Face v Body

I think I've arrived at that time in life where I need to choose between maintaining the weight that I've always been but having a haggard face and having a decent(ish) face but putting on some weight.

Not sure why I'm posting this, just wanted to put it out there.

Anyone else have this dilemma?

(This is probably triggered by seeing myself on a lot of conference calls this week)

I’m possibly too young to understand, but I don’t think looking younger necessarily means more attractive.

Someone said having a double chin makes you look younger - frankly a double chin isn’t attractive, rather keep my defined jawline and chiselled cheeks any day over that.

I think some people are using this thread to throw sly digs at slimmer people 😂 if you’re naturally slim that’s perfectly fine, you’re not gaunt/skeletal/old as shit etc. You don’t need to gain weight, do what you’re comfortable with. Nor do I think losing weight ages people, if done healthily of course.

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 04/04/2020 22:44

If you keep the same weight for most of your life it isn't an issue. No stretching and shrinking over and over until you lose elasticity.

My practitioner SIL tells me this.

It's a bIG issue if you lose or gain 10 stone for example.

Shmithecat2 · 04/04/2020 22:49

@ineedsun

Lots of water to drink, and a good skin care routine - hyaluronic acid, rose water spritz, decent moisturizer. I'm fairly religious about it and very vain.

ineedsun · 04/04/2020 23:22

That acid thing sounds scary!

I haven't noticed any sly digs aimed at slimmer people. I haven't lost weight, have worked harder as I have got older to stay the same weight but what used to be good bone definition and a slim elegant neck is definitely moving towards something from a hammer horror film.

No, the HA is a humectant, draws moisture into your skin!

squishedgrapes · 05/04/2020 00:43

I have quite good bone structure, but look better with a half stone extra in my 50s, or so I've decided because to lose it and keep it off is more than I can be bothered with at the moment. It crept on accidentally, and one day I realised I looked less tired. So I'm keeping it and eatin chocolate

managedmis · 05/04/2020 01:28

I look a good 5/7 year older with a stone's weight on me. It all goes to my face. Ugh.

BilboBercow · 05/04/2020 01:54

I hate the whole "choosing between my face and ass" stuff.

Men aren't told this stuff.

ineedsun · 05/04/2020 07:54

No one has told me this. It's something I came up with by myself 😂

It's been around a long time. Surprised you haven't heard of it. It was also discussed in another thread earlier last week.

ineedsun · 05/04/2020 11:13

Perhaps it's just something that a few people have experienced and identify with as opposed to something that we are 'told' or have seen elsewhere. Obviously if I was aware there was another thread I wouldn't have started a new one. Maybe that person noticed that they looked horrible in conference calls too 🤷‍♀️

"I hate the whole "choosing between my face and ass" stuff.

Traditionally men didn't talk about beauty stuff as much. That's changing though. I don't think I was the only person to notice that Huw Edwards looked older when he lost weight so it happens, and is noticed, to men too.

Gwenhwyfar · 11/04/2020 13:19

"Don't get fat. You will be unhealthy and won't look younger."

It's not about getting fat, it's about some people realising that their face looks better at a weight that is not ideal (in the aesthetic sense) for their figures. There a range of at least two stones in the healthy weight for your height so people can choose a weight that is still healthy.
Obviously, nobody should intentionally be overweight or underweight.

Gwenhwyfar · 11/04/2020 13:25

"I think some people are using this thread to throw sly digs at slimmer people 😂"

That's not happening at all.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 11/04/2020 13:41

At an older age, a thin face usually comes with the kind of body that only looks good in clothes. Without them, it is painfilly underweight, with bones showing. Not attractive at all. Being size 8 at 25 and 45 are two very different things. I'd rather be fuller and more athletic (which I am).

Yikes, what a mean spirited thing to say.

RagDollies · 11/04/2020 13:48

I don't think this applies to everyone- definitely not to me. When I gain a bit of weight my face looks jowly and I get a double chin. My bone structure round my jaw isn't great and I think the excess weight looks worse. When I'm slimmer I've less jowls and my cheek bones look better. My face is naturally round though, and I've never dropped below healthy BMI so I don't think I'd ever look properly gaunt.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 11/04/2020 13:52

Ready why is it mean spirited? That's my personal observation of very slim older women on the run in their shorts and vests and in my gym locker room. It does not look very good and probably not too healthy either, they could do with putting on some weight.

I thought you meant 60+ when you said at an older age!
The difference between my size 8 body at 25 and 45 (in fact 35) was I'd had 2 children so had some wrinkly skin on my stomach area and I weighed about half a stone more. I still looked pretty good out of clothes!
It's the years after 45 heading towards menopause that had more of an effect on my body than the previous 25, before that I could eat whatever I wanted and still looked good even if I didnt do much exercise.

Gwenhwyfar · 11/04/2020 14:28

"My face is naturally round though, and I've never dropped below healthy BMI so I don't think I'd ever look properly gaunt."

Yes, I have chubby cheeks so I like the way that decreases as I age. It also means my face looks fat very easily so I look better at the lower side of the healthy range, whereas someone with a naturally thinner face might feel different as they age.

InfiniteSheldon · 11/04/2020 14:47

5 ft 6 and a small ten sometimes an 8 by hard exercise and monitoring my calorie intake naturally if I just leave it I'm a 14 probably bigger now Menopausal and follow SW and sit at the mid to top of a size 12 when I make a massive effort and get back towards my younger weight my face looks like shit. The older I get the less I really care though. I have regular facials take care in the sun but that bit of extra weight is the best thing I can do for my face. I'd choose my face over my body without hesitation.

lindyloo57 · 11/04/2020 19:05

I'm 5 foot 3 inch, a size 10 or 12, when younger was around 8st and a size 8, stayed at that weight till my mid 40s, it crept up to 9st around 50s, I will be 60 in August, I am still 9 stone, my face hasn't change to much with the weight gain, but it's the body, tummy could be smaller and I wish I was more toned,

NiteFlights · 11/04/2020 19:13

I’ve recently noticed that my face is starting to look rather muscular - I have a square face with good bone structure and it used to be quite plump even when I was thinner, which made me look younger. Now I am BMI 24-25 so I definitely don’t want to put on weight, but I think my face is losing all its fat!
