Is a balayage the right choice?

I'll start by saying I know NOTHING about hair so sorry if this is a stupid question

I want to freshen up my hair and I wanted something a bit more modern. I feel a bit frumpy. I usually just put a box colour on at home every couple of months. But it's my birthday and my husband is treating me to hairdresser appointment.

I've booked a bayalage, but now I'm wondering if it's the right choice. I have a few greys at the front to cover, and I assume a bayalage won't cover these? They aren't very obvious, and mostly only visible when I lift my hair up, but they are the reason I dye my hair and would hate for them to still be visible after paying all that money.

Do I cancel the bayalage and book something else? If so, what? Highlights? Just a colour? I want to stay brunette, but with some caramel highlights perhaps. But I'm very open to suggestions! Any advice welcome, I really have no clue!!!

I would definitely think you want highlights rather than balayage. They will make your greys blend in and will grow out better.

Thank you, that's what I'm thinking now too. It's just everything I read online says how "old fashioned" highlights are. But I do think they will be better for blending in my greys. I just don't want to look stripy!

I also want a couple of inches trimmed off my hair so it will only be just past my shoulders, so maybe too short for a nice bayalage?

I’ve got a similar amount of greys as you have - not that many but annoyingly they are all at the front so more visible if I tie my hair up. I get balayage plus a few highlights at the front to blend in the grey hairs. I really like it. Tell them to make the highlights as thin as they can.

I have balayage and my hair is shorter than yours. I like it- much less “stripey” than highlights.

You have all given me plenty to think about there. I plan to get to the appointment slightly early so I have time to talk to her about what I want beforehand and hopefully she will recommend what will work best. I like the thought of a bayalage though if they can make it work.

I have balayage and then she tints my roots to cover greys, with a natural colour.

You can get a balayage with a root tint/stretch which I think would look good. I think a good balayage looks great. I get it and I love it, I won’t be going back to highlights anytime soon

They might sue the top dark and then do the balayage - they did with me
