Hiya,

basically Im getting married in Nov but money is really tight - and I have my wedding dress for the church, but were no longer having a wedding reception or party at a hotel - we are just going to my mums for a party afterwards.

Which is where the problem comes in - My dress is very wide - lots of tulle layers, which is fine when swooping around a big great room on the dancefloor. But as were just going to be at my mums im not going to 'fit' with all the guests there, I can see it getting in the way.

So has anyone got a fancy dress size 10/12, i could borrow PLEASE!

Moneys tight and I really dont think I can squeeze out money for a 2nd smaller dress!

thanks

Can you not take the first dress back and get a middle sized dress?

kitsandbits · 01/09/2007 10:19

But I love it It was bought in a sale of an ebay shop thats closed down, its brandnew, but I really do love it so would like to wear it at the church.

Just chance the real dress - you've paid enough to want your money's worth - or have a back up form your existing wardrobe if it is a problem. Have you sorted the other items yet, this seems trivial in comparison !

LoveMyGirls · 01/09/2007 10:27

What if you try and sell it for more than you brought it for then buy another dress you love just as much and possibly pay for a reception room?

eg.
say the dress was £200 sell for £400 then buy another dress for £250 and hire a room for £150 or something like that? (obviously you set a reserve and if it doesn't sell for much more then you dont sell it) I know you really like the dress (ive never been married so feel free to inore me btw) but it's a dress, wouldnt you rather wear one dress for the whole day than a dress you really love for the first hour of your wedding then get changed into something you might not even like for the rest of the day?

Is it possible to take one of the petticoats off after the ceremony? Then you could still wear the dress, but it won't be quite as wide.

kitsandbits · 01/09/2007 10:32

A receptions not really an option ans that leads to more people being invited which means more mouths to feed, which means more drinks to supply - plus a DJ, room decoration - flower arrangements

Just opens up a whole can of worms we cant afford to think about.

Suits ect are sorted - as MIL rang from Menorca and has arranged for a family member to give us the money she owes us - so the financial worry is pretty much gone, that said its not alot of money and still on a mega tight budget.

Ive had to get rid of alot of ideas, but really would like to keep my big dress, lol

I might have to just brave the big dress in smallish house - as havent gotanything in my wardrobe thats suitable. Not even a dress! lol

Hi Maureenlove, its all built in - no petticoat, just layers and layers of netting and stuff!

MaureenMLove · 01/09/2007 10:34

Damn! It was such a good idea too!

MamaG · 01/09/2007 10:38

kits, I would wear the dress, really I would. If people have to squeeze around you, then tough. You wlil be the bride, it's your day and you deserve to wear something that makes you feel wonderful.

Re reception, I note what you say about drinks, flower arrangements etc. Says who? You can hire a room reasonably cheaply, say a function room in a pub, don't bother with flowers, everybody buys their own drinks and there are LOTS of teenage lads around who have their own decks who would prob DJ for a tenner

We held DD's 7th birthday party in the function room of a "sports and social club" - cost £2 to join as a member and members get to use the room, privately, for free! They wer happy for us to provide our own food and if we had adults there, they just went down to the bar for their drinks.

Just a thought, I picked up from OP that you aren't exactly thrilled about having recep at your mum's house, but there are other options

Oh - and my cake was from M&S and was delicious

kitsandbits · 01/09/2007 10:43

Lol - no im relieved about my mums TBH - less stress and cost.

Im just worried about someone burning my dress or spilling something on it as i shuffle past!!

Weve been to 2 places to arrange a party and they just assume that as its a wedding we have thousands to spend and i feel like a prick having to keep saying 'havent got the money for that' - 'can we scale it down' ect

Im happy with going to my mums

pleeeeeeease where the dress ! it is beautiful and anything else you get, will always feel like second best . you won;t be doing this again, so wear the dream dress......i had a big wedding in a huge venue...and my dress still got knackered....they always do..once you have hugged and kissed everyone, eaten , drank, danced, had everyone step on the train accidentally, then it makes no difference where you are !

MamaG · 01/09/2007 10:46

oh well great then, I'm happy if you are

Thing is, are you EVER going to get the chance to wear it again? Probably not. So if somebody does spill on it, its not SO bad, it will come clean. People will, I'm sure be careful around you with cigarettes - you could ask people ot just smoke outside to be doubly sure.

I think if you don't wear it, you'll look back on teh day and regret it

MamaG · 01/09/2007 10:47

x posts lulu!

My dress was and still is filthy, but I wouldn't have taken it off for the world

MamaG · 01/09/2007 10:48

(not that a naked bride is ever a good look!)

You clearly love the dress, so wear it.

I think the suggestion of finding a function room somewhere is a good one, or what about a church hall or village hall?

How big is your mum's garden? We've put up a old frame tent in my sister's garden for my nephew's 18th and 21st, hung a few fairy lights and it's been great. We offered it to some friends in the same situation as you, but they decided to go for a marquee in the end as they didn't want people "in a tent". I have to say though, once everyone was in there, it really was no different to our tent.

I thought of you when I was listening to Radio 2 yesterday. They were talking about freebies and one suggestion was that if you're getting married go to a department store on the morning of the wedding and have a make-over, so you get your make up done for free.

Bouquetsofdynomite · 01/09/2007 12:05

Can you convince your mum or any friends that they NEEEEEED to buy themselves a patio heater and let you borrow it.
How about a fluffy white knitted shrug to help keep you warm in your dress?
If you do find the dress is driving you mad, you could always snip out a few layers from underneath (or hack it into a mini).
