Looking old ..makeup making matters worse

I’m 44 and I’ve always been reasonably happy with how I look . I’ve always cleansed and moisturised , don’t smoke , drink or sunbathe .
My skin this winter got very dry and sensitive so I’ve had to find different skincare that works for that BUT even so , seemingly overnight I look old and lined and putting makeup on is no longer fun as it just seems
To be making me look worse !
Is it time to accept I can’t look nice anymore and pack in the makeup ?
Feel a bit sad .

Don’t be silly, you mustn’t give up just try some new products! Have you tried a primer? I use a maybelline one and it gives a really nice smooth base. Also are you moisturising day and night with a rich moisturiser? I’ve started to do this and use a serum at night and it’s really helping my skin now I’ve noticed it becoming much drier (I’m 39).
Also use a moisturiser with an spf of at least 30.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 13/03/2020 15:07

Oh, Also - don’t use powdery makeup. I only use a dab of pressed powder on my nose and chin to stop shine then a swirl of peachy pink blusher on my cheeks. I don’t use much eyeshadow either and I use natural colours (for instance I’ve recently changed my usual Liquid pen eyeliner From black to brown as it looks more natural). You don’t want to look harsh or overly-done up. Try using a lip gloss rather than lipstick. Or I sometimes just use chapstick and go over it with a lip, liner (Bobbi brown ballet pink is lovely).

Maybe change the type/style/look of your makeup? Try an in store makeover using a brand you like, and ask for suggestions? (Often free or cost can be redeemed for products)

I've stopped using under eye concealer,if I don't use it and just use the last bit of foundation I have on my brush I look fine BUT the second I use concealer I suddenly have horrible linesHmm

I think you just need a make up overhaul as skin and hair colour and skin type changes at this age.

Nicketynac · 13/03/2020 16:28

I have had to stop wearing matte or heavy foundation, and need to be more careful with concealer around my eye area. Just took a while to find ones that I was happy with (and am not entirely happy with them yet!)

inwood · 13/03/2020 16:28

I just use B.B. cream now it's much more flattering for me than foundation.

Bluntness100 · 13/03/2020 16:32

It’s the type of make up. It’s not all make up. You just need new make up.

paininthepoinsettia · 13/03/2020 16:34

Any heavy moisturizer recommendations? I'm finding my skin has dried a lot as I age.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 13/03/2020 16:55

CeraVe hydrating wash and CeraVe cream in the tube- fabulous stuff!

TheYearOfTheDog · 13/03/2020 17:00

Put a drop of loreal iluminator in yr make up. It makes the make glow a bit but not a silly amount!
Also, i think, a pinker cream blush than i have worn
in years.

Elasticatedwaist · 13/03/2020 17:21

So i need new makeup , any recommendations ? I am pale with fair hair and looking (at the moment ) Washed out .

I have been using an Avon moisturiser for the last few years and for someone younger it might feel a bit heavy I suppose, but for me, in my early fifties, it's brilliant. Works really well underneath EL Double Wear, which I find is too dry without a decent moisturiser underneath.

Anyway - it's this.

Tradams · 13/03/2020 17:30

Sorry - posted the link for the night cream, but it's the day cream you'd want. Here.

lindyloo57 · 13/03/2020 18:35

I was thinking of giving up on foundations as it sits in my lines, but at 59 still need some coverage, so today is no foundation day, what I did is wear is tinted 30 spf, over that I just brought from super drug gosh primer plus base it's a skin adaptor goes on white but changes colour to blend in with your skin colour, over that a touch of Laura mercier mineral foundation, I can't believe the staying power, and it didn't sit in my lines as much, it lasted all day, just my nose and chin worn off a bit, that happens with every foundation I use, even double wear.

florriepeck · 13/03/2020 19:19

Have a look at the Look Fabulous Forever website.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 13/03/2020 19:21

I've felt the same way recently

I was recommended on here both Clarins Glow and IT Cosmetics CC cream, they are both really good.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 13/03/2020 19:27

I’m 43 and having similar issues to you. I recently swapped to Charlotte tilbury powder and it’s been much better. It really does have an almost airbrushes finish. The pressed powder doesn’t say very long though as I hit pan within a few weeks.

I have also found using a cc/bb cream is better than a foundation for my skin now. I don’t need the coverage of a foundation just a bit of colour correction and some moisturiser.

If I want to wear foundation then I like the chanel vitalumiere. The ordinary serum foundation is a good budget option. But definitely not the full coverage one that’s too drying and settles in even the tiniest of lines.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 13/03/2020 19:49

Late 50's here. I wear a small amount of a no7 foundation, applied by fingers (clean, obs) which seems to warm it into the skin, and look like a lighter application. Tend to just wear brown eyeliner pencil, at the outside of my eye, and smudged with a cotton bud. I also wear brown mascara, and try to leave myself time for lipstick applied with a brush, which gives a lighter touch.

TorkTorkBam · 13/03/2020 19:53

I have your skin type and colouring I think but am a few years ahead.

Change your cleanser. Exfoliate. Use primer, cream blusher, lighter foundations, ditch concealers.

I like Lancome primer, Dior primer, Clarins beauty flash balm primer.

Dior, Lancome and Boots no 7 foundations work for me.

My lipsticks double as cream blusher. It works v v well.

skinnymarshmallow · 13/03/2020 20:00

Botox and Dior foundation

peaceanddove · 13/03/2020 20:04

You need good quality make up applied with a light hand. I use Laura Mercier Candleglow foundation applied with a damp make up sponge, and I spend a good 3-4 minutes buffing it into my skin and over my eye area. I use a dot of Collection concealer in the corner of my eyes as it doesn't settle in any lines.

I tight line under my upper lashes with a dark brown eyeshadow and really work it into the base of the lashes.

I then curl my lashes before using Masterpiece mascara by Max Factor because it never clumps or flakes.

I buff a rosy pink creme blusher into the tops of my cheeks, I use a Bobbi Brown one, and then just press a tiny bit of pressed powder onto the tip of my nose to prevent shine but I no longer use it anywhere else on my face.

Lastly I use a soft pink lipstick like Clinique's Tenderheart or just the tinted Vaseline in Rose.

The look I aim for is 'still pretty but in a delicately faded way' Grin

Ginfordinner · 13/03/2020 20:05

I am 61 and find that less is more. I don't want the Barbara Cartland look. I can't find a BB cream or tinted moisturiser that doesn't make me look orange, and find that foundation is too heavy for me. So I mixed a foundation in the right colour with some moisturiser, and it is perfect.

I just use eye pencil and mascara for a night out for eye make up.

Bluntness100 · 13/03/2020 20:16

Mac silver light as an illuminator, use it as a base, then personally I like Chanel le teint ultra foundation and Charlotte tilbury magic genius powder. Makes me all dewy and sort of Illuminated, in a good healthy way. Like perfect skin.

Can anyone recommend a good primer that will soften fine lines and give me a (very slight) glow?
