Anyone had a perm recently?

I had one in the 80's (Thanks Mum) and it was bloody hideous.

My hair on now chest length and is wavy in parts and dead straight in others.

It is not nice.

It only looks presentable if I've straightened the lot of it. It's just so bloody inconsistent.

Would the softest of perms give me a soft wave?! Without rendering me bald??

I had one (well, three consecutively, across 18 months) but I’ve let it grow out because I got sick of having crispy hair. It’s nice to have soft hair again, so I’d caution against the perm.

Btw, it was a Joico digital perm I had each time.

Thanks Foureyes. Is that the softest you could have?
Did you like it?
Did you have to style the hell out of it for it to look half decent?!

Have you tried curly girl method for making the most of your waves? I imagine if your hair is wavy and not curly you won’t be able to give up shampoo but I mean more the products and drying.

Do you style it ? I have curly hair but left to its own devices it would be a ball if frizz .. some curl cream and a diffuser and it's awesome !

Have tried - there are too ma y straight panels that hang limp no matter what I chuck at them. I only have even curls if I dry my hair, straighten my hair, then use a curling wand.

Too much faff!

Yes, I had to style it to within an inch of its life! It generally lasted for three days before it needed washing and resting, though. I liked it a lot when it was styled, but I’ve decided more recently that I just want to wash my hair, leave it to dry and not care if it doesn’t look great. It’s been very liberating to give up styling my hair (and face - I’ve given up most makeup too), and I honestly haven’t noticed getting less respect since I stopped making any effort!

It was definitely the best perm on offer at the salon, but I don't know if there might be better ones available generally.

Thanks Foureyes

I colour my hair so I'm not sure if both will be too much. Did you treat it with oils/serums to try and restore softness?

Yes - various oils, but the chemical damage is permanent (hence the perm bit of its name!). Sad
