Johnson’s Baby Shampoo Curly Girl Method?

Katie1945 · 16/02/2020 18:57

I want to start the Curly Girl method and know I need to do a clarifying wash first. I bought some Johnson’s Baby Shampoo because I had read on a blog that this is good for it. However, when I’ve done more research other people have said this is no good for clarifying/too gentle. It seems they changed the formula recently and the old one was good for this but the new one isn’t.

If anyone knows if this can be used for a clarifying wash, or knows another good product, I’d like to hear about it.

Thanks Smile

curly here. I would not go near that stuff.

I never used a clarifying shampoo. just started off with the normal shampoo and swapped to sulfate free later on..

Johnson's is the most drying stuff ever and not for curls (or any hair for that matter, least for babies).

Thanks hydeandrun, I think I’ll return that then. Will I get product build up if I don’t clarify?

I honestly thought you were talking about a government policy here until I saw where it was posted!

hydeandrun · 16/02/2020 19:44

Will I get product build up if I don’t clarify?

I found that buildup slowly cleared up by using normal shampoo and silicone free conditioners and curls creams. buildup usually is caused by conditioners with silicone. if you go silicone free, you won't get new buildup and old one will slowly clear.

I just bought the cheap shampoo in Aldi as my clarifying shampoo; it was about 50p. I do it about once every 3 or 4 weeks.

Use the Johnsons Baby Shampoo to clean your make up brushes Wink

ClientQueen · 16/02/2020 20:00

I've been CG for years and never clarify now. I do protein treatments and deep condition but the closest I get to shampoo is as I am co wash

Katie1945 · 16/02/2020 20:07

Thanks for all your replies guys! So I think what I’ll do is return the baby shampoo and use a shampoo that has Sulfates but no silicone to clarify once a month. Will this be alright or will that be bad for my curls? (So confusing, blogs and websites all say different things) I have wavy hair by the way. Smile

Oh, another thing, co wash conditioners are so expensive so I was hoping to use this very gentle shampoo....

.....and then use conditioner/deep conditioner before scrunching, air drying/plopping.

Will that be alright?

I would highly recommend getting your hands on some Cantu products, they are honestly amazing and last for absolutely ages - a little goes a long way.

As others said I would strong advise against baby shampoo, your hair will end up with that halo of frizz and potentially a bit sort of waxy feeling so the curls won't be as defined as they should be when doing the curly girl method.

Ah I'm excited for you, is so satisfying once you get the hang of it!

MummytoCSJH · 16/02/2020 20:29

I do CGM and didnt clarify before starting or regularly. You don't have to and it has never been a part of the official method. I use superdrug's own fruity conditioner to co-wash - 80p I think - and Garnier hair food (aloe because the others stink!) for a few quid to condition. Then either one to leave in and superdrug's own mousse in 4 or 5 to scrunch. It doesn't have to be expensive at all. It won't necessarily ruin your curls to clarify if you feel you need to, but you don't need to. The point is there is no product build up if you use the right products, so nothing to clarify out. There are lots of UK based help groups on Facebook that are good for questions like this.

happycamper11 · 16/02/2020 20:37

They've changed the formula now, if you look on the fb page they'll give products suitable in the UK. We've been doing it 4 years now so can't remember which are ok

happycamper11 · 16/02/2020 20:38

@hydeandrun the method op is talking about uses no shampoo at all. It's important to strip the hair before you start the routine

fallfallfall · 16/02/2020 20:46

Curly girl here. I use shampoo weekly, yes I need daily conditioner (co wash) which I buy in big bottles as that’s the product I go through the most. Personally it’s the curl lotion that makes the biggest difference, not the shampoo type or conditioner or the scrunch etc.

Katie1945 · 16/02/2020 20:53

Thanks MummytoCSJH, that’s a really helpful reply. Does anyone know if I’ll be alright using that gentle Holland and Barrett shampoo? I’ve checked on Curlsbot and it has no ingredients that I shouldn’t use, but I don’t think I’m supposed to use shampoo each wash am I? I’m supposed to use cleansing conditioner, but that’s expensive. I’m worried that a regular conditioner would make my hair too greasy/make my scalp irritated, etc.

Used any sulphate shampoo as a final wash.

I cowash with Superdrug cherry and almond conditioner. It's dead cheap and always almost on a deal. My leave in is Garnier Ultimate Blends Almond Crush, so not expensive either.

happycamper11 · 16/02/2020 20:56

Using shampoo is not the curly girl method... it's conditioner washing only. You can choose Lo poo shampoo method instead. I'm not sure if the new recipe baby shampoo is suitable for that. Curly crew group on fb can help you with that. Curly girl method won't allow posts on using shampoo except for final wash. That's harsh and not suitable to use except for a once off

happycamper11 · 16/02/2020 20:58

@FuckingHateRats the almond crush is the absolute favourite I've found. Use it on DD for washing and leave in now.

QueenieMum · 16/02/2020 21:02

It depends how strictly you want to follow the CG method. Strictly speaking you should only use CG approved conditioners to wash & condition your hair from now on, no need to clarify first. You may well get some additional greasiness and an itchy scalp whilst your hair and scalp become used to your new routine (transition period).

What I've learned through trial and error is that low poo (Faith in Nature for me) and a curl cleanser (Boucleme) work better for me in conjunction with CG conditioners. I use the curl cleanser most of the time and low poo every so often, depending on how my hair feels. It's worth persevering with but be prepared for lots of trial and error until you find what works for you. The method itself is as cheap or expensive as you want to make it, I would stick to one conditioner and one styling product fir the first few weeks and take it from there.

hydeandrun · 17/02/2020 07:43

I found that no shampoo at all does not work for me and I have pretty tight/dry curls. It just cloggs up the scalp and the roots.

I use shampoo but use a sulphate free one (plenty of them available in every supermarket) and it works fine. Without any shampoo at all, your hair will become dull and lank. You also will probably want to use deep conditioning hair masks etc and none of these work on "dirty" hair iyswim.

it's a bit trail and error to figure out what works for your hair. took me a few years to figure out. likewise with products. what works for one curly, doesn't work for another. Depend what curl type you have, high or low porosity etc. There are lots of curly bloggers on YouTube. might be worth finding one who has your kind of hair and get idea from there too. It's. rabbit hole though once you get into it Grin

I would use CG as a loose guide only.

PickAChew · 17/02/2020 07:49

Alberto balsam Shampoo is dead cheap and good for a reset wash and an occasional clarifying wash.

I don't Co wash and just use a lo-poo or else I end up with a disgusting scalp and over-moisturised, poofy hair.
