Thinking of taking up jogging in Spring. Any links, product recommendations and tips are appreciated!

Ooh also - I like a bumbag for my phone etc.

And I have a fancy Garmin watch now but that’s far from necessary. I use Map My Run app but most people use Strava.

I’ve been running for over 20 years and would recommend the Shock Absorber running bra.
Good trainers are a must.
As a PP said you need leggings with a tie waist and flat seams

Pinkarsedfly · 01/03/2020 19:10

Go to wiggle.com for really good running tights at a decent price.

I swear by ASICS Gel Cumulus trainers - in a year of running 5k two or three times a week, my knees are fine and I’ve never had a single blister.

Decent socks - I use More Miles, but anything with decent cushioning will do.

I like a sweat band as I need something to wipe my snotty nose on.

And if you can run to it Trekz Air bone conducting headphones are the business.

Pinkarsedfly · 01/03/2020 19:16

Oh, and Runderwear knickers!

Dozer · 01/03/2020 19:20

Yes yes to drawstring leggings, with minimal seams, nothing worse than having to hike them up and itchy legs!

fairgroundsnack · 01/03/2020 19:21

Agree with @Runningonempty84 - I favour Saucony road shoes but that’s just me... see what works for you. I love sweaty Betty and lululemon leggings and capris but they are expensive - ronhill, new balance, saucony gear is just as good. Cheap vests/T-shirts are fine. I adore my montane waterproof. And good quality running socks are worth the money!!

Gait analysis at a running shop. Usually free. It'll give you knowledge about your body that will be eternally useful, not just re shoes, but also re injuries. It's good to know your body mechanics. Also you might like to investigate barefoot shoes, and the running style. I wish someone had told me about this when I started.
You don't really need anything except appropriate shoes and a good running bra (another vote for Shock Absorber here), but I find running gloves useful, not least because they have a key-pouch, and a hat can help even if it just helps keep your hair out of your face.
Good luck, and enjoy. It's life changing, even when you only do a little.

Decathlon to begin with - unbeatable VFM for good quality which is totally fit for purpose.

Good bra.

Decent trainers (upgrade once you know it's a sport you'll be sticking with)

Some way to carry phone, keys etc securely

Shenanagins · 01/03/2020 21:38

A good sports bra is a must. I wouldn’t rush out and spend lots on kit to start with until you know that running is for you.
For a while I got by on cheap Nike trainers. I only got my gait checked when I became serious about running and was doing serious miles and now wear aesics.

I wouldn’t take anyone’s recommendations about trainers as that’s hugely personal and dependent on your gait.

The rest of my running gear is Nike but only because I stay near an outlet. Again what you wear is personal choice as I like long tights but my running partner prefers knee length so don’t spend a fortune at this stage.

I only wore a running belt when I was marathon training as I don’t like them so had my phone in a little pouch thing which you can buy online.

If I’m not really training for anything, I’ll just use either my map my run app on my phone which is free to download. It’s not as accurate as my garmin watch but that was a lot more expensive to buy and was only purchased when I started getting serious about training.
Basically what I’m saying is not to rush out and buy lots of expensive kit until you get a better feel for whether running is for you and your preferences.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I went running a few times last week.

I ended up buying:
Sports leggings
2x M&S extra impact bras (jogged on the spot in the changing rooms to find the best two. One has a zip front.)

I already had:
Cotton tops
Running trainers
Running jacket with thumbhole (so hands are mainly covered) and zipped pockets

I will re-read the thread when I need to upgrade my kit. I was already planning on the gait analysis when my current pair are done.

Lots of good advice here. I would definitely get quick dry/wicking clothing, cotton absorbs sweat and feels uncomfortable.
I'm of the view that if I look good, I feel good and more inclined to go for a run. Try Run Mummy Rum Second hand Running Gear Facebook Page too.

Nyancat · 09/03/2020 19:19

Just be careful with the zip front bras op, I had a few of them and loved them but with time they got to the point where I'd be out running/at gym class and the zip comes undone!
Recently changed to m&s extra impact one that's underwired, it's been good so far

MichaelMosleyisagod · 09/03/2020 19:21

Tikiboo.co.uk - love it! The leggings are so comfy
