Hair thinning at hair line only

My hair is thick everywhere except the first inch and a half of my hair line at the forehead and temples are 40% thinner than the rest. I feel very self conscious about it.

I've tried hair fibres but it just made my scalp look dirty and sometimes smudged on my forehead plus its not natural looking up close.

Doesnt matter where i part it its uniformly thin at the front.

Will a fringe disguise thinning front of hair or draw more attention?

Do i dye my hair a lighter shade? Its currently black (natural colour)

I think this was trigerred by ongoing stress from work which peaked about 6 months ago. I see baby hair growth so hopeful its reverseable.

I'm having exactly the same problem, at the front and sides, and under bright lights you can see my scalp. I'm so upset about it and I can see my husband sometimes looking at it and I feel so embarrassed. I have naturally very thick dark hair so this has come as a shock to me. Mine started just after being diagnosed with crohn's and moving abroad. I've started taking iron tablets but no change. It's got worse lately but started 4 years ago. I have no advice but just wanted to offer my support.

I can empathise with both of you, my hair has thinned so much i have almost bald patches, and been seeing a dermatologist for the last 9 months, who has said it is stress related, and will grow back, i am still waiting,
He said it is Telogen Effluvium
He gave me strong steroid lotion which can work for some, hasn't worked for me
Ask at your surgery if they have a Dr who is a dermatologist,
My surgey does, and although i have had some long waits for appointments ,it is free

TV make up artists use a bit of eye shadow in a matching shade to disguise a receding hairline on men. How well it would work IRL I can't tell you; what if it rained?

Supplements ! Especially biotin and collagen xx also castor oil hair mask once or twice a week with a warm towel (you may want to use an old one) over your head for a few hours, preferably overnight 🙂

I would google androgenic alopecia because it sounds like it might be that.

Minoxidil is the only thing that can help stop it, it did nothing for me.

You get coloured hairsprays which disguise the scalp but I've not tried them.

I was told a fringe would just make it look worse.

Sympathy from me too. I had a blood test, and was told mine is basically male pattern hair loss as it's my hormones.
(I'm female)
I try and avoid having lights directly over my head.

This can also happen from tying hair back regularly and/or tightly.

Ginkypig · 11/03/2020 15:00

Ye I was going to ask if you wear your hair up regularly especially if the style adds tension to the front. Like a ponytail or a top bun etc or do you brush your hair when it is wet esspe Brush it back?

It can weaken and break the front at the hair line but also at the neck but obviously you can't see the neck side so no one ever notices that.

If it's not a styling issue then it could be a skin condition possibly or a vitamin/hormone issue or thyroid issue or some gynaecological issues can thin hair or a type of alopecia or menopause or even excess sweating can block the hair follicles by leaving salt deposit in the follicles or a lot of things actually, I'd see a gp to rule out things and be extra careful about brushing and styling as the hair is weak etc

BusterGonad · 11/03/2020 16:23

I'm trying to stop tying my hair up, I am very stressed and have been for a few years, I do dye my hair but always have. I think mine is due to stress and a bit of depression but the crohn's doesn't help as I can't absorb B12 and am low on iron.

princessTiasmum · 11/03/2020 23:39

I would like a blood test for hormones, but was told they are not reliable enough to give a true reading
I have even had a scalp biopsy, which showed nothing up
I have had every test going, and started taking Biotin, which did help nails grow stronger, and the hair i have left grew like weeds, but no new hair
I am seeing the derm, tomorrow again, don't know what else he can do, but i will update
He said it's not in the usual pattern for female pattern hair loss, which is why he thinks stress related, and i am very stressed at the moment too,and the hair loss doesn't help,as i can't go anywhere without a hat, so not looking forward to summer, also getting very depressed now
Also zinc and Vit D is necessary for hair growth

princessTiasmum · 13/03/2020 13:45

Saw the Derm, again yesterday,he said to see him at the end of summer, when i should have seen Growth,
Still not holding my breath though

I have v thin hair. My natural hair colour is dark mouse. I have highlights in my hair because a) the bleach swells the hair strands and b) the blonde and variegated colours blend better with my scalp and the thin bits are much less obvious. My hair doesn't look great, it's bit tatty and the condition isn't shiny and swingy but it doesn't look noticeably thin and I'm not self conscious under lights.

I'm not so stressed now as I was during earlier years in my life and my hair is better too. I think it's a mix of genetics and stress in my case.
