Thick hair help

I have very thick, pretty straight just below shoulder hair which tends to frizz. Currently I wash it, spend about 25-30 mins drying it with a parlux hairdryer and then run out of time and patience so put it in a pony tail. I have 2 small children and a busy job so I don’t have hours to spend on my hair. I’m also useless at anything hair related so always look scruffy and unfinished and it upsets me.

Does anyone have any easy hairstyles that look smart in very thick hair? And any idea how to get a hairdresser not to just cut layers in (which just make it worse!). When I say easy I mean really really easy as I’m really really useless at it!

You could scrunch it and air dry it? I've read that having frizz could be a sign of curl and I think this is true, perhaps just leave it wavy?

DottyDetective · 30/01/2020 23:40

But that will take hours! I need something that is fairly quick for work days and looks smart when not left down.

I have very thick hair also. My hairdresser cuts into it and takes away the weight by using thinning scissors. She really goes for it. Maybe you could try that? Makes my hair much more manageable.

Lalala205 · 30/01/2020 23:56

I also have mega thick hair and have mine thinned. If you can find a stylist who'll use a razor vs thinning scissors though. The quality of the cut between the two is really different.

PickAChew · 31/01/2020 00:01

Curly girl really doesn't take hours. Wash, condition, really condition, scrunch in your chosen styling product, msybe diffuse a bit, leave to dry, scrunch out the crunch and enjoy.

PickAChew · 31/01/2020 00:05

Thinning makes my hair frizzier. Great when it was short short but beyond 2" ends at all different places were just a mess.

DottyDetective · 02/02/2020 01:36

Thanks PickAChew- it’s the waiting for hair to dry that takes ages?

I clip mine back in a large clip or a loose bun if I need to get out before it dries, but leave in conditioner, comb it through, a drop of Argan oil then clip it back for a few hours - let it got a run a comb or my fingers through it every so often.
Will only be d Se fraught if I spend time straightening it after it is fully dry - hairdryer doesn't seem enough but that's prob more about my skills than anything else.

GeraltOfRiviaIsMyCat · 02/02/2020 08:11

Condition-wash-condition (using sls and silicon free products) really helped mine.

It’s basically wet hair- comb conditioner through hair- lather up shampoo in hands- lather hair- rinse hair- comb conditioner through hair- wait a bit- rinse.

OverthinkingThis · 02/02/2020 13:38

If I want to avoid the frizz I wash my hair in the evening, tie it up in a half or full ponytail and let it dry naturally while I sleep. It looks way better than if I use a hairdryer on it. Agree with pp about silicone free conditioner ( I use tresemme perfectly undone)

TaleOfTheContinents · 02/02/2020 16:28

Lalala205 Is the hairdresser you use in/near London? I've really struggled to find one who'll use a razor. Razors give the best result for my thick hair, but most hairdressers won't use them any more.

MissCharleyP · 02/02/2020 19:06

An undercut made so much difference to mine (thick, uncontrollable and frizzy). I have it shorter now but honestly it was a game-changer not having as much hair on my head!

banivani · 02/02/2020 19:15

My hair is quite frizzy and I can guarantee there're no curls lurking in there. ;)

I have thick hair and a few years ago decided to get it cut regularly (as opposed to once a year and letting it grow out) so I'd avoid the ponytail thing. Having a "style" helps me wear it out instead of just pulling it back with an elastic band. Anyway, joining the choir on thinning it out when getting it cut. Makes a massive difference. I now have a sort of bob/lob thing and since it's less thick it doesn't drive me mad anymore.

ItFigures · 02/02/2020 19:19

I’ve got really thick hair, I do get it thinned out but it’s still very thick. My hair isn’t straight though it’s very wavy/curly. If I’m not straightening it I’ll wash it, add some product, Keratese very good and then I’ll tip my hair upside down and scrunch with a diffuser hair dryer. Sometimes my hair resembles a lions mane, other times it looks lovely.

I love curly hair, I think it’s pretty. Experiment OP and see how your hair reacts to it.

NotMeNoNo · 02/02/2020 19:22

Given up and got a pixie cut, it looks softer round my face than a pony tail and any kind of bob fluffs out into a big mushroom. I have to style it every day but it takes 5 minutes.

mnthrowaway202020 · 02/02/2020 19:25

Brazilian blow dry or keratin smoothing treatment

Whenasuitcasejustwontdo · 02/02/2020 19:30

Your hair sounds like mine. Having it thinned out means more frizz! I bought the revlon hot air brush which has worked wonders. It's much more manageable and somehow my amazing parlux is redundant.

Mesmeri · 02/02/2020 19:32

Another vote for an undercut! I have similar issues - a bob usually looks like an a-symmetrical bicycle helmet on me. But with an undercut at the sides, it's much quicker and easier to dry and it sits beautifully in a long bob, plus I can still tie it back without the shaved bits showing if I want to.

DottyDetective · 03/02/2020 12:34

Oh the Revlon brush sounds like something I should try! Thank you.

I’d love to try an undercut but do need to wear it up at work mostly so it’s probably not a runner.

My hair is also super thick and frizzes easily. I’ve got an above shoulder bob and an undercut at the back. It looks 100 times better with the undercut rather than layers or thinning it, now it’s just all one length.
I use John Frieda 3 day straight which makes it nice and sleek. And I always wash, dry and straighten at night rather than in the morning. I think it looks better after being slept on, and it also doesn’t go frizzy during the day.

MrsPerfect12 · 03/02/2020 15:02

I use wow smoother and it reduces my drying time and smooths great.
You could also get a kabelo hair treatment.

CoxwellHuge · 03/02/2020 15:17

I have long really thick hair. It used to take me about 50mins to and hour to blow-dry my hair. I have been having keratin treatments for about 3 years now, usually every 4-5 months and it's been a complete game-changer for me.

Now I can dry my hair from towel-dry in about 8-10mins, and straightening it only takes another 8-15mins depending on how fussy I want to be.

My hair always used to go really frizzy and massive if any slight moisture got on it, even just damp air but now I can get rained on and it doesn't frizz. If I kink it in a pony tail it falls back straight after about 20 mins.

It's not cheap, I was paying £120 a time but have since found someone else who charges £99 a time but does an even better job and I can't imagine ever not doing it now. I always wear my hair down and I love it. Previously I was like you and always had it in a pony-tail but I love my hair now. It really is worth doing but you have to follow all the instructions for the first three days after application.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 03/02/2020 15:18

@Mesmeri is there any chance you could post a pic of your undercut?! I can't fully visualise what you mean about having it undercut at the sides and still being able to tie it up and not see the undercut.

OP I am same as you, curly girl just wouldn't work for me because my hair is so unbelievably thick it would take all day to dry. I just couldn't turn up to work with wet/damp hair! Sometimes I think I'd love a month off life in general so I could give the CG method a real go but as it is I just don't have the time it needs to 'get used' to it.
I got an undercut and whilst it's made a small difference (I still have so much hair) I hate the way it looks Blush I am in two minds about keeping it. Would love to see other people's for comparison.

I tried the Revlon styler thing but I just couldn't manage it (I'm not great with hair unfortunately!) but you might have more luck.

DottyDetective · 04/02/2020 06:04

Life I think we are very similar! I am really bad at styling so I just want to be able to do something easy. Maybe I should try the Brazilian blow dry.
