Cutting my own hair

Hi all, hope everyone's doing ok! I last had my hair cut in August, so already massively overdue a cut. I was due to have it cut this week to get rid of the split ends but I'm obviously now isolating.

There are a few YouTube instructional videos, but does anyone recommend any one in particular for a very much beginner? My husband has said he'll give it a go, but he's never done it before and it's definitely not his forte!

I have long hair, which used to be a bit layered but they've all grown out now.

Thanks in advance Smile

I'd leave it. You could tie it back or pin it up.

I cut mine. I can't do the one where you tie it in a pony tail and do one snip because I have too much hair, so I put mine into two and cut each side and then even it up. Like this video:

I trimmed mine last week, it had just started to split and leaving it longer would mean losing a lot of inches by the time I can see a hairdresser. Do use hairdressers scissors others aren't sharp enough and apparently lead to more hair damage. I bought a pair from Jaguar (not the car brand) from Amazon. I used this tutorial from an actual hairdresser and she pretty much has the same hair style and I snipped off a centimetre with great results. The dusting was too much effort with hand mirror coordination so I gave up on that bit, I don't really feel that's necessary anyhow.

If your hair is long enough do the unicorn 💇‍♀️ haircut on YouTube.
It is simple and effective.
There are different variations to get more layers!😁

Don't worry. If your hair is long enough, just have an experiment. Do use hairdressers scissors others aren't sharp enough and apparently lead to more hair damage. There are so many different variations to get more layers:)

I cut my own hair but it's curly so if I mess up you can't really notice that much. I also cut my own fringe in, pretty much a success!

If you really want to do it I would recommend you take it slow and steady... There's something very addictive about giving yourself a haircut!

I don't have any recommendations I'm afraid as I'm the kind of idiot person that just dives straight in but like pp have said there are lots of tutorials out there. Find someone who has hair similar to yours.

Also seconding the hairdressing scissors - if your husband or anyone has a set of clippers, they often come with a pair of hairdressing scissors.

Ha ha I just cut my hair this morning, using the MN method. It looks ok - bit choppy on one side as I forgot to centre the ponytail over my parting and had to 'manually' correct that. But honestly no one's going to see me for the next three weeks so it'll grow out a bit Grin

I have cut mine before a few yrs ago, from just passed shoulder length to about bob length. I did it by putting it in a low, loose ponytail & cutting just below the hair band, there was a you tube video I copied. DH then tided up the back, making sure it was straight. It was roughly all one length so easier.

I was a bit younger and braver then! Now, I’m just a bit cack-handed, even dying my hair I’m getting useless at! For split ends I just twist sections of my hair & snip off bits that stick out, only short ends though, as I’m growing my hair now.

Think this is the video I watched

I didn’t bother with the clippers at the end.
