Hair falling out after blow dry at hairdresser

nada2106 · 23/02/2020 20:17

Can any of you, wise Mumsnetters give me advice please. DD went to a hairdresser for blow dry. She has thick curly hair and wanted just a blow dry. She said that she felt uncomfortable as a girl who was doing her hair could not handle it and called a colleague, then they spoke in a foreign language.. Anyway, once blowdrying was over, her hair smelled very unpleasant and looked very limp and straight. Today, she washed it, and it started falling out - her hair brush was so full of her hair that she couldn't finish brushing it! I suggested she goes back to the hairdresser and ask them which products they used and then to think what to do next in terms of natural remedy? thank you very much

Yes I think she needs to find out what they used on it. Is it breaking off or falling out?

nada2106 · 23/02/2020 20:24

It's not breaking but it is falling out, even when she gently pulls it out. She's been always proud of her hair and it is shocking really. I don't know what to suggest.

Was she having a straightening treatment?

nada2106 · 23/02/2020 20:51

No, she wanted jus a blow dry for curly hair! She smelled half way through her hair but being young and naive, didn't stop them. She thinks they might've just increased temperature in order to handle her hair easier and the damage has been done.

Heat would make it break off though not come out from the roots. As would chemical treatments.

nada2106 · 23/02/2020 21:01

Not sure what it is then. She thinks that they didn't put any chemical treatments. Hopefully someone with similar unfortunate experience sees this post.

Sorry I can't help op, I'm sure someone will be along soon that knows a bit more about it.

nada2106 · 23/02/2020 21:06

Thank you!

I'm not an expert but I'm sure hair doesn't just fall out from the roots after a blow dry, I've had loads and I don't remember the hair dryer getting THAT hot, do you think they could have used some treatment beforehand? I would go back and find out what they used, because the fact her smelled unpleasant suggests they might have done. Good luck!

nada2106 · 23/02/2020 21:21

Thank you Teddy. She will go back tomorrow to find out what exactly happened. I can't go with her, so just hope that they will be honest with her. She doesn't think that they used any chemical products, at least they didn't tell her and she didn't see them using them but.. you never know. Good night, will update tomorrow in case somebody could benefit from our experience.

Hi, I'm a trichologist. OP - can you have a look at the hairs. The end closest to the scalp - can you run your finger over the hair shaft and let me know if you can feel a bulb at the end. It will feel like a tiny blob, and if you hold it against a black t-shirt/jumper etc it will look white.

nada2106 · 24/02/2020 04:08

None of them seem to have any white blobs!

Thanks Hairclinic for gettin in touch. Do you think my DD should go and see one of your colleagues. She is in London, please PM me if you are or you have anybody to recommend. Thank you very much.

Hi, if there are no white 'blobs' on the end of the hair shaft, the hair has broken off for certain. I know an amazing trichologist in London, but if it is hair breakage then no trichologist can salvage the damage that has been done. Sadly. I guessed this was the case when you mentioned in an earlier post that your daughter noticed a smell in the middle of the processing time. Your best bet now, would be to get as much moisture into the hair shaft as you can, to improve the tensile strength of the hair and to minimise any more snapping. I will PM you some amazing products which will help. xx

jolufc · 25/02/2020 14:12

Please can you send me details of any products that make hair grow faster? Hairdresser cut off 3 inch from my daughters hair rather than 1 inch and she is upset. Thanks

nada2106 · 05/03/2020 23:47

Thank you Hairclinictricho and sorry for the late reply. Please send me pm if you can. Many, many thanks!

@hairclinicaltricho I'd love a pm of any amazing products that add moisture to dry (greying) hair.

Hope you get to the bottom of this for your DD OP.

Surely for her hair to be breaking off due to a blow dry they would have had to be burning her scalp? Confused

GrumpyHoonMain · 06/03/2020 01:03

Curly hair is more fragile than straight - mine has done this after routine straightening! Suggest using gently working almond or Indian Gooseberry (Amla) oil into the hair shafts before washing and leaving out conditioner for the moment.

nada2106 · 06/03/2020 20:33

No burning of scalp but her hair still smells of burn! It lost its volume and it is still falling out a lot when brushing it or just gently pulling it. Thanks for advice about oil - we will try that.

You need moisturising hair masks and you also need to know what exactly they did to her hair, definitely make a complaint. A simple blowdry shouldn’t cause breakage

nada2106 · 07/03/2020 16:06

Thank you!

Hi did you find out what happened to your daughters hair? How is it now?

nada2106 · 22/03/2020 18:05

Ah, she went to ask and they denied that they put anything on her hair. They almost laughed at her telling her that he hair shouldn't be falling from simple blow dry. She brushed it today and a lot has fallen out again! In the great scheme of things, the problem may look silly but nevertheless it is a problem! The hairdresser refused to give her money back but offered her some beauty treatment instead which, obviously she refused.

Does she brush her hair normally? I don’t as I have curly hair. I always lose a lot more when I’ve blow dried it straight. Also the tension needed to blow dry straight could easily cause breakage.
