Can anyone who has cut dairy from their diet to improve acne help me out please?

Did it work? How long did it take for you to notice a difference? If you eat it again, do you see it affect your skin straight away?
I thought I'd noticed a difference after three weeks but I've since been told it takes longer for it to leave your system so maybe it wasn't the dairy?
I'm trying so many things and it's so hard to know what, if anything, is helping! Confused

Didn't cut it out for skin, but had to as ds was cmpa and breastfed. It takes around 6 weeks to leave the system. Check labels carefully....I was surprised at some of the foods that have milk products in them!

I’m allergic to milk and got cystic acne at 40. How are you getting enough calcium and vit d now? As well as iodine?.

If you have acne see your gp, if none of the standard prescriptions work get ref to dermatology & use accutane if they prescribe it.

I did all of this cutting things out of my diet and giving up alcohol & using otc products, none of it worked because I had an infection of p.acne bacteria feeding off my sebum.

My friend had acne but went vegan on 1st January, I saw her last week and wow she looks amazing, her skin is clear and glowing and sparkly eyes.

It's seriously making me consider giving up dairy.

dontgobaconmyheart · 24/02/2020 19:55

Limiting dairy helped me a little but cutting out gluten made a bigger difference -frankly thoughthe only thing that really helped in all honesty was the pill (yasmin).

I'd expect any exclusion diet to take a while to work on someones skin if there had previously been acne as there will be old spots clearing. Make sure you're not accidentally inesting dairy as it's in all sorts and I'd be wary of replacing with soy which anecdotally affects androgen levels.

When I cut out diary, my skin got really bad. I've still got red marks on my face from spots that I had over two years ago. It's quite annoying because it makes my skin look much worse than it actually is. The spots were also on my cheeks which is a place I never normally get spots. So just be aware that giving up diary could improve your acne, but it could also make it worse.

Dairy not diary, sorry Confused

Thanks so much everyone. Really helpful to read people's experiences. I've been to the GP, seen a consultant and on waiting list for accutane. Really trying to avoid taking it due to the potential mental health complications as my mental health isn't great as it is. Done all the antibiotics and creams and can't take combined pills so I'm stuck there.

@Fluffycloudland77 I've never heard of p.acne but just Googled. How was that diagnosed? Did accutane treat it? I hadn't considered my calcium and vit d levels etc to be honest.. skin is getting me down that much that it's become my focus! But thanks for the reminder!

The 6 week thing is a myth, it takes a lot less time to leave the system. Some articles suggest a few hours.

anonacatchat · 24/02/2020 20:44

Sorry but this is pretty nonsensical for most people .

Top derm Dr Anjali Mahto doesn't even recommend it .

What is your current skincare routine?

anonacatchat · 24/02/2020 20:46

Ps if they are recommending accutane that's good at least you're on the right track .

Tips for using it , lip balm lip balm lip balms !

LRP toleriane / LRP cicaplast baume !!!

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/02/2020 21:34

P.acne causes acne.

I took accutane, no mh issues and the nurse said they hadn’t anyone else who found it affected theirs but they ask about mood each month. It does make you tired but it’s 4-6 months out of an 80y lifespan so not a long time.

Life’s a lot better when you don’t wake up and check your face for spots every morning.

Scattyhattie · 26/02/2020 13:34

My friends skin really cleared up after giving up dairy, she still has a bit in diet but isn't as consuming as much or as frequently.

I had roaccutane about 20yrs ago & had been treated for depression prior to starting, i don't recall it making my MH any worse (luckily) but did have the dry skin, chronic sore lips and odd nosebleed.

In my 40's now & still get spots mainly jawline & chin but are minor compared to severe acne I had at time of treatment. My skin was amazing when I did a VLCD meal replacement diet, it was minimal carbs & i had no dairy plus 3+lts water a day, I think sugars make a difference my skin.

thisenglishlife · 26/02/2020 17:28

How are you getting enough calcium and vit d now
Dairy is actually not a good calcium source! Dairy leaches calcium in the conversion process and countries with low levels of dairy consumption do not have higher levels of osteoporosis, usually lower levels. Vitamin D is hard to obtain via diet (the full RDA, that is). I do consume dairy BTW.

user1480880826 · 26/02/2020 17:41

I’ve never heard of cutting dairy improving skin. When my son had CMPA and I had to stop eating dairy for 9 months my acne didn’t improve at all.

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/02/2020 18:07

I stand corrected on the calcium.

I wonder if cutting dairy coincides with healthier living generally? It cuts a huge amount of junk food out of your diet overnight. Even some wines contain lactose.
