Party clothes for 8yo dress/skirt refuser

8yo DD2 would wear tracksuit bottoms and monster or Mickey Mouse t-shirts all the time given half a chance and while that’s generally fine by me, we do need to find her something a bit smarter for parties etc. She won’t countenance a skirt/dress/anything too glitzy. Taking her round the shops for a browse is ok but I can anticipate her lobbying for stuff she doesn’t need and losing interest pretty quickly so could anyone suggest a good starting point (or even better, links to specific outfits!) please??

My 9yo DD is not into skirts/glitz either- she likes River Island and Gap, but not sure how 'smart' you're thinking! She would wear a jumpsuit to look 'dressy', or she has just got some nice skinny jeans with stars on from M and S. She would wear a jumper dress and leggings but that might be too casual for what you're thinking.

How about velvet trousers and a nice simple top? Velvet is really comfy but looks luxurious and therefore special.

Ds and his 8 year old.friends generally wear Jeans or shirts to parties. The odd one wears trackies. Why cant she wear similar?

RitaTheBeater · 08/02/2020 13:12

My dd used to wear shorts with tights and boots or a playsuit/jumpsuit.

Would these be too much for her?

My daughter’s the same age and prefers skinny jeans or glitter leggings with a floral top - something like this.

My 6yo DS is similar.

I figure if you can't wear what you want to when you're six then when can you....and if we can't reach our children that it's what inside that matters and not the clothes they adorn their bodies with then where are we....

Mallowmarshmallow · 08/02/2020 13:17

Oh, and thinking about it I was similar as a child. Hated dresses and never wore them to parties...I still hate them now.

BlingLoving · 08/02/2020 13:23

Why not just Jean's and t shirt?

Ktay · 08/02/2020 13:25

Thanks everyone for the suggestions; I might get somewhere with a jumpsuit. We’ve just dug out the next set of hand-me-downs and she was quite taken with some dungaree shorts and harem trousers so might see what else I can find along those lines.

As noted above, the vast majority of her free time, she wears whatever she likes and if we’re getting new clothes is free to choose pretty much whatever she likes to wear, from any section of a shop (provided I don’t completely hate it). She could just do with having a slightly smarter option very occasionally.

My 12 year old is very much a hate dress/skirt girl.

She wore these two outfits at an anniversary party and my graduation.

Still looked very smart & she felt really comfortable on both occasions.

Mine loves jumpsuits, says they are super comfy.

This is the party outfit of choice for my 10 year DD who has similar tastes:

Lots of children just wear casual clothes to parties especially from 7/8.
I won’t bother trying to get her anything special unless you had a wedding to go to or something.

squishedgrapes · 08/02/2020 17:23

My daughter is 9 and refuses to wear party dresses. She wears sequinned tops, and has a pair of velvet jeans, a pair of gold coloured coated jeans, she likes this combination with Nike AF1s. Last party she went to she wore cargo trousers, Nike's and a Star Wars T-shirt with glittery sequins on. I think it's better that she feels happy in what she wears, her friends dress similarly. I think girls at this age grow out of childish party dresses. Until their teens.

Have a look in Zara - my dress-hater loves the long culottes and palazzo trousers in there which look good with a shirt or funky t-shirt. Zara also has some fun tops that are plain but have interesting collars or sleeves. Most importantly, the clothes are comfortable.

Ktay · 08/02/2020 22:18

Velvet was a good tip, looks like H&M and Boden have some options. Zara might be up her street too. Thanks again everyone for the suggestions
