Has this been asked ( sorry, couldn't find anything) - what are you doing with your acrylic nails as they grow out?

JesmondDene · 29/03/2020 13:45

Mine actually hurt as they begin to grow out, as the 'weight' i suppose is on my own nails
I did try at one time to remove them at home....it didn't work? What are you planning to do?

I ordered acetone and a cuticle tool from Amazon, I will attempt to remove them myself when the time comes.

I have watched a number of YouTube videos Grin

ShirleyPhallus · 29/03/2020 13:49

Order some acetone, file off the top coat, soak cotton wool in acetone, cover in foil for 20 mins and they should have flaked off

Do NOT pull them off or force them off the nails, let the acetone do the work

JesmondDene · 29/03/2020 13:58

Thanks, yes that is what I tried last time -filing/acetone/foil - when I couldn't get an appointment - most didn't budge at all.
Where they did - it was only because my own nail had snapped so low down underneath - so the acrylic and nail came away together. They were a mess.

I'm currently sat, trying to get mine off now! I ordered acetone and nail clips a few days ago from Amazon, it's taking a while, I'm having to soak and scrape in layers.

I was just trimming them but someone posted on an earlier thread that if they lift and moisture gets inbetween the nail and the acrylic its an infection risk.

Glitterb · 29/03/2020 17:42

If you can then trim the ends down, then file down and soak cotton wool in acetone then wrap in tin foil. Keep checking every 20 mins and scrap with a orange stick/file. You might need to out the foils back on and leave for another 20 mins. Unfortunately it doesn’t take a while depending on how thick the acrylic is. I have order a gel nail kit and will be just coping with gels for now. I probably have another 2 weeks out of these acrylics. Mine are exactly the same when they grow out but my nails are super thin anyway so they bend.

Sunshine1239 · 29/03/2020 22:18

I just went chemist and got bottle acetone and filled a bowl and held hands in for 20 min then just scrapped off easily

Sunshine1239 · 29/03/2020 22:19

The fouls are just a faff and take ages

In my local salon they always just use a bowl!

Sunshine1239 · 29/03/2020 22:19

Foils

JesmondDene · 30/03/2020 21:41

Is it possible that some acrylic won't come off? - I have tried all of the above and it just doesn't budge.

winterisstillcoming · 30/03/2020 21:45

It's quicker if you heat the
Acetone very slightly - like a Bain Marie. Not too hot or it disappears. Hold your fingers in it for 10
Mins then periodically scrape it off.

Grabbner · 31/03/2020 01:35

Are you sure the polish you’re using has acetone in it? Acetone should work, it’s what they use in salons.

DeadBod · 31/03/2020 16:57

My acrylic overlay is nude and I was due to get them redone just before the lockdown. I've filed them shorter and might just grow them out rather than try and remove it myself. I'm going to look a scruff but luckily, due to the natural colour, it's only going to be me that notices. I'm constantly oiling the regrowth area.

JesmondDene · 31/03/2020 20:17

Will have to have another try - warming the acetone might be something to try.
I think I have a secret fear that my super quick salon is actually using something other than acrylic....

OP posts:
winterisstillcoming · 31/03/2020 21:33

It could be the top coat maybe? Try filing it off then dissolving.

Glitterb · 01/04/2020 08:17

Do you go to a normal salon or a chinese nail bar?

I know chinese nail bars use a different type of acrylic and it is really hard to get off. You will need to file down the top layer and keep soaking and soaking. My friend is a beautician and it took her nearly 3 hours to get them off someones nails once! Good luck!

JesmondDene · 01/04/2020 19:17

Ohhh! - Glitterb - yes a chinese nail bar - might need to set aside a long nail removal session.

VodselForDinner · 01/04/2020 19:20

I used my battery-operated hard skin remover/foot file thingy to take off as much polish and acrylic as I could. Then acetone bath for the rest.

Glitterb · 01/04/2020 20:18

@JesmondDene yeah sorry! I can’t remember the name of the acrylic they use but it is like cement, that’s why they usually last so long!

brighterdays2 · 01/04/2020 22:45

Just did mine!

So you need either a really heavy duty nail clipper or a special acrylic cutter like this one. Clip off the lengths. Then file down as much of the acrylic as you can with a nail file. After that I soaked some cotton pads in nail polish remover, wrapped them around my nails and clamped them in place with these but tin foil also works. Left them for about an hour and peeled the remnants off (the acrylic should go soft-ish). Took a while but now my nails can breathe!

Deathraystare · 02/04/2020 08:15

A lady was on This Morning (Yesterday!) talking about nails in general but mentioned gel nails.

TruffleShuffles · 02/04/2020 09:00

You haven’t got hard gel nails instead of acrylic have you OP? That doesn’t come off with acetone, it has to be filed down.

velocitygirl7 · 02/04/2020 09:19

Op, maybe read up about how awful those nail bars are. The staff are dreadfully exploited and the products they use, well I wouldn't want them near my skin!

If you went to a reputable salon they would be offering you free advice during lockdown. My cousin is a nail technician and she has been dropping of small kits to her regular clients to help them safely remove their nails.

PatricianOfAnkhMorpork · 02/04/2020 10:20

I’m about to soak off my acrylics and be naked for the first time in years.

Can anyone recommend a good nail strengthener as I know they are going to be weak? I need to be able to get it in either Tesco or Boots.

Thanks

Checkyspeck · 02/04/2020 10:28

I’ve ordered OPI nail envy-weak and thin(I think it’s called) from Just My Look(free uk delivery). I’m a nail technician and swear by this stuff. I’ve got my basic acrylic kit at home but can’t be bothered to put a new set on yet.

Mischance · 02/04/2020 10:36

Makes sense to try and remove them - the safest thing in these crazy times is to cut nails very short so that hand-washing is more effective in eliminating virus or any other bugs.
