No wrinkles at 42?

I'm 42 and have what I think are quite a normal amount of lines and ageing for my age. Lines around eyes, eyes getting a bit baggy and saggy, some lining around mouth area and a crease between my brows. My skin texture is still nice except on my forehead. My hands are also wrinkley.

A friend of mine is also 42, no wrinkles at all. Her undereye area is better than mine was at 26. Her skin is thick, firm smooth and plump. Honestly she looks to be in her mid 20s. I've asked her about her skincare and she says she has used prescription retin a for 20 years now, sunscreen everyday most if her life also vitamin C serums for 17 years, even diying her own before you could easily buy them. She also has never smoked, sun bathed or drank alcohol.

Shes not had anything "done" and I'm very familiar with fillers and botox myself and they don't give you a result like that.

So my question is this, if I start following her regimen now whole we're all on lockdown and I can hide my flakey skin etc then emerge looking 28 in 3 months time or would I have to have started 20 years ago to have the results she has?

I have skin like this, I'm almost 40 and people are shocked to hear it. I've sunbathed, smoked, drank and have a minimal skincare regime. I think it's genetics, my mum looks much younger than she is too, although my younger dsis missed out, always being mistaken for my older sister!

damnthatanxiety · 26/03/2020 15:42

I wish people saying 'i have no wrinkles at 60 or 70 actually posted a picture (could easily photograph side of face cutting off nose/chin etc from the photo to make it non outing) but strangely, no one does. Hmm

damnthatanxiety · 26/03/2020 15:43

lambro with all due respect, you are in your 30s. Many people have excellent skin in their 30s. Pigmentation and sun damage wrinkles appear in your 50s, many years after the damage was done.

aliphil · 27/03/2020 18:09

I think it's genes/luck. I'm 43 with good skin and no wrinkles, and I don't use any products on it except sunscreen in summer.

Ffsseriously · 27/03/2020 19:14

I always pretend to be shocked when people tell me their age, i never am though i am being polite.

MacBlank · 27/03/2020 20:38

This is me at 50, excuse the bags! (I don't sleep well due to health n meds)

I'm pretty much wrinkle and grey free.

If you follow my routine, I can't guarantee the same results....
Smoke 30 a day, no moisturizer, no skin care regime at all, only exfoliate twice a year, squeeze my spots (hehehe) don't drink much alcohol.

Do this and you'll look fifty too! lol

Dont ever have skin envy. Genes, childhood, lifestyle, amount of sun exposure all aff ft our skin.

Some are lucky, and don't wrinkle (a friend said years ago... Don't get wrinkles on a balloon!) And some start to wrinkle early.

They're not old wrinkles, they're stories!
Enjoy the stories your face tells 😜

I in my 50s, I have high cheekbones, some forehead lines that I've had since my 30s, a few smile crinkles, and I don't look great when I look down. But I love my face. I think I look fucking fantastic as I age
I look my age and I'm pleased about it

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 28/03/2020 02:43

Gain weight, the fat puffs out the wrinkles. Works for me.

Seriously though I think it’s a combo of genetics and sun protection.

not really joking

CHATTERBOXER · 28/03/2020 13:26

Too late!

Shazza88 · 28/03/2020 14:24

Hi how boring !!! If I was you I would just enjoy what you want it is all about family genes in any case .. I am 48 but people say I look 35 I used to smoke I drink wine everyday , love the sun and do not always moisturize as routine ,my mother the same as her mother have always had lovely youthful skin it's genes !!! Enjoy your life ...😉😉

damnthatanxiety · 29/03/2020 19:57

Shazza88 if you think sun, smoking and other lifestyle is not relevant and it's all genetic, just take a wee look at twin studies. You will be horrified at his wrong you are!!

Meeeh · 05/04/2020 23:19

She’s on some sort of prescription so you can’t do the same. I’d say you should invest in good skin care that suits you and not copy anyone else. So find nice serums and creams that work for you. I’m late 40s too and loving pixie vitamin c serum.
Your hormones are changing so make sure you cut sugar and bad fats and get on the avocado, fatty fish, an egg, olive oil etc and drink lots of water. I bet you that a lot of your “fine lines” are just dehydration.
Finally, do what’s right for you. My divorce left me with permanent worry wrinkles so I got them botoxed. Helped me recover my confidence massively.

You do you.

shinynewapple2020 · 07/04/2020 14:56

It's quite possible that your friend's good skin is caused by genetics - and also possible that the menopause will age her 10 years overnight (looks in mirror...,..,,)

emsyj37 · 07/04/2020 18:59

You can get prescription strength tretinoin (the active ingredient in Retin-A) quite easily through Dermatica, or through any other private dermatologist. I have used Differin for years but wanted to switch to tretinoin for the desperately needed anti- ageing effect (the anti-aging benefits of Diiferin/adapalene are not as proven as those of tretinoin) - the lockdown has been my opportunity to start with it and not worry about any peeling!

Did you get your products OP and what did you go for?? I turned 40 last year and feel like I'm ageing really fast now Sad.

Oldraver · 07/04/2020 19:42

I'm 54 and dont have any wrinkles, my forhead has no lines no it isnt botoxed

Ive never botherd with make up much or products, and have never really used mousterizer. I am extremly reactive to almost everything even my exzema cream (though it is oil based). The only thing I have used recently as my skin had been getting dry is a beeswax/olive oil face balm. It doesn't make me react

That said, I wouldn't say I had good skin, its patchy and I get redness.

No wrinkles though

PerfidiousAlbion · 08/04/2020 21:54

I do t care about the wrinkles, it’s the sagging cheeks and neck that get me. My face has gone from heart shaped to oblong in the space of 10 years. I feel a facelift looming!

Devilinatwinset · 17/04/2020 12:39

For those of you who use sunscreen religiously, which type/brand do you use?
I've had an on/off relationship with it since my twenties (I mostly avoid the sun) but I HATE the stuff. It's greasy, sticky, full of nasty chemicals. The more natural stuff that provides a physical as opposed to chemical barrier is white & chalky.
I would like to start using sunscreen more consistently, especially since I've started using hyaluronic acid serum.
Any suggestions / recommendations?

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/04/2020 14:05

I’m using ultrasun mineral for face spf50. It’s very white BUT if the rest of you is tanned I use a normal face powder but in a dark skin shade it’s easy to colour match. Otherwise I just use normal translucent powder.

I tried a mineral powder sunblock similar to what kanebo launched 30 years ago but I got a reaction to it. I have several allergies inc nickel so possibly there was something in it my body didn’t like.

userabcname · 17/04/2020 14:16

My mum is in her early 50s and her skin looks great! She has a very hands-off approach to skincare (she thinks the beauty industry is a con) and says the best thing you can do is avoid the sun. She was born and lived in a hot country for 28 years but never ever sunbathed and wears sunglasses all year round (yes, even in winter in England), mainly because it gives her a headache to squint, but she claims is also the reason the skin around her eyes has remained smooth. She's also never smoked and nor does she drink which I think helps a lot - I'm early 30s and it's definitely my smoking friends who've aged worst!
