Is it worth paying more for foundation?

Just wondering if you think its worth splashing out for a more high end foundation or are drug store brands as good?

I've spent probably hundreds on crappy cheap foundations over the years. None of them have looked good or they've messed up my skin.
Then I found bare minerals. I'd say it's mid-range. About £27 for a pot of powder foundation, but it lasts ages! And it mostly keeps my eczema at bay- having been working at home for a week and not wearing any makeup my skin is getting bad again!

LambriniSocialist · 24/03/2020 23:25

Having spent a lot over the years on foundation and finally finding my holy grail in the £2.50 Primark squeezy bottle, I would say the answer is... No. Smile

violetbunny · 25/03/2020 00:50

I generally think the answer is yes but there are exceptions. Spending more doesn't guarantee it will be better, but on the whole my favourites tend to be at the higher end of the price spectrum. Beauty is my hobby and I have a pretty vast array of options.

What's generally more important than price is finding one that is an appropriate match in terms of colour, coverage, texture and longevity. I have oily skin and even the most luxurious dewy foundation just isn't going to work for me because it'll slide off my face by lunchtime. Everyone is different so first and foremost consider your skin type and unique needs before you think about how much to spend.

jalopy · 25/03/2020 07:12

Agree with above.
Depends on your skin. Cheaper alternatives slid off my skin within a couple of hours. Either that or they are patchy.
Estée Lauder double wear is worth the extra money. Although it's for med/heavy coverage, I'm careful with how much I apply.
Well worth the extra cost.

I too have tried a lot of foundations, from incredibly expensive to not so much. I currently use Beauty Pie Great skin, it's amazing. You can buy a pack of testers first to get the right shade. You only need very little and it lasts all day.

Deathraystare · 25/03/2020 09:38

I have had some high end and some very cheap. Some of the expensive ones were not that great. I am currently trying out the IT CC cream which is fine. I also have a primark one which I must try again. Hell knows I have plenty of time to try out all my foundations again (bit of a hoarder - but not with food she says quickly"!!)

veryveryquietly · 25/03/2020 10:44

There are some really high-quality inexpensive foundations and some piss-poor expensive foundations. I'd say if it's an excellent match and it works for your skin and lifestyle and it's not putting you into debt, it's worth it to pay whatever it takes. Especially if your skin tone is a difficult one to match.

Also, it's easy to spend more buying a few poor matches from the drugstore than getting testers of several expensive ones and then buying the one that works for you.

But it's kind of hard to get testers of expensive ones right now, since we can't go to the counters!

Inappropriatefemale · 27/03/2020 12:49

I think yes is the answer, I spend anywhere from £20 to £40 on foundation and less money on the other items, you are what you wear, well I think so anyway.Grin

ThinkPink71 · 27/03/2020 13:06

I also think yes... depending on your skin...i dont have particularly bad skin...just skin that some foundations dont like. I would recommend Armani Powder Fabric or Estee Lauder Double Wear heavier coverage.

This is coming from someone who has little interest in make up and I would still recommend paying extra....with the two above you dont have to use as much either so therefore lasts longer :)

Ifonlywecouldwishuponastar · 27/03/2020 15:28

I've spent loads too Over the years. I've finally found one I'm happy with. It's can't stop won't stop by nyx. The concealer is good for dark circles too.Wink

Mumof31981 · 27/03/2020 18:06

I think it depends on your skin and how you apply the foundation. I wear Estee Lauder double wear but apply with a damp beauty blender, for my skin that works amazing. I do like the bourjois foundations as a cheaper alternative but now they aren't sold or as readily available anymore I need to find a cheaper brand as a back up! I only spend alot of money on foundation, primer, concealer and powder, everything else is whatever I fancy the look of in superdrug!

user1493413286 · 27/03/2020 18:10

I think so; I wore an £8 one for years then started wearing Clinique and would never go back. My skin is much better, it stays on better and looks 100 times better.

I wish I’d got back the £100s possibly £1000s I’ve spent over the years in expensive foundations

Me too.

I'm particularly bitter about Double Wear to be honest.

30 odd quid to feel like I'm applying Cuprinol to my face and to look like an actual corpse in photos.

Sad
Pentium85 · 27/03/2020 18:56

Yes. Most the other parts of my make up are cheap store stuff, but I will always for out for Double Wear foundation

citygirl1961 · 27/03/2020 20:03

Thanks for your replies.

Which Clinique and No7 foundations do you use? I like Clinique foundation but I like their eyeliner and lipstick aswell and feel buying all of them may be too much?

Do you spend a lot on skincare too?

Pentium85 · 27/03/2020 20:06

As for skincare, not a penny! I find the best job is done by a flannel and warm water.

suze28 · 27/03/2020 20:22

I honestly believe the quality of my Bobbi Brown foundation is excellent. The finish it leaves is just lovely.

Inappropriatefemale · 27/03/2020 20:47

When it comes to eyeliner then I am happy with Rimmel kohl pencils, I think it’s wasting money paying a fortune for those.

DieCryHate · 27/03/2020 20:48

I used to think only the expensive ones were good however I'm now converted to Phoera, it was £3.50 a pop and it's absolutely fantastic. Beats my estée Lauder and Armani luminous silk hands down.

squishedgrapes · 28/03/2020 00:06

I always get on better with more expensive foundations. I used to wear Almaty in my younger years, and then one day went to a Bobbi Brown counter and have always bought the same brand. I tried others, even other expensive brands but it is always a waste of money

pinkrocker · 28/03/2020 00:15

I saw a lovely Stila spray one advertised that I liked the look and result of. ( you spray onto your brush then buff it in) It is £24 on Amazon which is quite terrifyingly high. Considering I usually wear No7 powder foundation for £7!

frustratedashell · 28/03/2020 00:20

A while ago my mum asked me to get her some Dior foundation. She reimbursed me but I nearly fell over when the sales assistant said it was £65!! My daughter said is it gold?!
