Son’s acne/scaring ... any at home light therapy that’s helpful?

My son is 19 and has active acne but also scarring. Such a shame as he’s not a confident young man at the best of times. Dr has tried various things...all drying and worsening his sensitive/dry skin.

Having gone through the contents of Holland & Barratt and Green People, I’m at a loss.

He doesn’t pick at his skin but I’m really concerned about the scarring, going forward.

If normal prescription treatments have failed & the acne is persistent you can request a referral to dermatology for roaccutane.

It’s in the NICE guidelines.

Is it worth trying an LED light face mask? They usually have different colours which target different skin issues. I have one and used regularly my skin does seem better. However I don’t have much in the way of scarring - so can’t say if it works on that specifically.
Think I have this one
light mask

I use one but I still got cystic acne.

I do use it for post inflammatory hyper pigmentation scarring on the red & green settings. I’ve got very pale skin so it’s a long job.

Acne is a medical problem at the end of the day.

@Mbear, I’ve looked at those but it says it doesn’t work in All Acne. Also, DS has has Aspergers and treatment which requires commitment can be difficult.

May have to revisit the GP.

Have you tried bio-oil? It's great for active acne and scars. Smile

@Kikkoman so Bio-oil is out? I have heard good things about it @GeordieTerf.

Scarring acne needs Roaccutane, as others here have said. Don't hang about or waste any more money on OTC stuff. Push for a derm referral or go privately - it would be the best money you ever spend.

Kikkoman · 02/03/2020 09:58

It always brought my boils out Blush

This is really good for regenerating skin. I posted it last night but the link took you straight to my personal account Grin

Plus if it doesn’t work you can use it. I swear by it and makes my face look fresh and smooth

Bio-oil is crap. It doesn’t contain any active ingredients and you might as well rub vegetable oil on your face for all the good it does.

Please don’t use retinol on active acne, not without a dermatologist’s prescription. As @CatherineTheNotSoGreat said, don’t mess about with OTC stuff, he will end up reacting to something and then be even worse off. See the GP again, demand (nicely but firmly) a referral as is your clinical right, and let a dermatologist help him.

Will see the GP (IF we can get an appointment! 😡)

Thanks all 😊
