Make up lesson - department store? Recommendations please?

I was never one for elaborate make up, have always gone for a minimal, fairly natural look, but I’m aware that time’s moved on and I’m doing the same old same old and I see other women my age looking much more polished and together and there’s no excuse for me not to be presented better.

I’m early 50’s, I don’t want to look too overly done up, but I’ve never really managed to work out how you do smokey eyes or good eyeliner etc, but I’d like to look a little more polished and special for me and of course for my lovely other half. Eyebrows is a “thing” I’m not sure if I need to do something about, lashes? Ditto, but I suppose starting with basic (more skilful) application would be a good place to start...

So I was wondering if going to a department store and getting someone to make me over so I can learn how it’s done, what stuff to use, brushes etc would be a good idea?

Where to start? Which brand would suit etc? How do I go about educating myself?

Space nk- always see my age (45+) getting a make up refresh there. Lots of options too for trying different brands.

Don't forget that anyone working in a department store are just trying to sell you products! They might offer a free make-over and give some tips, but are ultimately just selling. I'd find an independent make-up artist- one that either has a studio or comes to your home to actually train you.

I don't know if they still do it but Fenwicks in London used to offer a totally independent skin/make up service. It cost about £50 but this was offset on any products you bought.
I had it done just before my wedding so was about 16 year ago though!
Maybe other department stores offer something similar?

I completely get the sales assistant flogging you something and SpaceNK wouldn’t be any different I’m sure, I looked at Bobbi Brown too before posting the thread and it’s absolutely my kinda look.

There is a spaceNK not that far from me, I’ll venture over there at some point
