In between hairdresser colours - need to cover grey

I'm starting a new job a week or so before my scheduled tint at the hairdresser. I don't want to start the job with my grey roots showing. I've tried the L'Oreal Magic Retouch spray in the past, but it dries out my hair which usually feels very soft. How can I (easily) cover the grey temporarily as a stop gap? I have dark brown hair, if that makes any difference.

Casting Creme semi-permanent leaves hair really soft and glossy and covers my grey effectively. It leaves my hair in such good condition that I sometimes use it just for that. Just choose a shade as close to your own colour as possible. I use Dark Brown.

Thanks. Is it easy to use? I've never done any hair colouring myself and I dread making a big mess of hair dye in the bathroom (and all over my forehead) !

I use an eye shadow powder in a similar shade
As most come with a tiny applicator its ideal for root touch ups. Washes out. Doesn't damage your hair. Lasts ages.

You can get root cover dyes that you just paint over your roots. They come in a few shades that are supposed to blend to the rest of your hair. Clairol have one and Superdrug does its own brand. It is permanent though so you might be better using a semi-permanent, although they don't always cover the grey.

It’s dead easy. You just need to be careful to towel dry your hair thoroughly before putting the colour on so that it doesn’t run. Then wipe off any stray colour or splashes within the first few minutes so that it doesn’t stain your skin or the washbasin.

This - absolute game changer.

There are others who do it as well (I think Colour Wow was the original) but this one is just as good and so God damn cheap! You literally just brush it onto your roots, it doesn't go everywhere and there is no horrid sticky residue like with the sprays (believe me, as someone who started going grey in her late teens, I've tried everything!)

Just get a spray !! Spray in and washes out !

Thanks. I'm going to look into the options

I'm just experimenting with the new Defy Grey shampoo. I'm blonde with a dark root smudge, so I'm only using it on my roots. I think it's having a good effect but it's subtle. It's leaving my hair nice & soft though, so that's a positive.

I use colour wow powder. It isn’t cheap but it’s very good because it has various flecks of colour so looks more natural when applied. The dark brown is extremely dark so you may find that the medium brown is better for you.
