Retail casualties of coronavirus

Laura Ashley and Duo Boots have fallen this week.

How many other retailers will go before the end of this virus?

Carphone Warehouse is struggling I think. My daughter’s boyfriend works there part time.

Sad about Laura Ashley but haven’t bought from there in years, there isn’t one near me.

browzingss · 20/03/2020 23:19

Jesus Christ - Topshop/Arcadia group has laid off ALL staff (across every function, inc senior management). I used to work for them years ago and I feel so sorry for the staff. They were informed suddenly earlier today. They are only guaranteed a month’s full pay. Phillip green has completely fucked them over.

MushroomTree · 20/03/2020 23:25

Bloody hell @browzingss. I think the world is going to look like a very different place when all of this is over.

GulliBelle · 20/03/2020 23:26

Just when I think Philip Green can't be even more of a cunt, he proves me wrong.

banivani · 20/03/2020 23:27

The supermarkets might survive since they sell food. All clothes will be from Tesco and Sainsbury’s. For you. The only supermarket in Sweden that sells clothes is Ica Maxi and they make Tesco’s selection look like Givenchy.

TatteredOwl · 20/03/2020 23:39

'The supermarkets might survive'

Has to be the daftest comment so far

Gemma2019 · 21/03/2020 00:03

I thought Carphone Warehouse announced that they were closing all their shops and just keeping the stands inside PC World? That was only a few days ago. It's all very sad.

Notredamn · 21/03/2020 22:17

The big Topshop in our town slashed prices and closed down just over a week ago, Arcadia group has been doing badly for a while. PG is odious though!
Topshop still online, offering free delivery and discounts.

PersonaNonGarter · 22/03/2020 08:25

Who is buying though?

Surely most clothing purchases are driven by events: weddings, parties, wanting to look professional at the meeting so needing to smarten up etc...

Most of us could go a long time in our current wardrobe if no-one is going to see us.

Mind you, I am getting quite fat so may have to by some more elastic area waist stuff...Grin

PrimeraVez · 23/03/2020 08:39

To be honest, I’ve deliberately not placed orders with retailers such as ASOS in the last few weeks because I don’t want to put their staff at risk ie creating demand that means they are forced to keep going into the office/warehouse.

Now wondering if that’s the right thing to do.

TheChampagneGalop · 23/03/2020 11:48

Why Tattered, why so rude?

Persona This really shows how much clothing is bought for social reasons (even if it's just "I want to look on-trend when seen in public") and how little we actually need if we don't meet others like usual.
Who will survive this? The shops providing us with the best basic clothing, underwear, shoes that people need regardless.
The losers will be those selling things like uncomfortable trendy shoes, false eye-lashes and scratchy lingerie.

Astrabees · 23/03/2020 13:22

I won't tell you the name but my son designs for a high end brand that specialises in work wear and event dresses, there are redundancies going on as I write. I'm also getting lots of discount offers and I just don't feel like buying clothes at the moment because of all the uncertainty about everything. I hope my favourite brands survive but i fear they won't.

PersonaNonGarter · 23/03/2020 14:59

Astra - so hoping that isn’t Goat or Erdem...

SuckingDieselFella · 23/03/2020 16:23

Cath Kidston has gone into administration but they are looking for a buyer.

I've just placed an online order with White Stuff for some leisure wear as I barely have any. I almost never shop online for clothes so this is new territory for me.

Same as other pp I'm now wondering if that's an irresponsible thing to do? I thought it might be good to buoy up businesses during this time?

SuckingDieselFella · 23/03/2020 18:12

I'm on White Stuff mailing list. They've closed their shops but still operating online as normal.

If a retailer's shops are closed it doesn't mean they've gone bust!

OP posts:
Puppywithattitude · 23/03/2020 18:14

Surprised about Asos.
Supermarkets might survive ..lol

Richlyfruited · 23/03/2020 18:25

No I didn't think WS had gone bust - am more thinking about preventing any more retail casualties by buying online instead!

typicallyatypical · 24/03/2020 08:23

If you haven't already for previous reasons, please, please can we all boycott Sports Direct for Mike Ashleys decision to try and stay open throughout this crisis? I very much doubt he will given the backlash and the fact the shops aren't selling essential, but the fact he even tried. I very much doubt he will pay his staff for the closure, as they are mostly zero hours contracts, but I hope they can at least try and claim benefits and be safe.

Almost all the staff at my local one are young and from abroad so the fact they must already be away from their families must be tough enough.

thebabessavedme · 24/03/2020 08:57

I think some shops will now go to wall sooner than they would have done and frankly I think some deserve to, Debenhams for example have been struggling for ages but have never upped their game, its been the same old rubbish for years just more expensive, Kath Kidston has simply been a one trick pony and not figured out that fashions change, WH Smith is just a shithole and has been for years.

I think the high street will look very different, hopefully with a lot more small independent shops offering a wider choice, I also think the public will be more open to using independent shops because we have just been reminded how important our smaller corner shops/grocers/butchers etc are.

woodhill · 24/03/2020 09:06

Sad about LA. Could you still buy online? The home stuff is lovely. Particularly bedding. Always shopped there.

Clothes quality hit and miss though

Wonder if some brands will be in other department stores like Principles did?

MikeUniformMike · 24/03/2020 20:33

The high streets will be empty shops, charity shops, pound shops and bookies, with coffee shops and diner type places.

Clothes will be in retail parks and supermarkets.

DianaT1969 · 24/03/2020 20:49

I'm not convinced there will be more independent stores. Apart from food stores, entrepreneurs who opened other types of shops are probably really hurting now. Particularly sole traders with no employees.

Paperthin · 25/03/2020 17:22

Also Pets At Home issued staff with a lawyer letter telling them that they had to go to work as Key Workers. I’m not sure they are designated as such at all - although we all have to feed pets food can be found in supermarkets . But their staff who are carers getting a lawyers letter is terrible .
