Has anyone just stopped wearing make up?

It’s a complete non issue and I’m well aware of it but....
I’ve been wearing make up all my life (since I was maybe 13-14). My twenties and early 30s - full face on every day. I’m now nearer my 40s and possibly just having a midlife crisis Grin
I stopped colouring my hair and have a lovely salt and pepper mix on my head now. I still cut and style my hair, obviously. I wear a lot less make up (for my standards) too: mascara, eyeliner, matting powder and concealer, possibly a bit of bronzer if I’m feeling wild.
I have a professional job, I try and look presentable for work (most days anyway Grin). Last couple of weekends I went without make up and actually felt great.
Here comes the big question: has anyone ditched make up completely and avoided all the stupid “oh you look tired” or “are you ill” comments? I don’t think I can cope with them.
Or is make up a part of tidy professional look?
I’m not really sure what I’m asking, excuse my ramblings.

I’ve found less is more as I’ve got older. I still put some powder on my brows as I have a mix of blonde and brown, some eyeliner and mascara on upper lashes but that’s it. I might go back to using a bit of foundation if we go back into the office but that won’t be until next year.

ive tried but feel too self conscious. i have have had people at work do double takes or ask if im tired. i think i benefit from defined eyes and filling in areas where hair has never grown.

i suffer with bluish - grey eye bags. a sunken set eye socket area with porcelain tone skin. sleep/water/diet or make up doesnt make it disappear but certainly softens the contrast with even just tinted moisturiser.

I've mostly ditched it over this period of time wfh but I have rosacea and still put on foundation from time to time. I do this to stop others commenting on my flush, I get "oh you look hot" quite a lot. Since I'm seeing very few people irl and my camera is highly pixelated I've been enjoying just being clean. Personally I like seeing my natural face, but I too can be shocked at times when I look in the mirror and see that my skin has flushed. I can't feel it when it happens.

I'm 53 and never started – much to my little sis's disappointment. If I only grew my hair, put a ribbon in it and popped on a nice frock, I'd make someone a lovely wife. Who knew? Grin

I am 57 and had a makeover and the make up artist put too much colour over my eyes up to my eyebrows. She also did not make me up properly and I look as if I am aged 70 in the make up photos. I also have a long narrow face which does not help. I came away thinking the make up artist did not know what she was doing and I told her I wanted a subtle look but she put tons of eye shadow on me. I will never use her again or recommend her to anyone

Yes. I always wore make up for work and now I work from home I don't bother. I sometimes wear it for Zoom calls but often just some under eye concealer, mascara and brow pencil whereas Id usually have foundation, blusher etc as well.

I can't decide whether I'm happy with it. I definitely feel comfortable not wearing make up but I was thinking the past few days how I might enjoy getting done up a bit. I did my hair the other day and felt like a new woman 😂

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 20/09/2020 20:40

I wear lipstick for work and for a special occasion I’ll add some mascara.

Ylvamoon · 20/09/2020 20:47

I just don't wear make up... I have a professional job working with people. Nobody has ever commented on my "looks", but when it comes to guessing my age I come in at 6-7 years younger! 😁

OhTheRoses · 20/09/2020 21:01

I'm 60 and have worn make-up since I was about 14/15.

Foundation, under eye concealer, dust of translucent powder, mascara, blusher, lipstick. Takes about 3 minutes.

Had a consultation at the Lancome counter when I got married 30 years ago and the lovely chap showed me how to put on discreet eyeliner and blend mascara which I do for special events, and use a lip liner and lip brush for those things too.

IMO make-up should enhance and be barely visible.

Just like hair colour: bit of blonde, bit of light brown, bit of caramel, let the Grey blend.

gindinner · 20/09/2020 21:02

I feel fine without it and think I look ok, but I look more presentable, or at least feel that I do, when wearing some. The man I'm dating also wears it, concealer, mascara and tinted lip, balm.

BunnyLovesBananas · 20/09/2020 22:31

OP if you want naturally luscious lashes I recommend UK Lash. It's a lash growth serum and I assume similar to revitalise though I haven't tried that. I got it from QVC and it really has made my lashes grow quite a lot plus they are naturally curled now.

GeorgiaWeLoveYou · 20/09/2020 22:47

I enjoy wearing makeup. I wear makeup to work. I don't feel ready for work if I don't.

At the weekends, I don't usually wear any other than brows and a little bit of mascara. I enjoy wearing no makeup too, it's refreshing. And then I wear a full face if going out for the evening.

You don't have to cut makeup out completely.

doadeer · 20/09/2020 23:01

I'm 30 I don't wear it most days, only at weekends when I'm feeling fancy! I would miss nice lipsticks if I never used them. I love a great bold lipstick and a nice hat.

I constantly get Id'd - I think it makes you look younger.

Though I am obsessed with skincare so I spend a long time looking after my skin.

LunaTheCat · 20/09/2020 23:12

Inspiring thread - I am mid 50’s and wear a bit more now - always SPF 50, tinted moisturiser, have lashes tinted and brows shaped professionally. Wear a sweep of single colour eyeshadow and some eyebrow pencil and lippy. At weekends just the SPF.
I feel so sad when I look at young women and their faces are contoured, highlighted, foundationed to death - you see very little of the woman.
But then again maybe I am just being old!

Flute56 · 21/09/2020 00:44

foundation does not suit me and so I wanted to ask does anyone use a tinted mousturiser and how do tinted mousturisers differ

LunaTheCat · 21/09/2020 02:40

“Flute” I wear tinted moisturiser - I think as you get older especially less is more
From another flute player🎼 - unless you mean a champagne flue - which is even better!

JimmyTheBrave · 21/09/2020 09:19

I haven't been wearing makeup during lockdown but previously would always wear it for work.

My skin is so much better for the break that if I do feel like I need coverage in future I think it'll be tinted moisturiser at the most.

JimmyTheBrave · 21/09/2020 09:20

Tinted moisturiser is much lighter than foundation and won't give a 'caked' look, even when layered. I'd imagine it doesn't have as much staying power either. A happy medium between no makeup and foundation I suppose.
BobbinThreadbare123 · 21/09/2020 09:40

I wear tinted moisturiser instead of foundation. As with foundations, they have different staying powers. The best has been a Garnier one I got for a fiver from the supermarket! A BB cream gives better coverage.
