Is there a 'right' way to wear a belt?

Stupid (light-hearted) debate in the household this morning & I'm turning to the Style board for the final decision.

Getting dressed this morning, my DD14 saw me put on my belt going clockwise around my body - so feeding the belt through the loop on the right hand side first.

Apparently this is completely wrong. Belts should only be worn anticlockwise, feeding through the left hand side first.

On thinking about it, I realised I actually change the way I wear a belt, and don't actually care, but my 14 year old daughter thinks this is an abomination of style!

So, how do you wear yours?

I didn't know there was a right or wrong way!

LizziesTwin · 08/02/2020 09:24

Belts with trousers go so the buckle goes over the button, with the fabric. Not sure if I’ve expressed that clearly.

Fabellini · 08/02/2020 09:29

I’ve never really thought about it - but I realise now that I always feed mine through to the left first..it just feels wrong somehow if I do it the other way.
Like LizziesTwin says, when you undo your trousers/jeans, the buckle of your belt should fall on the side where the button is.

borntobequiet · 08/02/2020 09:31

I go anti-clockwise from the left, like your daughter. But that’s because I’m right handed and find it easier to buckle it that way.
I wouldn’t take any style tips from a 14 yo.

Oooh, I like the logic on the buckle sitting on the side of the button, that makes sense!

Like you said @EggysMom - I didn't know that there was a right or wrong way!

But based on the small responses, I do feel slightly special that I can where a belt both ways!

Who knew it would create such a debate!

I always assumed it was like jackets - womens lap right over left and menseft over right.

dudsville · 08/02/2020 12:09

I'm just imagining how I do a belt and I loop it counterclockwise. I like that there's a reasonable sounding notion upthread as to why this is, but I wasn't aware of any rule.

WrinklesShminkles · 08/02/2020 13:10

I think it's just easier to push the belt through the loops with your dominant hand - so right handed people would go counterclockwise and left handed clockwise? I can't see what difference it would make having the buckle and button on the same side, especially when both are fastened.

MoltonSilver · 08/02/2020 13:48

In more traditional and tailored styles womens trousers overlap from the opposite side to mens. Women would therefore thread their belt through from the opposite side to mens.

Younger people have probably only ever worn jeans and very casual trousers, which all seem to tie from the left. It would make sense then that they put the belt through from the same side that the trousers tie.

CoffeeCoinneseur · 08/02/2020 14:58

I've never thought about it but now that I do, I always feed mine in through the left - so anti clockwise - too!

The other way would just feel wrong.

CountFosco · 08/02/2020 15:03

DH goes anticlockwise, I go clockwise. I'm LH, he's RH. But the comment about men and women's trousers makes sense as well.

NomDeQwerty · 08/02/2020 15:07

Will you ask your 14 year old what we should to with the dangly belt tail if there are no belt loops and no extra, moveable loop on the belt to tuck it into please?

Sits and waits patiently.Smile

AnythingConsidered · 09/02/2020 13:37

@NomDeQwerty she tells me a small hair band if you have any lying around or, if you have a few spare quid, you can buy belt loops on Amazon.

I asked her that question sarcastically and she genuinely had a solution. I don't know who she is anymore!!!

Yes, a hair band will do the trick. Your DD has gone up in my estimation.

NomDeQwerty · 09/02/2020 13:46

Loving that idea! How haven't I thought of that? Your DD is a Star

AnythingConsidered · 09/02/2020 17:18

@borntobequiet she's alright really. A classic teenager who know everything and nothing all at the same time!

She's strutting around all proud of herself now @NomDeQwerty :)
