What’s the best way to straighten your hair these days? If you’re lazy.

I’m a naturally wavy/ light curly girl. It’s quite big and though I kind of like it, it’s certainly not what you’d call smart. It’s a bit wild.

So with a new, somewhat grown up job on the horizon, I’m thinking it’s time to go straight again. I kept it straight for years using GHDs. Which are effective but IME make it a bit too flat - I like a bit of body left in.

I don’t mind throwing a few quid at it but I am lazy/ busy and definitely can’t be arsed with the big fat round brush thing. So: how does a lazy person with just below shoulder length hair dry it straight with somebody left in, in the shortest time possible?

What products and tools do I need?

Some body left in. Not somebody. My natural hair is wild but I don’t want to find actual people in it.

How about the ghd glide? It's a hot brush which tames and smooths. But won't leave your hair poker straight like the styler would.
It's very good. www.ghdhair.com/hot-brush/glide

I use the steampod 3 on the lowest setting and I still have some volume. If I want super straight hair I increase the temperature.

Lo-tech - wear a tight hat on my head after washing to flatten it. Takes a while to dry though.

Girlintheframe · 26/03/2020 16:48

The cloud 9 original are good. Temperature control so if you don't want it poker straight you could use a lower temp

@NeedToKnow101 - I do the same! Mine is a cheap straw hat but I do also run the hairdryer over it as well to speed things along!

NeedToKnow101 · 26/03/2020 18:15

@ElaineMarieBenes - a straw hat? Is it smooth enough?
I'm even more low tech than you, as I rarely use the hairdryer but hurry it along with fresh air on my walk to work. 😂

The heated big fat round brush thing is the laziest way to get my curly hair straight with body. I use the Revlon one-step, I find it easier and quicker than straighteners.

Raffathebear · 26/03/2020 18:47

Revlon 1 step vollumizer

@NeedToKnow101 - actually it’s a small Panama hat, so it’s made of paper and perfect!

I think we need to get out of the idea that straight hair is “grown up” and curly or wavy hair isn’t.

I kind of get it as I feel more polished with straight hair but I work in a senior professional role and don’t see wearing my hair curly (as I do most days) undermines that in any way. You can have tidy and lovely hair without it being straight...

That being said, if you don’t like flat hair (I don’t either) I’d recommend one if the big hair / rotating hair brush dryer tools. I have a remmington one that is fantastic and it gives me a smooth salon blow dry with movement. You can then straighten it from mid lengths to end if you like straighter and a bit more sleek or leave it how it is and it looks like a glam salon blow dry with lots of movement and volume.

Totally agree with pp that curly hair can be professional and lovely Smile However, a good way to straighten but keep body in it, is to straighten it as normal (blow dry or straighteners, depending how stubborn your hair is!) then put in two loose-ish french plaits, one on each side of your head. Sleep, wake up, take out the hairbands and give your head a shake. Shiny neat waves!

imausernamenotanumber · 26/03/2020 21:19

Sorry - I agree that curly or wavy hair isn’t inherently child-like. Sorry, certainly didn’t mean to offend anyone. Curly hair can be beautiful and certainly look professional. My curly hair, on the other hand, looks nice about one day in ten and the rest of the time I look like the evil witch of Azkaban.

Op we must share the same hair! Looks bearable for 12 hours, then slowly expands to fill whichever room I’m in, so I totally understand your pain and I’m in no way offended Grin I’ve spent so much time straightening it though that curly looks odd and “big” on me, so I’m trying to reprogram myself to appreciate the curls. I hope you find a method that works (I was really impressed by the plaits even if it did take me about a week of watching hair videos on YouTube to master it!)

imausernamenotanumber · 27/03/2020 06:23

I will try the plaits...although I have zero confidence that I’ll be able to do a French plait.
