Best home hair dye for blonde highlighted hair?

DennisReynoldsDuster · 17/03/2020 14:11

Seems mad to be thinking about this during these troubled times but I was wondering if anyone could recommend a hair kit or hair dye kit for at home to replace getting hair done at hair dressers?

I'm thinking the same. I really don't want to go to my appointment on Thursday. I have highlights which are fine I just need a darker root tint to touch up my greys. I'll be following in the hope a hairdresser comes along with a suggestionSmile

I'm following this

Well now is the time to find out.
You can hide for a week if it goes Orange Grin

The biggest hairdressing chain in Ireland has closed till the end of March at least because of the Coronavirus

EverydayLife · 17/03/2020 15:59

You can get a highlighting kit (Wella do one) with an old-fashioned cap and hook. It is simple to use. I do it occasionally on my parting when I can’t get to the hairdressers. Only about £6.

DennisReynoldsDuster · 17/03/2020 16:00

Interesting thanks

Very true @TheQueef Grin

Oh be very careful with the cap... you can end up with little patches... also it hurts 😂

EverydayLife · 17/03/2020 16:10

Yes only use it if you’re desperate and not over the whole head.

TheDogsMother · 17/03/2020 16:38

Hmmm I know what you mean. It does seem trivial at this time but I am going to have to tackle the roots myself or I dread to think who will emerge from my house after this isolation. I've been looking at YouTube tutorials Grin

granadagirl · 17/03/2020 16:45

I went to hairdresser last week, as needed roots doing
I asked hairdresser why hair colour never comes the same as on home hair dye
She said because it’s for people who have virgin hair ( never been coloured before)

Also I think colour will change your highlights
Colour
I’ve dyed mine at home numerous times, never ever got the colour I’m happy with 😟🤭
Kept thinking I’ve chose the wrong one!

Only ever been happy with colour when I’ve had highlights

MutteringDarkly · 17/03/2020 17:12

I used to have that complicated three different shades of highlights going on...then I became a single parent and kissed goodbye to ever having 3 hours free again when I wasn't supposed to be working Grin

I use garnier nutrisse box dye, a shade or two darker blonde than I "think" and I get a nice result. It's been about six years now and happily I've been able to get my hair cut fairly regularly but have stuck with the home dye as it's so much faster and I like it.

lindyloo57 · 18/03/2020 17:05

I have been using the wella highlighter kit for twenty years in between going to the salon, the only thing is the last couple of times I have used it, it doesn't seem to lift to a ashy shade it used to, its seems to be a bit golden.

amiapropermum · 20/03/2020 06:33

I posted this on another thread:

haven't been able to get to a salon since before Christmas (single mum and very clingy toddler) but I got a custom blend dye to apply at home from a company called esalon. I did have my colour formula from my hair dresser which helped a lot, but you upload a pic of yourself plus choose from colour charts and can chat to/call a colourist. I've used it twice now and am really pleased. My grays were very obvious and didn't grow out in a nice way.

LellyMcKelly · 20/03/2020 18:41

I stopped dyeing my hair last year after an operation and I wish I’d done it years ago. The hair so coming through so much softer and smoother. I’ve got a white streak at the front which is quite dramatic and glamorous. I’m not saying you should grow it out, but why not give your hair a rest for a few months and see how you feel. If you like it just think how much money and time you’ll save from not having to go to the salon all the time.

RUOKHon · 20/03/2020 18:42

Boris??

BIWI · 20/03/2020 19:09

Glad to see this! I have a hair appointment next week, which obviously I'm not going to. But my grey really needs dealing with! I've never, ever done it myself. I usually have 3 different colours put through in foils and then a permanent colour brushed through the rest of the hair.

How would I replace this with a box dye? And how do box dyes work? What do you actually do?!

WokClock · 21/03/2020 11:06

I have the same question - my hair is highlighted so I don’t just want to cover the grey roots with one colour

amiapropermum · 21/03/2020 11:22

On the esalon website you can choose from options to say you have highlighted hair and you'll get advice from a colourist.

My colour is a sort of red-gold mix that I can't get in a box dye and I was afraid to try it anyway! It turned my hair almost brown years ago

WokClock · 21/03/2020 11:29

Thank you, I have just realised as well that no one is going to see my roots apart from dh and the kids!

LambriniSocialist · 21/03/2020 11:36

Don't use a home bleaching/highlighting kit - the bleach won't be strong enough or the right developer etc and will come out orange (bitter experience!). I think your best bet is to get on YouTube and then Sally's and get some salon grade stuff delivered and go from there.

If you want to cover greys in a dark root then Loreal Majirel should do the job. You buy the colour and developer separately and mix them, it's not as intimidating as it sounds! Look up 'Majirel' on here, there are loads of threads. I also use loreal dialight for my toner for my bleached hair if anyone needs a good toner.

I think there is going to be a lot of experimenting going on over the next few weeks and months!

amiapropermum · 21/03/2020 11:54

I'm not confident enough to get the right combination of colours and then mix them myself! I was nervous trying the esalon one but the colour charts are handy and it's turned out really well.

BIWI · 21/03/2020 15:40

If it's just a roots issue, and you know you'll get to the salon soon, I can really recommend this spray

It looks completely natural and blends in with the colours you have on your hair.

checkedcloth · 21/03/2020 15:57

I am in the same boat. Am front line NHS nurse so haven’t been able to get to a hairdresser for a couple of weeks. Am looking hideous already.

Any recommendations of root touch up for blinds?

BemidjiMinnesota · 22/03/2020 01:50

@amiapropermum Does the esalon mix have different dyes for highlights or is it all one colour? I have reddish blonde hair with a few highlights too and am having nightmares about using a box colour and ending up looking like Morticia Adams Blush

amiapropermum · 22/03/2020 07:35

@BemidjiMinnesotaThey do highlights too. I haven't tried them yet but am considering it!
