Has gel nail varnish got any better in recent years

I would love to have gel nails but, when I tried it a few years ago, it would often lift off an entire nail after 48 hours and within a few more days, half of them would have no gel left. It didn't flake off or anything and nor was I picking at it. The whole sheet of varnish would just lift off. Even thought that meant I only ever had it on for a few days, it would destroy my nails for months afterwards. They would just be so brittle.
You would have thought that, after all that, I'd want to stay away from them forever but, for the brief hours each time before it starting going wrong, I loved them.
Has anything changed which might mean they'd actually last 10 days or so? Would they destroy my nails again? Are there any alternatives?
Please help!

I've regularly had gel polish on my nails for the couple of years now - I've never had the gel lift off in the way others have described - I get them done every 3 to 4 weeks - I've got an appointment this afternoon actually. occasionally they might chip or the nail itself breaks if you are unlucky but generally they wear well until you change them/remove them. I had a bad experience with my nails being awful after going to a nail bar many years ago. But then I got quite friendly with the staff at a local beauty salon that offers nails alongside other treatments (I started going in originally for eyebrow threading) and talked about my concerns and they explained that mainly what damages your nails is the excessive use of electric drills/files to remove the polish and although it takes longer they soak off the polish (which is why nail bars tend not to bother because for them the profit is in a fast turn around) I took the plunge ahead of my wedding and haven't looked back since. My nails are definitely not damaged but I think alot of that may be actually bout having a good knowledgeable technician so would advice anyone tempted to go to a proper beauty salon rather that a nail bar

I went somewhere local and they filed it off with one of those drill files - totally weakened my nails. Also didn't last longer than a week.

Now I go somewhere highly recommended where they lightly file and then soak off. The difference in the condition of my nails is amazing. My nails are also longer and able to be filed in the same shape which has improved overall appearance. I only pay a fiver more but it's absolutely worth it. I get 2-3wks out of them.

OP, same thing happens to me. I don't think it is the product or application. I think it is our nails. I think some nails are more oily or porous so moisture gets under - something like that anyway. When it lifts, it literally lifts off. No nail damage at all.

I use The Gel Bottle for all my ladies and they get 4-5 weeks wear without a single chip. I use Biab base - two colour coats and finished with rubber top.

Its all about the prep too - so make sure they are removing all non living tissue off your nail plate - small light circular motions with a 180 grit file - and proper cuticle removal. Always cap the free edge - and top coat twice for real problem lifters/chippers.

Always follow maintenance - oil regulary - and wear gloves!

I have a hard gel base applied underneath my gels. I usually get 3 weeks out of them then, occasional lifting but I am very heavy on my nails.

Without anything on I have very weak and brittle nails.
