How long do you try things on for (when trying on at home)?

I’ve had a few clothes recently that I liked when I initially tried them on, but then when I’ve actually worn them I realised they twist, ride up etc.

Anyway from having a chat to a couple of friends, seems they buy stuff, then “try it on” for the day or at least a good few hours (with tags on) at home before deciding. They don’t go out for the day or anything like that, just wear it at home.

It’s never occurred to me to do this, I’ve only ever tried stuff on for a few minutes. But I guess it would give you the opportunity to see if clothes have any nasty “quirks” like twisting, itching, riding up.

So what’s normal? How long do you try stuff on for?

I do the same as you op, try on a few times but don’t keep the item on for longer than looking in the mirror several times!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/01/2020 18:25

I only try it for a few minutes! Might try eg different tops with it or whatever, but not actually go about my day - what if I spilt something on it or the cat snagged it or I made it sweaty?

NoMilk · 29/01/2020 18:27

On/off in seconds.

Then again a few days later to decide 100% Hmm

For the day seems very inconsiderate to then send it back, not exactly hygienic either- being at home doesn't mean you are not sweating or wiping on or past surfaces etc. That isn't 'trying it on' its just wearing it.

I tend to try it on for about 15 mins max I suppose, to try it with a number of items and shoes in my existing wardrobe to see if it is something i will actually use in various outfits, and have shoes that go with it. Quick walk around the upstairs to see how it moves and that is all. I don't see how you can have something on and not immediately know from walking that it flows wrong/rides up/itches.

Would always have a look in a few different mirrors/lights or take a photo if it were something for a special occasion - but to be honest if i were going to that much effort i would just take it as that i wasn't THAT sure about it and so it's a no- ultimately if i am in the slightest doubt, i just return it- those things never do get worn because the doubt doesn't go away, and yet the item is still in your wardrobe!

few minutes too, would hate the thought of someone else wearing it for any longer, it's scuzzy

TheQueenBeyondTheWall · 29/01/2020 18:29

On see what it looks like.

Sit on the bed to see what it's like sitting down then straight off so about a minute.

I thought everyone did the same!

snotthatfurrry · 29/01/2020 20:03

Try it n. Front of the mirror. Get my iPad and video myself wearing it, send the video to various honest friends for opinions, bend down in it, move about etc etc, and try with different matching clothes nd accessories
I take a couple of days to decide whether to keep, but I wouldn't wear it all day

LaPampa · 29/01/2020 20:08

Very much like you describe. I’m still haunted by a white company dressing gown which got immediately clawed by a cat and I had to keep it- despite it not being right. Compounded by it then shrinking. It was a Christmas present too which makes it worse!

PattiPrice · 29/01/2020 22:19

On and off in five minutes. I take a photo when I try it on and if I'm any way unsure, I look at the photo and decide if it looks good or not on me. More often than not, I do not keep it after looking at the photo as I'm very self critical and dislike most photos of myself anyway!

grownup2 · 29/01/2020 22:28

Video is a great idea, especially if OH can take it so I see different angles. Will try that.

Lucked · 29/01/2020 22:36

I am very quick too. But yes to sitting down in it and trying different shoes.

coffeeforone · 29/01/2020 22:40

I might leave it on for 5 mins if I'm not sure, different angles and DHs opinion. If I'm sure I love it or hate it then it only takes less than a minute.

Sparklyring · 30/01/2020 10:59

Wearing all day is really taking the piss. Like others have said you still sweat being at home. I'd hate to buy something that someone has worn for so long as it's not new any more. Please show your friend this thread and tell her it's not acceptable.

CoffeeCoinneseur · 30/01/2020 12:37

I’ll try something on for 15-20 mins while I’m trying it with different tops/bottoms/shoes. I’ll sit down and check it’s not tight or strangling me or digging in anywhere.

I have however contacted stores when items have become baggy after wearing them for a couple of hours (M&S jeans) or haven’t washed well (Boden) and I once returned a pencil skirt to Dorothy Perkins that kept riding up. All returned and refunded with no problem.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 30/01/2020 12:43

I was actually planning a "long try on" this weekend for the first time.
I've bought some trousers where the 14 was just a tiny bit snug, so you could see the pocket line, and the 16 is very roomy. I know trousers sometimes loosen with an hour's wear, so I am planning to keep the tags in the size 16 that I bought, and wear for a hour. If they loosen up I'll swap for the 14.
