Help - really dry hair - how can I make it glossy again??

I'm in my 40s and have noticed for a few years that my hair is getting dryer. It's also gong curly for the first time. What the hell?

Anyway, can anyone recommend a product that will calm it down and make it glossy again??? Thank you.

I use Aveda's Damage Remedy on the ends of my hair but that seems to have stopped working. I use Elvive's colour protect shampoo and conditioner.

Moroccan oil has been great for my hair. I put it on when it's damp then dry my hair. It doesn't feel even a tiny bit oily when it's on - love it.

If it's dry from colouring try Olaplex. Amazing stuff.

tenlittlecygnets · 24/02/2020 17:08

Not sure if it's colouring or just general age-related stuff... gah.

Have you done anything to your hair that may have clarified it? If you strip product buildup from your hair, it can give your hair more of a curl, and depending on what you've used, may have stripped it of its natural oils too, leaving it feeling dry

Olapex
My hair is in great condition since I started using Olapex

Loreal extraordinary oil. Someone on mumsnet recommended it and it's been a revelation!

dudsville · 24/02/2020 18:40

Philip kingsley elasticizer! Makes my hair flexible and shiny.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/02/2020 18:45

L'Oréal extraordinary oil- not the one for coloured hair as it's not as nice as the original

Gwenhwyfar · 24/02/2020 20:29

"try Olaplex. Amazing stuff."

Did nothing for me :(

pinkmagic1 · 24/02/2020 20:31

Palmers olive oil leave in conditioning spray is great for dry, coarse hair.

V dry hair tends to curl.

I would invest in a salon quality treatment. Kms is great. Kersstase and l oreal also used to good ones. Boots superdrug etc also do sachets - own brand and others (eg palmers). They srent as good long term but they will help in the short term and they coat about £1 and we can get two treatments out of each one.

I agree re the Moroccan oil on damp hair to. You can also get some.great leave in conditioners.

Hair oil - a revelation! Just like you, my hair turned dry, straw-like and wavy during my 40s until I discovered hair oil. I rub it into damp hair after washing, then blow dry.

The Elvive Extraordinary Oil is great, but I tend to use double the suggested amount. Or there are lots of alternatives - Wella do some nice ones.

Thank you! I have tried some single use hair conditioners, but want something more long-term.

Somebody on here recommended Coco and Eve hair mask. I have hair that has gone dry and coarser, age I guess. It is very good, but pricey. Check out reviews on Amazon. You can get a travel size to try out. I had never heard of it before but better than all the other stuff I tried. I use once a week.

SuckingDieselFella · 25/02/2020 01:07

Philip Kingsley's Elasticiser.

If you have a Sally Hair and Beauty shop near you, get a few keratin masks. They are what hairdressers use for their salon treatments and they only cost a pound or two.

My hair suddenly became quite dry, I think due to 2 pregnancies in 2 years, constant breastfeeding and hair loss.
It’s become amazingly soft the past few months due to using silicone free conditioners and hair masks. I only dry my hair with a tshirt now and keep it wrapped until it’s mostly dry. No hair dryer or styling tools. Curly girl method is great (google it) but I’ve just taken a few tips from that as I don’t have a lot of time.
I didn’t think it was possible for my hair to improve so much in a short time. But it looks shiny and soft without heat tools which I’ve never been able to achieve before this!
I really think silicones were coating my hair and stopping any moisture getting in. It took about 1 month to start noticing a difference.
Garnier hair food is a good silicone free mask.

Use coconut oil as an overnight hair mask. Just shampoo in the morning and you are good to go!

JollyGiraffe12 · 25/02/2020 02:01

Casting creme gloss in clear and oil on damp hair before you dry it helps enormously

everyrosehasathorn · 25/02/2020 02:11

Pantene hydrating butter creme is amazing, it is a gold tube. I just rub a small amount on the ends as it makes my roots quite greasy.

ViserionTheDragon · 25/02/2020 03:39

Another vote for Olaplex.

Ryantrain · 25/02/2020 05:50

Cantu hair mask! Or aussi hair mask

tenlittlecygnets · 25/02/2020 11:20

Brilliant, thanks all. Will start with the l'Oreal and work my way through the other suggestions if it doesn't work... Grin
