Why is chantecaille so expensive?!

I've been using this beautiful cream from my space nk beauty advent calander. I was prepared for it to be about £80 I thought- Oh I might treat myself. Went online and it's £300!!! Why are these products so expensive? Surely very few people would pay that?

£300 for just 50ml?? Fuck me!! The hell does it contain? Love how one of the reviewers says “if it’s in your price range”... how many people are going to be able to afford it on a regular-ish basis??

toffee1000 · 24/02/2020 22:44

Just checked out their website... $52 for ONE eyeshadow. That’s £40. For ONE pot of eyeshadow... ShockShockShock

doadeer · 24/02/2020 22:48

Just crazy! I mean it is lovely... But not £300 lovely!

People must be willing to pay those prices or they wouldn't charge them.

NiteFlights · 25/02/2020 09:22

A lovely poster here once sent me a sample of a Sisley cream after I said I’d love to try it if I ever had the budget. It was ... nice. That’s all. I can’t imagine spending that kind of cash on skincare.

Housewife2010 · 25/02/2020 10:13

I have Chantecaille Just Skin Tinted Moisturiser. It's really nice but I'm not sure I love it enough to rebuy at the price. I was actually really pleased when it went up from £57 to £61 because I could then buy it during the next Space NK £15 off a £60 spend offer. Unfortunately it's gone up yet again.

abstractprojection · 25/02/2020 11:07

I've just checked the ingredients and it has a lot of premium natural oils, extracts and waxes. Mind you not 300 quids worth.

Posting the full ingredient lists into www.skincarisma.com/ it says that the really beneficial ingredients are below, maybe try find one with these

Anti-aging:
Beta-Carotene
Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
Citric Acid*
Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E)

Wound healing:
Sodium Hyaluronate
Alpha-Bisabolol

Brightening:
Alpha-Bisabolol

*Citric Acid and Alcohol can be bad for sensitive skin

They also do a lot for conservation charities, such as donating profits from many of their items.

I was gifted the stick foundation for Christmas and whilst it’s nice, it’s certainly not worth the price and I won’t be repurchasing.

thisenglishlife · 25/02/2020 11:17

Some other good ingredients it has: rose water, glycerin, shea butter, borage oil, jojoba oil and argan oil. Still not worth £300.

I have their healing mask (included as part of a £125 Cult Beauty Box) and it gives me really soft skin (whilst it's on), it's a much more reasonable £75... but that's still too much!

SuckingDieselFella · 25/02/2020 11:26

Wow, that's crazy.

If you're looking for a French skincare alternative I tried Occitane's Divine Immortelle from the M&S calendar and it was really good.

Puppylucky · 25/02/2020 20:03

They also do a beautiful Vetiver perfume that I can't afford Hmm

goose1964 · 25/02/2020 22:40

I won an £80 moisturiser a few years ago, it was good but I've used others with the same effect. The difference was the glow it gave me. No way would I buy it.

LaBuenaVida · 25/02/2020 23:30

I do love Chantecaille. I have the Just Skin and HD powder - a combined cost of about £120 😮😮. BUT both last a long time. And after many (expensive) experiments, they’re the only products that suit my menopausal face.

BretonKitten · 26/02/2020 04:35

I use their Faux Cils Longest Lash mascara. It’s ruined me for other mascaras.

humsnet · 26/02/2020 13:12

Once sat on a plan across the aisle from the founder, Sylvie. She so very clearly suffered from body dysmorphia. Her body was completely skeletal but her face was at bursting point with fillers. Not someone I aspire to look like at all.

It makes me really uncomfortable when women who are clearly fans of the surgeons knife front skincare and cosmetics brands - see also Trinny and Lulu, but also the woman who set up By Terry and Charlotte Tilbury. It’s so cynical, and abusive of the power of marketing. I don’t want the teenage girls in my family, who aspire to premium Space NK brands, thinking these figures are people whose example is one to follow.

fantasmasgoria1 · 26/02/2020 13:27

I just looked up sylvie and she is 65 but looks strange like she's had so much work done her face looks puffy, angular and she looks like someone older than 65 trying to look a lot younger. I agree with the previous poster who said she looks like she has body dysmorphia. Looking at it she's been in the beauty business for ages and the pressure to look really young and attractive must be awful. Her cosmetic ranges are way too expensive for what they are in any case.

CatherineTheNotSoGreat · 26/02/2020 15:07

Packaging, marketing, unicorn tears, breath of fairies, rose petals picked by virgins at dawn, in the phase of the full moon. Fuck knows why it's so expensive but NO cosmetic cream/lotion/potion is worth that price.

VenusClapTrap · 27/02/2020 23:13

I tried the mascara because I was recommended it for sensitive eyes. It was marginally better than most. But now I’ve found a cheaper one that is equally good.

LaurieFairyCake · 27/02/2020 23:20

Erm wow - is this really both Charlotte Tilbury? Just, wow.

I have a fairly large disposable income and over the years have spent a lot (boast alert) on cosmetics and skin creams. My verdict- the versions you buy in Superdrug and Boots are just as good. It's all bullshit, we are being played. The best thing you can do for your skin is eat well, stay hydrated and use sun protection.

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 28/02/2020 08:43

Laurie, the first picture isn’t CT, that’s one of the before pictures of the model they used to advertise her newest foundation.

fantasmasgoria1 · 02/03/2020 07:34

When. I first saw Charlotte Tilbury I thought she was in her 50s and had used botox. I was shocked to find out she was 46!

Buggedandconfused · 02/03/2020 07:40

Superdrug B range is great. Moisturisers are fantastic and come in nice weighty glass pots.

Deathraystare · 02/03/2020 16:06

It always makes me laugh when people say they love Creme de Mer. It is ££££ and apparently has a number of ingredients that Nivea also has in it. I bet a lot of these women who use it have a "second best", i.e just as good moisturiser that they use when they haven't got ££££.

I do like the look of the Chantecaillie eyeshadows but the price is a no way for me!

ShortAndSharp · 02/03/2020 18:35

I had the same thing with the samples of the ReVive creams I had. They are cheaper than the Chantecaille cream you've mentioned (but still out of my price range at the moment) but I had so many compliments after using them - I didn't feel the need to wear much make up at all, and that is unheard of for me. I tried to justify it but just can't right now. Maybe one day ...
