Can someone explain hair toners to me please

I'm so confused Confused

I have highlights in my hair to lighten it a bit in an attempt to hide the greys.
I (was) naturally dark brown, now more of a mid brown with light brown/almost blonde highlights.
So the highlights only get done every once in a while for regrowth but how often do I need to get the toner part done?
Can I tone it myself?
I saw some JW gloss toners in Boots but do I go for darker brown or for blonde? Does the toner just 'attach' to the highlighted hair?
Clueless!

My understanding is toners deposit colour and wash out eventually

I never toned when i had highlights. I only started doing it when i bleached the whole lot silver and tone out the yellow.

I'm not much help to you Grin

I've never put toner on myself, however, I have one put on at the salon whenever my highlights have started to go a bit brassy. Like if I've been on a beach holiday for a fortnight, I know my hair will need a toner it when I get back.

Same here, I have them applied at the hairdressers to remove the yellow tones.

Mmmm I was hoping to add shine more than anything and do it at home to save money.
Might have to experiment Grin

Fanola shampoo!

I’ve lightened my hair over the last 6 months to blend with my grey too. I initially used Fanola no orange shampoo when mostly brunette still and I’ve moved onto Fanola No yellow- literally does what it says on the tin.

Both stopped the brassiness between salon visits and is fairly cheap on amazon. It’s really good stuff
