Socks that DON’T get holes in?!

Eachpeachtree · 30/03/2020 09:33

I’ve thrown out about five pairs in the last week...I love bamboo socks but haven’t found ones that last yet. I’m a SAHM so walking around in my socks all day, maybe this makes them wear out quicker?!
If anyone knows of the holy grail (socks that LAST), please please tell me where they are?!

@Feelingfestivenow, they are actually wool ones. DDIL likes the feel of them.

Feelingfestivenow · 01/04/2020 15:36

Well I have 2 pairs of socks on and said house slippers and my feet are like blocks of ice! Could do with some thick wool ones!!

Have to put the heating on now...

I bought some bamboo socks from seasalt ages ago. First time I wore them I came out in hives, second time same. Dare not try them again. The hives cover exactly where the socks are. So it's just a guess, but I think I'm allergic.

I've gone back to the 5 for a fiver in Asda. I do have some big thick hiker boot socks, but I get mighty warm with them on.
Any other suggestions? Loving the very colourful ones up thread.

Sainsbury's socks are excellent & hard wearing.

Marmaladegin · 02/04/2020 07:20

I bought grey school socks with wool in them for DDs, who flatly refuses to wear them Hmmso I ended up with them. Love them! Relatively cheap, cosy and so far long-lasting (I too have wood floor that eats nice wool socks).

if your feet get hot you won't like walking socks! Thought bamboo socks are good quality.

MerryDeath · 02/04/2020 07:27

and BAM agree also good quality. prob better than thought.

drspouse · 02/04/2020 07:34

@Bananabixfloof it might be the stiffener they put in the socks when they are new. Try washing them 5 or so times and wearing them again.

Eachpeachtree · 02/04/2020 07:52

@Shosha1 I can’t even darn, you make your entire family’s socks! I am in awe!

I don’t seem to have the aggressive big toe that PPs have thank goodness! Maybe just an aggressive sole in general! Or maybe it’s my laminate floors....

I love Thought socks as they’re so soft, but those are the pair that only lasted three months from Christmas, so I’m not sure they’re tough enough for me.

I’ve ordered some lightweight walking socks and some really thin (ie cheap) ballet flats for wearing in the house, hopefully that combo won’t be super warm?!

This is a minefield! It seems what works for one is useless for another, and so on! I think I will gradually work through all PP suggestions until I find the holy grail!

I'd also add Thought to the list. Gorgeous designs. I've got a few pairs and they don't seem to be going thin after more than a year. They also seem to stay soft and stretchy.

@Shosha1

Those are amazing! Where do you get the patterns and wool from? Please say it's online!,!,

grownup2 · 02/04/2020 16:54

If you want warm and cosy, these alpaca socks have really impressed me. They feel light and soft, don't get smelly and don't get holes (even with my also aggressive big toe). I put them in the machine on wool wash cycle and no shrinkage.

@Soontobe60 www.winwickmum.co.uk/2014/05/basic-sock-pattern-and-tutorial.html this is the one I use.

Shosha1 · 03/04/2020 07:38

@Soontobe60 Quick tip. If you have stitch markers. Put one in every ten rows. And then in the corner of each heel as you turn it. That way you dont get confused.

Leave all the markers in till you have finished both socks. It is easy to make sure you havnt made one longer than the other then.

I find if you count rows till the heel split 70 rows for men, 60 for women 40 for a 4 year old.
Then on the turn the sam from edge if heel.

Bananabixfloof · 03/04/2020 08:49

@drspouse cheers but I got rid, it was excruciating pain when I took them off, proper huge red hives. Took days to go down.
If I see another pair somewhere on sale I'll give it a bash after washing them several times. But I wouldn't deliberately go out of my way to buy more.
Am hoping alpaca may be ok

Would recommend Corrymoor Mohair socks. And they have this afternoon sent me a message offering 15% off for Easter, which is worth having. Anyone who wears walking boots, wellies or has cold feet will love them.
