Hourglass veil or other setting powder?

EndlessUserName · 12/03/2020 13:53

I love this setting powder. About the run out, considering the hourglass ambient light powder instead, but is this more of a highlighter? I want a setting powder (for whole face but especially to set correction concealer under eyes) should I stick to veil? Or another? Benefits such as blurring or other things always a bonus! I have dry fair skin. Thanks!

I use Laura Mercier and before that Chanel. Found both very good, maybe LM slightly better. I didn't like the specialist under eye - it was much too white for me.

EndlessUserName · 12/03/2020 14:52

Thanks, been thinking about LM too as see it recommended loads. What's so good about it?

Very finely milled and it doesn't make me look at all chalky. I am 53 and it doesn't go cakey if I use it to set concealer. I really like it and I am very fussy!

EndlessUserName · 12/03/2020 19:21

Thank you! Any other recommendations? Would love to hear if anyone has used both as there's nothing wrong with the veil but I have heard such good things about LM too!

I think there probably is no right or wrong - both are probably great - so just go with the brand you like more in terms of price, branding, convenience etc

EndlessUserName · 12/03/2020 21:11

I am happy with the veil but I still have creases under my eyes... Would LM be better for this?

I love ByTerry Hydra Powder.

justilou1 · 12/03/2020 21:32

I use both powders, and can honestly say they are both gorgeous, but totally different. LM is much matte-er than Hourglass and less blurring. It produces a completely different finish and lasts a bit longer, especially in T-zone or on oilier skin types. Much better in photos, etc. If you have one of the Hourglass palettes, you can always apply Ambient Lighting Powder over the top of LM, and you probably don’t need the HG setting powder.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 12/03/2020 21:34

i've got the ambiwent power and only use it over a matte setting powder, otherwise i'm far too shiny. i probably wouldn't buy it again for the prie

planning to try LM next

EndlessUserName · 12/03/2020 21:44

Hmm I'm not sure about LM if it's very matte... I quite like a glowy look. Is there a powder to blur, glow and stop creases? Or do I need to be looking at separate setting and finishing powders?!

@mommybunny is by Terry like this ^ ?

I also love By Terry, but I do a quick whoosh of Hourglass Diffused Light over it.

justilou1 · 12/03/2020 23:46

LM is not very matte in a flat, chalky way. It just isn’t blurring and illuminating like the HG is. It is flattering on my crepey, 48y/o eyes if that helps. (Am wearing it now.) If I feel the need for illumination, I use the ambient lighting powder. (Am not a highlighter kind of woman.) The other selling point for me was that the HG has 10g of product in the jar and the LM is cheaper and has 29.2g of product.

NowWhatUsernameShallIHave · 13/03/2020 00:00

I think you’ll find lm too matte and the ambient doesn’t really set the makeup but is more finishing
Cover fx was nice but I don’t think they sell in U.K.
I’ve heard the Lancôme one is quite glowy but I’ve fouyalot of their stuff over perfumed

I do think the hourglass veil is probably the best for what you are looking for - a setting powder with. Bit of glow

EndlessUserName · 13/03/2020 07:32

Thanks so much for the advice everyone. I'm thinking of staying with my veil. It does crease a bit though under my eyes, is that because I'm using a fluffy powder brush? Should I be kind of pushing it into the skin under my eyes? Any tips or tools I should use? Thank you all!!

I own the following loose powders:

  • Hourglass veil
  • Laura Mercier
  • Chanel
  • By Terry tinted hyaluronic hydra powder

I actually like the Chanel one the most, but I have combination skin and find it gives the best longevity and has an imperceptible texture.

My second favourite is the By Terry, it's extremely natural but not great at controlling oil. Would be lovely on dry skin types.

Third favourite is Hourglass, followed by Laura Mercier.

il0vew1ne · 13/03/2020 08:14

I have laura mercier and its very chalky on me would not buy it again

EndlessUserName · 13/03/2020 21:15

Thank you all for your advice! I'm going to stick with veil Smile do you all use powder brushes? Been looking at powder puff for under eye area?

OP posts:
EndlessUserName · 13/03/2020 21:15

Powder puff to help with creasing I hoped

OP posts:
BunnytheBee · 13/03/2020 21:38

I use the LM and find it does a good job

I use a brush but worth trying a puff

Sandleman · 14/03/2020 01:53

I have LM. It’s excellent but the Veil is even better. I don’t put it under my eyes.

Sandleman · 14/03/2020 01:56

Try moisturiser /serum under eyes first. Not sure if it will work, but it may iron out the wrinkles first before the powder goes in them ifkwim.

EndlessUserName · 14/03/2020 09:25

Thank you. I moisturise first and use primer under my eyes too but still find my concealer creases. I don't use foundation but I use a cream colour correcting concealer which is a bit heavy and then ysl touche éclat on top.

OP posts:
EndlessUserName · 14/03/2020 09:26

@Sandleman why don't you put it under your eyes? Do you use any powder there?

OP posts:
BunnytheBee · 14/03/2020 09:28

I don’t use powder under my eyes!

I have an issue with concealer settling but not sure how to deal with that or if powder would help

Sandleman · 14/03/2020 16:41

@stopfundinghate I don’t find I need power there. I just use it on my t-zone
