The roots are naturally dark blonde with some white.

Good idea about vitamins. I take a wellwoman capsule daily. I wonder if a course of perfection might be good. Klorane does a quinine shampoo that I might try too

I have the same proble and I think taking an iron supplement is starting to make a difference (very slowly).

DianaT1969 · 05/04/2020 17:16

There's a Facebook group Grey&Proud where you will see a lot of people comment on how thick their hair became (with visible new growth) after ditching the dye. It's worth checking out. Very motivating.

The best thing for my fine hair is to leave it alone

No colour, no extensions, no product, just a wash and conditioner twice a week, leave it to sit dry

And leave it alone

Long term that’s the best approach imo

Once health and volume have returned, you can consider due etc again

Imo

I have very thin hair, and bare patches, Dermatologist said due to stress, but says it will grow back, but been like this for 18 months now,
Biotin is very good for hair, and apart from where my bare patches are has grown like weeds, also my nails have improved
I have been told that plantur 39 tonic helps with new hair growth so trying that now,the person who told me has seen new hair growth

LucyLatimer · 06/04/2020 08:14

It was a stressful time and taking antidepressants that made chunks of hair fall out a few years too. I cut it as it became really fine all over after the list bits grew back in and I’ve done everything to it since to make it look like it did. Now is certainly the time to grow it out and not do anything at all to try and regain its health, although I’m late 40’s so I think is likely to be hormonal too. I tried plantar a while back but it made my scalp really tight, wondering if the Klorane might be more gentle. Thanks for the advice

I have very thin hair but I have found the following suits me:

ditched the dye and gone grey, but its highlighted with different shades of grey to break it up

a Vitabiotics Hair Crush Gummie every day ( I cant swallow big tablets and all hair and nail tablets are huge! noticed a difference since I started taking these 6 months ago)

shampoo and condition with John Frieda Frizz Ease Weightless Wonder Shampoo ( better than any volumising shampoo)

L'Oreal Elnett Crème de Mousse Curls Strong - even though I don't have curly hair this holds volume in my hair when blow dried.

LucyLatimer · 06/04/2020 09:36

Embracing the grey sounds tempting, I have had the conversation about blending highlights in to the grey with my hairdresser but have so far kept the dark roots. I’ve been looking at that Facebook page and it’s so flattering on the skin for so many of those women. Thanks for the recomendations
