German wedding dress code?

Hello.

Are German weddings more casual than UK? DD1 is going to one in August and a friend thinks that they tend to be a lot less dressy than in the UK.

DD doesn't like to stand out from the crowd, so it would be good to avoid that if possible. The vast majority of guests will be German.

Thank you Smile

My friend is half German and attends family events in Germany. She says the older people are quite formal and sometimes wear very German clothes to formal events. Younger people are smart but she feels there is little difference between them and us. Take a couple of outfits? Casual wouldn’t be right from what my friend says.

less dressy - but still 'best'
definitely no hat/fascinator.

have a look at fashion retailer websites: www.zalando.de/hochzeitsgaeste-kleider/

it's more like what brits would wear to the office for a special occasion.
can your dd go a few days before and buy a dress there?

It might depend whereabouts in Germany it's taking place, OP. There's a big difference between Berlin and rural Bavaria for example.

Generally, I'd say the lesser side of formal. As above, a kind of smart casual. No towering stilettos.

But honestly, I wouldn't do this: can your dd go a few days before and buy a dress there?
The UK high street is generally much more interesting than the German one. She'd probably just end up in H&M or Esprit.

I’ve been to 2 German weddings, both in Stuttgart. I would say still dressy, but not overly weddingy like in the UK. No fascinators, no hats.

I live in Germany. There are regional variations, but assuming your daughter is under 60, her style would be a smart dress with a black or dark blazer/ office style jacket (suit) on top. No hats, no statement shoes. It's kind of dress down glam.

Have a good time!

The German wedding I went to required a ball dress for the evening and day outfit for the church but I think the invitation also made that clear.
